WPIAL Hall of Fame Class of 2012

Neil Walker is known for his baseball talent. The current Pirates second baseman had an unforgettable baseball career at Pine-Richland High School and was a first-round draft pick. But it is what Walker also did in other sports that helped earn him a spot in the WPIAL Hall of Fame. The WPIAL Hall of Fame class for 2012 was announced Thursday at a news conference, and Walker was one of the selections. Walker was in Los Angeles with the Pirates, but his father was at the news conference at the Heinz History Center in the Strip District. Walker had a terrific baseball career at Pine-Richland, starting four seasons and batting .504 for his career. He hit .657 as a senior with 13 home runs, 42 RBIs and a 1.403 slugging percentage for a WPIAL championship team.Scholastic Notebook – 04/08/2012

It is most certainly one of the oddest sports combinations you will see in the WPIAL. You’ll be scratching your head trying to figure out how many times you have seen a championships golfer who also is one of the best shot putters and discus throwers in the district. As odd as it sounds, Katerina Luttner is living out the combination at Fox Chapel High School. She won the WPIAL girls golf championship in 2010 and was the runner-up in 2011. She also has been a medalist at the PIAA level and has a golf scholarship to the University of Mississippi. But in the spring, she throws the discus and shot put for Fox Chapel. This spring, Luttner is the No. 1 discus thrower in the entire WPIAL with a mark of 111 feet, 8 inches. Sprinters Trenton Coles of Clairton and Iman Wilkerson of Penn Hills turned a double play at the PIAA track and field championships Saturday at Shippensburg University. Coles, a junior, and Wilkerson, a senior, were the only double winners from the WPIAL on the final day of the two-day meet at Shippensburg University. After a year as runner-up, Riverside is back on top of the WPIAL Class AA Boys Team Track & Field hill. The Panthers beat out Washington, South Fayette and Freedom Thursday afternoon at West Mifflin High School to win a fourth WPIAL championship in the last five years. Meanwhile, Hempfield edged North Allegheny, Mount Lebanon and Baldwin to win the Class AAA title.Butler and Freeport are Golden in 2011 WPIAL Girls Track & Field Team Championships
The Butler girls track and field team are the golden girls...again! The Golden Tornado captured back-to-back WPIAL Girls Class AAA Team Track and Field crown by beating Hempfield, Norwin and Butler Thursday afternoon at West Mifflin High School. India McCoy is bar hopping like few girls have in the history of the WPIAL. McCoy is only a sophomore at Ambridge, but she already has established herself as one of the best high jumpers in league history. The decision might come as a surprise to some because college interest was starting to pick up in Mason, who led the WPIAL in scoring last season at 33.3 points and scored 64 in one game. Come late May, dont be surprised if the Elizabeth Forward baseball players turn into Champs champs. The Elizabeth Forward baseball program continues to rise under seventh-year coach Frank Champ. It was in the mid 1970s and young Riverside High School baseball coach Dan Oliastro drafted a letter of resignation. There are 500 reasons why Riverside is glad Oliastro never handed in that letter to the school board. On Thursday, Oliastro won his 500th career game as Riversides coach when the Panthers defeated Beaver Falls, 4-0, in a WPIAL Class AA Section 5 game.
