Blackhawk Holds Off South Park In Girls AAA Championship

The Blackhawk Lady Cougars used torrid perimeter shooting early and clutch free throw shooting late to defeat South Park 62-55 to capture the WPIAL Class AAA Championship at the A.J. Palumbo Center. Halle Denman netted a game-high 21 points for the Lady Cougars, while her teammates Chassidy Omogrosso, a Duquesne recruit, and Bridgette Shaffer also scored in double figures, with 17 and 14, respectively. The Lady Eagles, the defending WPIAL and PIAA champions, were paced by Allison McGrath’s 19 points. Top-seeded Blackhawk (23-2), which never trailed in the contest, gained an early lead when Shaffer knocked down a three-pointer, the first of six shots the Lady Cougars hit from behind the arc in the first half.

Seton-LaSalle Boys Topple GCC For First Basketball Title in 25 Years
In a classic matchup that saw 16 lead changes, the Seton-LaSalle Rebels (25-1) won their second WPIAL championship and the first since 1989 with a 52-51 victory over the Greensburg Central Catholic Centurions (22-3) in the McDonald’s/WPIAL Class AA title game at the A.J. Palumbo Center.

Shorthanded Warriors Use Double OT To Win First WPIAL Title

It took a little longer than originally planned.?In fact it took a lot longer than anyone originally planned.?But when all was said and done, the Central Valley Warriors had the first WPIAL basketball championship in the school’s brief history after a 70-69 win in double overtime over perennial title contender Chartiers Valley. Tony Gates sealed the victory with a free throw with just .6 seconds left on the clock at the end of the second extra frame. After a desperation heave came up empty, Central Valley players erupted into a wild on-court celebration.

Lincoln Park Crushes Monessen in Boys Class A Championship Game
It was all Lincoln Park (25-1) after the first quarter as the Leopards claimed their second WPIAL championship in a short school history with a 85-41 victory over the Monessen Greyhounds (20-6) in the McDonald’s/WPIAL Class A Boys Championship Game at the A.J. Palumbo Center on Friday evening. Elijah Minnie had a triple double with 20 points, 16 rebounds and 12 blocked shots as the mercy rule took effect with 3:23 remaining in the fourth quarter.

Seton-LaSalle Golden Again With Dominant Win Over Burrell in Girls AA Championship
The Seton-LaSalle Rebels (22-4) rolled to their sixth WPIAL Girls basketball championship Friday afternoon at A.J. Palumbo Center, defeating the Burrell Bucs (25-1) by a score of 55-34. The Rebels opened the game with an 11-0 run and never looked back. Burrell had trouble with the Rebels pressure defense turning it over on their first four possessions and eight times in the first quarter. The Bucs turned it over 26 times on the night. The Rebels were able to convert many of those turnovers into fast break points.

WPIAL Basketball Playoffs – Friday 2/21 Recaps

While the top four seeds in Boys Class A have made it to the Final Four, and the top three seeds plus the fifth-seed are Semifinals bound in Boys AAA and Girls AA. PIAA Team Wrestling – First Round Recaps
February 7, 2014
The WPIAL could not have asked for a better day in Hershey in AAA on Thursday, with all three WPIAL qualifiers advancing to Friday's quarterfinals. Winning easy were Franklin Regional and Latrobe. WPIAL Champion Franklin Regional, led by seven falls, two technical falls, and two forfeits, blew by District 3 third place finisher Wilson 67-9. They will wrestle District 10 Champion Erie McDowell on Friday at 2:00 PM. WPIAL Runner-Up Latrobe meanwhile cruised to a 60-6 win over District 4 Champion Jersey Shore. Latrobe won 13 of the 14 bouts wrestled, picking up 4 falls, a technical fall, and two forfeits. They will wrestle District 1 Champion Boyertown on Friday at 2:00 PM.

The 2014 PIHL All-Star Games will take place on February 9, 2014 at Robert Morris University’s Island Sports Center in Pittsburgh, PA. Faceoff times are 11 a.m. (Open Class), 1 p.m. (Class A), 3 p.m. (Class AA) and 5 p.m. (Class AAA). Harborcreek leads the Open Class with six representatives, Quaker Valley leads Class A with eight, Latrobe leads Class AA with eight representatives, while Butler, North Allegheny, Penn-Trafford and Bethel Park are all sending six players, the most in Class AAA. Central Catholic Has Bid For Perfection Come Up Short in PIAA AAAA Championship

The St. Joseph’s Prep Hawks (12-3) made it two for two for the Philadelphia Catholic League, using a dominating second half to push the Pittsburgh Central Catholic Vikings (15-1) from the ranks of the unbeaten with a 35-10 victory Sunday night at Hersheypark Stadium. The Vikings led 10-7 at the half, but lost starting quarterback and Florida State recruit JJ Cosentino to a left ankle injury in the third quarter. Senior quarterback Chris Martin led the Hawks back from the halftime deficit, throwing for 192 yards and three touchdowns against a Central Catholic defense that had only surrendered 85 points and pitched seven shutouts coming into the championship tilt.

District College Football Recap for Saturday, November 23

Eyes turn to the hardwood as the district college football season came to an end on a windy and snowy Saturday afternoon. Slippery Rock fell in the D-II playoffs, while W & J saw their season come to an end in the Northeast Ohio snow belt. Waynesburg lost in the ECAC Northeast Bowl, while Duquense and Saint Francis posted wins in their respective regular season finales. The district also says goodbye to a coaching great, Joe Walton coached his final game at Robert Morris, ending a 20 yard career in Moon Township.

West Allegheny Remains Perfect in WPIAL Championship Title Games

It is official. West Allegheny just doesn’t lose when it plays for a WPIAL championship. The Indians (13-0) made it seven for seven with a 16-6 victory over Central Valley (11-2) to clinch the Class AAA title on a wintry autumn evening at Heinz Field. In the process, West Allegheny coach Bob Palko became the first WPIAL grid boss to win seven outright WPIAL crowns. The other Indians titles came in 1997, 1999-2001, 2009 and 2012. West Allegheny won the game with its usual method of success. That would involve controlling the ball and taking large chunks of time off the clock on long, methodical drives. The Indians controlled the ball for 29:12, while Central Valley had the ball for just 18:48.

District College Football Preview for Saturday, November 23

The regular season is over for the D-II and D-III teams with SRU and W & J qualifying for post-season play. Waynesburg was also honored by the ECAC with a trip to the Northeast Bowl. The NEC finishes up the regular season with two games, including a battle of local teams in Loretto. Here are previews of ALL the games, including two that will be heard right here on the Network: NCAA DIVISION II PLAYOFFS/SUPER REGION ONE Slippery Rock (9-2) at Winston Salem State (9-1)   1pm on WLER 97.7-FM and msasports.net The winner plays number one seed Shepherd (10-0), who receives a bye. Bloomsburg received the number two seed and the other bye. West Chester also qualified, they host American International.

WPIAL Plays of the Week – Week Twelve 2013

Before we reach the final destination on the Highway to Heinz, we had one final stop to make. And boy, was it fun. In Class A and AAAA, we will definitely have new Champions, as North Allegheny lost in the Quarterfinals and the WPIAL's biggest powerhouse of all-time, Clairton, fell late in the Semifinals. In AA and AAA, South Fayette and Central Valley will look to dethrone Aliquippa and West Allegheny on Saturday. Don't forget, we will have EXCLUSIVE audio broadcasts of Saturday's Championships. WPIAL Football Semifinals Recaps 2013

For the eight teams that were winners on Friday night in the WPIAL Semifinals, they keep alive the dream of winning a district and state football championship. Some of those dreams will be fulfilled on Saturday, November 23rd at Heinz Field, while others will be devastated by coming so close to reaching that golden goal, but having to settle for silver. But at least the four runners-up next week will have had the chance to play at Heinz Field and come away with some silver lining in a dark title game cloud. But it is those eight teams that lost on Final Four Friday that have to deal with the deepest wounds of a successful season washed away one win from the Big House on the North Shore.

Playoff berths are on the line this weekend for three Western Pennsylvania college football teams. In the PSAC, Slippery Rock can move onto the D-II playoffs with a win in the PSAC State Title Game.
