The orange cones were taken away, the ribbon was cut and the curtain was raised on the Highway to Heinz...the 2010 WPIAL Football Playoffs on Friday night. When it comes to WPIAL Girls Field Hockey Playoffs, 2010 turned out to be the Year of the Tigers. Both the North Allegheny Tigers in Class AAA and the Ellis School Tigers in Class AA captured district gold Monday night with victories at Fox Chapel High School. The WPIAL held six games on Tuesday night to set up the Super Soccer Saturday finals for the boys. The many surprises that have occurred in the girls tournaments didn't cross over to this gender as most of the top boys seeds are headed to the finals. North Allegheny defeated Fox Chapel 2-1 in overtime to win the AAA field hockey championship Monday night at Fox Chapel High School. The title is the 11th district crown in 14 years, but first for the Tigers since 2007. The Ellis School Tigers captured their fourth WPIAL championship in the past nine years by defeating Greensburg Central Catholic 6-1 Monday night at Fox Chapel High School. Now with 16 teams left in each classification, we here at MSA Sports will do what the WPIAL football steering committee will do on Monday, we will seed the teams.
