High school roundup: Bethel Park jumps out early in win over North Hills

Ryan Meis hit five 3-pointers and scored 17 points in Bethel Park’s 30-point first quarter to lead the boys basketball team to a 88-73 win over North Hills in nonsection play. Meis finished with six 3-pointers and 26 points overall, and teammate Alex Mullen scored a game-high 28 points. Tommy DiRienzo added 19 points for Bethel Park (8-3), which led 55-31 at halftime. Jordan Albright paced North Hills (4-6) with 25 points, and Jake Stuckert added 16 points.

Connellsville 68, Laurel Highlands 49 — Josh Maher scored 24 points ,and Jalen Rogers added 21 points to lead Connellsville (5-6) over Laurel Highlands (1-9) in nonsection play. Demetryus King and Tyvaughn Long scored 11 and 10 points, respectively, to pace Laurel Highlands.

Canon-McMillan 65, Washington 47 — Ethan Beachy and Tom Samosky scored 13 points each as Canon-McMillan (7-4) beat Washington (4-5) at the Chuckie Mahoney Classic in Burgettstown. Tayshawn Levy scored 11 points in the loss.

Trinity 57, McGuffey 34 — At the Chuckie Mahoney Classic, Michael Koroly scored 18 points as Trinity (5-5) beat McGuffey (8-4). C.J. Cole scored 12 points in the loss.

West Allegheny 71, Keystone Oaks 49 — Jackson Faulk scored 23 points, and Scott Bilovus added 14 points as West Allegheny (4-7) defeated Keystone Oaks (5-5) in nonsection play. Frank Stumpo scored 20 points to pace Keystone Oaks.

Aliquippa 80, Hopewell 39 — In nonsection play, M.J. Devonshire scored 23 points as Aliquippa (7-3) won its fourth consecutive game by defeating Hopewell (4-7).

Cornell 68, Chartiers-Houston 55 — Kaden Divito recorded a triple-double with 10 points, 10 rebounds and 10 assists to lead Cornell (9-2) to a win over Chartiers-Houston (6-6) in the Chuckie Mahoney Classic. Zaier Harrison led Cornell with 16 points, and Isaiah Langston and Jeavontae King-Walden each scored 12 points. Anthony Tomassetti scored 16 points for Chartiers-Houston.

Knoch 70, Deer Lakes 62 — The Knights had four players score in double figures, including Scott Fraser’s game-high 28 points as Knoch rolled past nonseciton rival Deer Lakes. Adam Bajuzik scored 14 points for Knoch (8-3), and Jake Scheidt and Julian Sanks chipped in with 10 apiece. Brad Perrottee led Deer Lakes (6-4) with 24 points, and Jared Colton finished with 11.

Girls basketball

Connellsville 71, Laurel Highlands 54 — Baileigh Bishop’s 20 points led four Connellsville players in double-digits during the Falcons’ nonsection win against Laurel Highlands. Heather Ansell and Sara Aumer each scored 14 points for Connellsville (4-6), and teammate Zoe Youndell added 12 points. Taylor Smith scored a game-high 27 points for Laurel Highlands (3-6), including hitting seven 3-pointers.

OLSH 56, Washington 41 — Ashley Norling scored 25 points to lead OLSH (7-3) over Washington (9-1) at the Chuckie Mahoney Classic in Burgettstown. Maddie Hoff added 12 points for OLSH, and Randi Thomas led Washington.

South Side Beaver 51, McGuffey 43 — At the Chuckie Mahoney Classic, Sydney Payne scored 17 points and Lex Konopko added 13 points as South Side Beaver (8-3) beat McGuffey (4-7). Cassie Darrall had 14 points in the loss.

North Catholic 54, Keystone Oaks 46 — Dani Short recorded a double-double with 14 points and 10 rebounds to lead North Catholic (8-1) to a win over Keystone Oaks (7-5) in the Don Graham Classic at North Catholic. Short earned MVP honors, and Kylee Lewandowski led North Catholic with 18 points. Gillian Piccolino led all scorers with 23 points for Keystone Oaks.

Wrestling

Ed Driscoll MAC tournament — West Allegheny beat Hopewell by one point to capture the team title at Freedom. West Allegheny finished with 167 points, Hopewell had 166 points and Moon finished with 160 points to round out the top three. Jordan Watters (126), Ty Mcgeary (160) and Dante Flati (170) captured titles for West Allegheny.

Watters defeated Carlynton’s Eddie Huehn by a 9-0 major decision, and Flati defeated Moon’s Jamal Littlejohn by a 13-3 major decision. Mcgeary earned the 160-pound title after defeating Mars’ Jake Richardson by a 4-3 decision.

Tri-County Athletic Directors Association tournament — Canon-McMillan beat Waynesburg to capture the team title at Trinity. Canon-McMillan finished with 247.5 points as Waynesburg (206) and Trinity (157) were next. Jacob Houpt (106), Jimmy Baxter (113), Kenny Hayman (126) and Gerrit Nijenhuis (182) captured titles for Canon-McMillan.

Nijenhuis defeated Peters Township’s Brandon Mattheews by a 13-3 major decision. Houpt pinned Ringgold’s Tairen Bundy at 3:20, and Baxter pinned McGuffey’s Nate Yagle at 1:42. Hayman won the title at 126 after a 3-1 decision over McGuffey’s Jett Pattison.
