It has become a tradition like no other...at least during the holidays here at MSA Sports. It's time to look back at another high school sports year with the top stories from around the WPIAL in 2013. We continue our countdown with the five stories that ended up #20 through #16. #20 - Virgin Playoff Teams There are teams that haven't played in the WPIAL football playoffs in 'X' amount of years, then there are schools that have never played in a WPIAL football game...ever. Until this 2013 season that is. Summit Academy is a small court-adjudicated facility in rural Butler County that started in 1998. It was a pretty big deal this fall when Sto-Rox’s Lenny Williams became the WPIAL all-time leading passer. But it’s looking like Williams’ record might not last more than a year. South Fayette’s Brett Brumbaugh appears to have a very good shot at Williams’ record next year. Let’s look at the numbers and the possibilities: Williams, a senior, finished his career with 8,508 yards. Besides that being the best in WPIAL history, it also was fifth-best in state history. Sto-Rox lost lost last week in the WPIAL Class A finals and the loss means Williams can’t add more distance between himself and Brumbaugh.2013 PIAA GIRLS VOLLEYBALL PLAYOFF RESULTS

While the WPIAL had zero presence at Central York High School Saturday in the girls volleyball state championships, District 10 had two teams from the western half of the state qualify for the finals. However both are coming home with silver as Fort LeBoeuf fell in five games to Delone Catholic in AA while Cochranton got swept in three games by Marian Catholic in the Single-A finals. There are 10,000 reasons to like Lenny Williams at quarterback. Williams is a senior at Sto-Rox and it has been well-documented that he is the all-time leading passer in WPIAL history in yards and touchdowns. But what has been lost in the passing numbers and records is the fact that Williams now has over 10,000 yards offense.No other WPIAL player is known to have 10,000 yards offense in a career.Williams has 7,799 yards passing and his rushing yardage puts him over 10,000. The top seeds advanced all the way to the finals where two of the three were able to reach the high expectations the district steering committee set for them. The Tigers claimed girls volleyball gold for the fourth time, the Yellowjackets for the third time and the close but no cigar Crusaders captured their school first ever volleyball title. All three top seeds made it to the WPIAL girls volleyball championship finals Saturday at Chartiers Valley High School while a pair of #2-seeds were joined by a #7-seed in the title match thrills. While Bishop Canevin needed five games to knock out the defending champion Greensburg Central Catholic in Class A, Freeport and North Allegheny needed only the minimum three games to add to their golden collection. Last 7 years the Lady Jackets section record has been 90-2. In 2013, Freeport finished 11-1 and as co-champs with Knoch in Class AA Section 4. They are the #2-seed in the Class AA playoffs.This years Lady Jackets are anchored by it's 5 senior players. In Hometown Volleyball action the Avonworth Antelopes defeat the Quaker Valley Quakers 3-2 in a back and forth match. Game scores were 25-12, 25-22, 14-25, 24-26, and 16-14.It was a non conference match up, and both teams had clinched playoff berths. QV in AA, and Avonworth in single A. This match was a tune up for the playoffs. The Quakers were on a one game losing streak while the Antelopes had lost three straight, two of them section games.The first game was all Avonworth as the girls were firing on all cylinders. The Lopes never trailed and took a close 14-10 game to 23-10 with great serving by Abby Oberdick and Ericka Thomas. In Hometown Volleyball action between the Blackhawk Cougars and the Beaver Bobcats at Blackhawk high school, Beaver wins the match 3-1. Game scores were, 25-18, 19-25, 25-22, 25-14.Both teams came into this pivotal section 1 AA match tied with identical 7-1 records and tied for first place with section rival Hopewell. All three teams have clinched a playoff berth, but we're tied as Beaver had a win over Blackhawk, and Hopewell over Beaver, and Blackhawk over Hopewell. This match tonite went a long way to determine the section champion and playoff position.The Cougars play Hopewell next week, while Beaver will take on the Vikings this Thursday night.Hometown Volleyball Match Recap: CHARTIERS-HOUSTON BUCCANEERS 3- Avella Eagles 0
The Chartiers-Houston Buccaneers (3-7 in section play) hosted the Avella Eagles (2-8) in a late season section matchup on a cool Tuesday night in October. The Bucs came out with a solid 3-0 victory to add another win to their section resume.The first game stayed close the entire time with each team trading barbs back and forth for a quite a while. At one point in the game, both teams were tied 11-11. This proved to be an important part in this game and each one after. All 3 games saw this 11-11 similarity and that was the point where the Bucs took over. Sophomore right side hitter and co-captain Kylee Levers led the way with a team high 6 kills in game one. The South Side Rams had little trouble with the Beaver County Christian Eagles Monday night in Hookstown coming away with a solid, if not inspiring 3-1 on their home floor, in a non-section match.The Rams rolled in game one behind the setting of senior Samantha Gibson and the kills of Cheyenne Seik and sophomore Toni Yacoviello rattling off nine straight at one point to build the lead to 20-8 before finishing 25-18.The Eagles responded in game two with a pretty convincing 25-12 win behind some great play from Emily Havrankek, Mia Padgett, and Dalashay Whitehead, never allowing South Side to string together more than two points in a row in the game.

Now in their second year in Class AAA, the West Allegheny Indians look forward to competing for a playoff spot in this 2013 season.The Indians returned 4 starters, led by all WPIAL junior setter Tara Savisky. "Tara is in my opinion the best setter in the WPIAL and a fantastic competitor", said head coach Brian Begor.Also leading the charge Is senior Alexi Hamm who has worked very hard to develop into a quality player. Also playing key roles are seniors Jenna Reilly, Lizzie Murn, and juniors Rachel Buck and Nicole Ostrander. Sophomore Alyssa Placha continues to improve every day in the libero position and sisters Sam and Lauren Schaupp have provided some good play in serving and defensive roles.
