The WPIAL could not have asked for a better day in Hershey in AAA on Thursday, with all three WPIAL qualifiers advancing to Friday’s quarterfinals.

Winning easy were Franklin Regional and Latrobe. WPIAL Champion Franklin Regional, led by seven falls, two technical falls, and two forfeits, blew by District 3 third place finisher Wilson 67-9. They will wrestle District 10 Champion Erie McDowell on Friday at 2:00 PM.

WPIAL Runner-Up Latrobe meanwhile cruised to a 60-6 win over District 4 Champion Jersey Shore. Latrobe won 13 of the 14 bouts wrestled, picking up 4 falls, a technical fall, and two forfeits. They will wrestle District 1 Champion Boyertown on Friday at 2:00 PM.

For WPIAL 3rd place finisher North Allegheny, who faced off against District 3 Champion Cumberland Valley, it wasn’t so easy to advance. The match started at 220 pounds, where Zach Smith bumped up from 195 pounds to pick up a fall for the Tigers. Cumberland Valley would respond, picking up a fall and decision to take a 9-6 lead. But North Allegheny would answer right back, winning four straight matches including one by technical fall to take a 20-9 lead. Cumberland Valley then came battling back by picking up five straight wins, four of which by major decision, to take a 28-20 lead with two matches to go.

North Allegheny would need the Byerly’s, Colton and Clay, to win while picking up bonus points to advance. Colton Byerly would do just that for his team at 182 pounds, winning by fall in 3:29 over Brendon Rigney to make the score 28-26 Cumberland Valley in front. That meant the final match of the night at 195 pounds between Clay Byerly and Brad Drabenstadt would decide the winner. In a tight match, it was Byerly who won the match for North Allegheny, winning the bout 4-2 to help the Tigers advance to the quarterfinals. North Allegheny will wrestle District 11 Runner-Up Parkland on Friday at 2:00 PM.

The three WPIAL Class AA representatives have not fared well during the early rounds of the 2014 PIAA team wrestling championships. Eight-time WPIAL champion Burrell (12-4) and this year’s runner-up, South Fayette (20-2), both dropped first round matches at the GIANT Center in Hershey on Thursday afternoon, while third place finisher Jefferson-Morgan (15-4) was eliminated from the tournament on Tuesday evening at District 10 runner-up Fort LeBeouf, 41-19, in a preliminary round match.

Burrell fell behind early, 17-0, after losing the first four bouts in its match with District 3 runner-up Hamburg (19-3). The Bucs came roaring back, however,  to win the next four weight classes and take a 21-17 lead. Pins by Corey Falleroni (145 pounds), Steve Edwards (152), and Derrick Beattie (160) and a 3-1 decision victory by Nick Pattock helped Burrell build the four point lead with six bouts remaining in the match. Hamburg again jumped out on top, 32-21, with victories in the next three bouts. Derrick Beattie’s win by fall at 285 pounds cut the Hawks lead to 32-27 before Romeo Eaddy’s 13-9 decision over Burrell’s Dean Edwards at 106 pounds sealed the win for Hamburg. The Hawks then forfeited to Burrell’s Dillan Jeffery at 113 pounds to make the final margin of victory 35-33 in favor of Hamburg. Burrell will next face District 2 champion Western Wayne at 8:00am Friday morning in a first round consolation match.

South Fayette was hammered, 43-15, by District 6 champion Huntingdon (18-1) as the Lions could only muster wins in four of the dual meet’s 14 bouts. South Fayette got decision victories from Mike Carr (132), Grant Fetchet (160), and J.J. Walker (170) and a pin by 106-pounder Andrew John. The Lions will also wrestle in a first round consolation match Friday at 8:00am against District 11 runner-up Saucon Valley.

NOTE: In a quest to win its fourth straight Class AA team gold medal, Bethlehem Catholic (13-0), the District 11 champion, annihilated District 1 champ Lower Moreland, 73-0, to advance to the quarterfinals.
