High school roundup for Dec. 19, 2018: Southmoreland wrestlers edge Mt. Pleasant

Brett Huffman’s pinfall victory at 195 pounds was the only contested bout Southmoreland won Wednesday night.

It turned out to be just enough, as the Scotties defeated Mt. Pleasant, 42-39, in a Class AA, Section 3B match.

Mt. Pleasant forfeited six weight classes, giving 36 points to the Scotties (1-1, 1-1).

Luke Geibig (106 pounds), Noah Gnibus (126), Kyle Jones (160) and Dayton Pitzer (182) had pins for Mt. Pleasant (3-4, 1-1).

Derry 45, Elizabeth Forward 36 — Nick Reeping (132 pounds), Brayden Mickinac (195) and Dom DeLuca (220) notched pins as No. 3 Derry (5-2, 2-0) won in Class AA, Section 3B. The Trojans also won three bouts by forfeit.

Yough 42, Frazier 27 — Dustin Shoaf (195) and George Tusing (220) scored pins as Yough (3-5, 1-1) won in Class AA, Section 3B.

Franklin Regional 54, Plum 27 — In Class AAA, Section 1A, Finn Solomon (113 pounds), Garrett Thompson (120), Colton Camacho (132) and Mason Spears (138) all had pins, as No. 6 Franklin Regional (2-0, 2-0) was victorious.

Greensburg Salem 66, Gateway 18 — Cody Kaufman (20), Mason Jobe (126), Luke Willett (138), Dajauhn Hertzog (152), Ian Ewing (160), Sage Parsley (170), Jon Meyers (195), Trent Patrick (220) and Billy McChesney (285) had pins as No. 7 Greensburg Salem (2-0, 2-0) rolled to a Class AAA, Section 1A win.

Norwin 69, Central Catholic 6 — Luke Passarelli (113 pounds), Kurtis Phipps (126), John Altieri (138), Chase Kranitz (145), Frankie Gill (152), Bryce Long (170) and Ryan Weinzen (220) all earned pins as No. 9 Norwin (5-2, 1-1) won a Class AAA, Section 1A match.

Connellsville 48, Belle Vernon 24 — Casper Hinklie had a pin at 160 pounds to lead Connellsville (6-1, 2-0) to a Class AAA, Section 2A win. Logan Seliga (126), Cole Weightman (182) and Scott Joll (195) had pins for Belle Vernon (0-2, 0-2), which forfeited six bouts.

Canon-McMillan 59, West Allegheny 19 — Jimmy Baxter (120 pounds), Ken Hayman (132), Remington Ross (138), Tanner Rohaley (145), Evan Miller (195) and Alec Hendal (220) all had pins as No. 2 Canon-McMillan (2-0, 2-0) won in Class AAA, Section 4A.

Burrell 81, Riverview 0 — Cole Clark started things off with a pinfall victory at 160 pounds, and the Burrell wrestling team rolled to a Class AA, Section 3A win.

The Bucs (2-1, 2-0) added pins from Trent Valovchik (120), Bryan Gaul (132), Noah Linderman (152), Austin Mele (170), and Jason Templar (285); got a decision from Simon Slahtovsky at 145; and added seven forfeit wins.

The Raiders fell to 0-2 in the section.

Fox Chapel 42, Shaler 33 — The Foxes won a Class AAA, Section 3B match behind pins from Jordana Matamoros (106), Josh Miller (152) and Sean Mahon (182). Fox Chapel (3-4, 1-1) also got forfeit victories from Ray Worsen (113), Alex Wecht (160), Zane Gavazzi (170) and Henry Gavazzi.

Boys basketball

Hopewell 61, Freedom 46 — Joshua Miklos scored 21 points as Hopewell (3-3) won a nonsection game.

Pine-Richland 87, Brashear 66 – Dan Petcash had 30 points to guide Class 6A No. 4 Pine-Richland (4-2) to a nonsection win.

Thomas Jefferson 52, Steel Valley 50 — Shane Stump and Isaac McNeil each had 12 points as Thomas Jefferson (3-3) won in nonsection play. Connor Vehec scored 21 points for Steel Valley (2-5).

Belle Vernon 68, Laurel Highlands 58 — Cameron Nusser had 20 points and eight assists, and Larry Callaway added 20 points as Belle Vernon (1-5) won a nonsection game. Mitch Pohlot added 16 rebounds in the win.

Apollo-Ridge 45, St. Joseph 42 — The Vikings (2-5) held the Spartans (5-2) without a shot on the final possession of the game to secure a nonsection victory. Apollo-Ridge led 20-12 after the first quarter, but St. Joseph rallied to close the gap to two heading into the final quarter. Jake Fello led the Vikings with 16 points, and Klay Fitzroy added 11. Matt Arvay scored a game-high 20 points for St. Joseph (5-2).

Springdale 64, Ellwood City 38 — Mike Zolnierczyk led three Dynamos players in double figures with a season-best 27 points in a nonsection win. Springdale (4-2) led by 10 at halftime and expanded the advantage to 20 by the end of the third quarter. Ben Myford added 14 points for the Dynamos, and Demitri Fritch scored 12.

Winchester Thurston 59, Leechburg 42 — The WPIAL 2A No. 5 Bears (5-1) broke open a tie game at the end of the third quarter and scored a nonsection win over the Blue Devils (4-2). Dusan Krivokapic scored 22 points to lead the Winchester Thurston offense, and Jake Rabner added 16. John Miskinis had 19 points, and Dylan Cook added 11 for Leechburg.

Girls basketball

Hempfield 68, Gateway 54 — Sarah Liberatore had 25 points, and Jessica Persin added 14 as Hempfield (3-3) won a nonsection game.

South Fayette 54, Brentwood 49 — Clare Relihan had 18 points and Skylar Aitken added 16 as South Fayette (5-1) won a nonsection game.

Plum 53, Westinghouse 38 — Kennedie Montue scored 18 points as Plum cruised to a nonsection win. Alex Seigh chipped in 16 points for the Mustangs (2-4).
