The Gateway girls soccer team scored a 2-0 shutout victory over Penn Hills on Sept. 27 to improve to 3-5-1 overall and 3-5 in Section 3-3A.

Becca Ryan and Hayden Price scored for the Gators, who are in fifth place in Section 3 behind Plum (8-0), Latrobe (6-1), Franklin Regional (5-2) and Penn-Trafford (4-4).

The Gators have games this week against Franklin Regional and Penn-Trafford, and will finish off the section slate at Hampton (Oct. 9), at Greensburg Salem (Oct. 11) and against Latrobe (Oct. 16).

Football team off to 2-0 start in Big East

The Gateway football team improved to 2-0 in the Big East Conference on Sept. 22 at Plum after three nonconference setbacks to start the season.

Brad Birch threw for 358 yards and two touchdowns, Jaquon Reynolds added three short TD runs and Steve Jenkins and Kenny Lewis each surpassed 100 yards receiving as Gateway raced past the Mustangs, 49-14, at Mustangs Stadium.

“We had that nice, natural break from the first couple of games to now getting into the conference,” Gateway coach Don Holl said.

“At the end of the day, if you win your conference, you’re in the playoffs. Not that we wanted to lose any of those early games, and credit to the teams (Mt. Lebanon, Woodland Hills, North Hills) that beat us, but we felt that we could play better with the guys we had out there and the guys we had coming back. There’s still a long way to go, but I like the trajectory.”

Gateway led 28-7 at the break and added a pair of scores in the second half to put the mercy rule running clock into affect.

Boys soccer ties Penn-Trafford

Gateway’s boys soccer team played to a scoreless tie with Penn-Trafford on Sept. 26, earning a third straight shutout.

The Gators had a four-game unbeaten streak, including wins over Latrobe (3-2), Obama Academy (1-0) and Penn Hills (4-0).

After games with McKeesport and Franklin Regional, Gateway (5-3-2, 5-2-2) will wrap up Section 4-3A play against Plum (Oct. 5), at Latrobe (Oct. 10) and against Obama Academy (Oct. 12).

Tennis players compete at section doubles

Gateway sent a pair of tandems to the Section 1-3A doubles tournament Sept. 27.

Salma Muhktar and Srilihari Sapram lost to Hempfield’s Olivia Eisaman and Madalyn Twichell, 10-6, and Iris Xia and Abiha Syed lost to Connellsville’s Jayden Groh and Maddie Orndorff, 10-8.
