High school roundup for April 4, 2019: Bethel Park tops Upper St. Clair on walk-off

Lauren Caye had the game-winning RBI as part of a four-run bottom of the seventh inning as Bethel Park defeated Upper St. Clair, 8-7, in a Section 1-6A softball game Thursday afternoon.

Gianna Sciullo had three hits for the Black Hawks (5-0, 5-0).

Peters Township 13, Mt. Lebanon 9 — Alex Bondi had a double, home run and seven RBIs as Peters Township (4-4, 2-2) won in Section 1-6A.

Albert Gallatin 14, Armstrong 0 (5 inn.) — Maddie Flowers had three hits, including a double, home run and three RBIs as No. 5 Albert Gallatin (2-3, 2-2) won in Section 1-5A. Annalie Paoli was 3 for 3, and Delaney Girvin hit a two-run home run for the Colonials.

Hampton 8, Gateway 2 — In Section 2-5A, Caitlin McCarthy was 2 for 3 with an RBI as Hampton (5-0, 4-0) earned a victory. The Talbots scored five runs in the bottom of the sixth to seal the win.

Trinity 10, Ringgold 0 (5 inn.) — Emma Morgan tossed a one-hitter and also doubled in a pair of runs to lead No. 4 Trinity (5-1, 2-0) to a Section 3-5A win.

Elizabeth Forward 5, West Mifflin 2 — Jordan Pinneri was 4 for 4 with two RBIs, and Taylor Ludwick knocked in two runs as Elizabeth Forward (3-3, 2-0) won in Section 2-4A.

Central Valley 6, Quaker Valley 5 — Marissa Crea was 2 for 4 with three RBIs to help Central Valley (1-3, 1-1) win in Section 3-4A.

South Allegheny 15, Brownsville 1 (5 inn.) — Olivia Stetz had three hits, including a home run and four RBIs, to guide No. 2 South Allegheny (9-0, 3-0) to a Section 3-3A win. Cortney Woytovich allowed one hit and struck out four in the victory.

West Greene 15, Serra Catholic 4 — Madison Lampe had four RBIs, and McKenna Lampe had four hits and an RBI as Class A No. 1 West Greene (4-3) won a nonsection game.

Hempfield 4, Pine-Richland 0 — Callie Sowers threw a one-hitter with eight strikeouts to help No. 4 Hempfield (3-2, 3-1) win a Section 2-6A game. Emma Hoffner doubled and had two RBIs in the win.

North Allegheny 7, Norwin 3 — Regan Brodine had two hits and four RBIs as No. 3 North Allegheny (4-0, 3-0) won a Section 2-6A game. Bailee Bertaini had two hits and two RBIs for Norwin (3-2, 2-2).

Penn-Trafford 9, Laurel Highlands 1 — Brooke Cleland was 2 for 3 with a home run and four RBIs, and Emma Little went 4 for 5 with two doubles and an RBI as No. 3 Penn-Trafford (4-0, 4-0) picked up a Section 1-5A win. Emma Armstrong doubled and homered for the Warriors.

Mt. Pleasant 10, Greensburg Salem 0 — Mary Smithnosky threw a two-hitter with six strikeouts and also was 3 for 5 with an RBI to help No. 1 Mt. Pleasant (4-0, 2-0) to a Section 1-4A. Sydni Overly had three RBIs, and Lexis Shawley was 3 for 4 with a home run and two RBIs. Nikki Mellinger and Chloe Perkins had hits from Greensburg Salem (2-2, 1-1).

Yough 13, Indiana 5 — Winning pitcher Kierra Waywood was 3 for 5 with two doubles and four RBIs to guide No. 2 Yough (4-2, 2-0) to a Section 1-4A win. Sammie McGhee had three hits and an RBI, and Hannah Christner was 2 for 4 with two RBIs.

Belle Vernon 7, McKeesport 4 — Ashley Joll had two doubles, and Natalie French had two RBIs to help Belle Vernon (2-5, 2-2) win a Section 2-4A game.

Greensburg Central Catholic 18, Geibel 1 (4 inn.) — Riana Booher was 3 for 4 with two doubles and three RBIs, and winning pitcher Jaden Cox was 3 for 3 with a triple and two RBIs to lead Greensburg Central Catholic (2-3, 2-1) to a Section 3-A win. Bella Skatell added two RBIs.

Apollo-Ridge 8, Northgate 4 — Mollie Charlton struck out 16 batters, homered and drove in three runs to propel the Vikings to a victory over Section 2-2A opponent Northgate.

Amber Earnest singled three times for the Vikings (3-1, 3-1), and Addy Baustert and Morgan Shupe added two hits apiece.

Meadow Conley and Maddy Abramowicz tripled for Northgate (1-3, 0-2).

Highlands 4, Uniontown 2 — Jaycee Haidze’s fifth-inning double drove in Maera Williams with the go-ahead run, and Kylie Zourelias added another RBI double in the three-run inning as the Golden Rams beat Uniontown (0-2, 0-2) in Section 1-4A. Haidze pitched a six-hitter for Highlands (2-2, 1-1), striking out 10. Zourelias doubled twice, and Bailey Beacom had three hits.

Freeport 13, Valley 3 (5 inn.) — Tori Radvan homered twice and drove in five runs to lead Freeport (3-0, 2-0) to a Section 1-3A win at Valley (0-4, 0-2). Emily Schmidt added a three-run homer for the Yellowjackets, and Autumn Powell doubled. Powell also picked up the win, striking out five over five innings. Mackenzie Booker singled twice for Valley.

Burrell 11, East Allegheny 0 (5 inn.) — Caroline Dynka pitched five innings with seven strikeouts, and Lea Coffman had a solo home run for Burrell (2-2, 1-1) in a Section 1-3A win over East Allegheny (0-3, 0-2). Rikki Wyble, Maia Ferra and Elizabeth Clark had two hits apiece. Wyble doubled and drove in two runs, Ferra tripled and had an RBI and Clark doubled.

Springdale 15, Jeannette 1 (5 inn.) — The No. 5 Dynamos (4-0, 2-0) scored nine runs in the first inning and rolled to a Section 3-A victory over the Jayhawks (1-2, 1-2). Natalie Woitas homered and drove in four runs, and Brianna Thompson added three doubles and four RBIs. Emily Wilhem doubled and knocked in two runs, and Alexis Hrivnak tripled and struck out 13.

Leechburg 23, Ellis School 0 (3 inn.) —Emma Ritchie had three hits, drove in four runs and pitched three innings with four strikeouts for Class A No. 4 Leechburg (4-0, 3-0), which cruised to a Section 3 win at Ellis School (0-2, 0-2). Aubrey Skeel had a three-run homer for the Blue Devils, who scored 11 runs in the first inning. Kristen Knapp added three hits and two RBIs.

Butler 6, Fox Chapel 1 — Neena Pietropaolo had two hits, including a double, but Fox Chapel (0-4, 0-4) was nipped by Butler (1-3, 1-3) in Section 2-6A. Claire Katz singled for the Foxes.

Baseball

Yough 9, Knoch 3 — Yough jumped on No. 2 Knoch in the first inning and rolled to a Section 1-4A win.

Second baseman Cody Ulander scored three of Yough’s first five runs. He also had two hits, including a double. The Cougars (4-2, 2-0) staked winning pitcher Jarett Bach to a 4-0 lead after two innings.

“We had a good approach against their pitcher,” Yough coach Craig Spisak said. “We hit the ball well.”

Knoch (4-1, 1-1) was able to get Bach’s pitch count up and he was replaced by Sean Royer in the fifth inning with one out and the bases loaded. Royer got out of the jam, and Knoch never threatened.

“Knoch’s hitters did a great job getting deep into counts,” Spisak said. “Jarett had to work.”

Bach struck out 10 and walked two.

Knoch scored three times off the lefty in the third inning, but Yough scored four runs in the fourth inning to extend its lead to 8-3.

Mt. Pleasant 9, Derry 5 — Joe Shrum doubled in three runs as part of an eight-run outburst in the top of the seventh inning as Mt. Pleasant (3-1, 2-0) won a Section 1-4A game. Jared Wagner had two hits, and Jared Yester had a two-run double for the Vikings. Josh Ulery had two doubles and four RBIs for Derry (1-3, 0-2).

Greensburg Salem 17, Highlands 0 (4 inn.) — Winning pitcher Matt Wicker knocked in four runs, and Aaren Putt had three hits and three RBIs as No. 1 Greensburg Salem (5-0, 1-0) cruised to a Section 1-4A win.

Bethel Park 10, Hempfield 2 — Bethel Park (4-1) won its third straight game, topping Hempfield (4-3) for a nonsection win.

Penn-Trafford 8, Kiski Area 6 — Bobby Lane hit a two-run, go-ahead homer in the top of the sixth inning, and Anthony Sherwin followed with a solo shot of his own to propel the Warriors (6-0) to a nonsection win. Penn-Trafford scored five times in the sixth to overcome a two-run deficit.

West Allegheny 6, Albert Gallatin 1 — Luke Lambert had two RBIs, and Austin Hendrick and Logan Scheider each had two hits as No. 3 West Allegheny (5-1, 2-0) won in Section 3-5A.

Beaver 7, Central Valley 3 — Harrison Pontoli had a double and two RBIs, and Brady Hansen doubled twice as Beaver (2-3, 1-0) won in Section 2-4A.

Leechburg 14, Riverview 4 — Leechburg (1-3) pounded out seven extra-base hits on its way to a nonsection victory. Dalton Hamm had three hits, including a double, and John Sorisio doubled twice. Jacob Pochiba, Caleb Steele and Caleb Curfman had one double apiece. Ben Blacksmith singled twice and tripled for the Raiders (1-2).

Deer Lakes 11, East Allegheny 0 (5 inn.) —Trey Darrah, Greg Geis, Josh Probst and Andrew Bokulich had one double each for Deer Lakes (2-2, 2-0) in a Section 1-3A victory over East Allegheny (0-2, 0-2). Bokulich had two hits and two RBIs, and Probst and Geis drove in a run apiece. Justin Brannagan pitched four innings and had four strikeouts to earn the win.
