High school roundup for Feb. 7, 2024: Kaitlyn Nease breaks Burgettstown scoring record

Kaitlyn Nease set a school single-game scoring record with 45 points to lead Burgettstown to a 71-26 victory over Sto-Rox in Section 2-2A girls basketball Wednesday night.

Nease broke the mark of 42 set by Jamie O’Donnell in 1988. Carlee Pennington added 10 for the Blue Devils (11-9, 7-1). Arianna Johnston led Sto-Rox (4-16, 0-8) with eight points.

Bentworth 62, Mapletown 41 – Amber Sallee sank five 3-pointers as part of a 23-point night for Bentworth (5-17) in a nonsection win. Ava Massucci added 16 points and Aubrie Logan scored 11 for the Bearcats. Isabella Garnek had a game-high 26 points for Mapletown (6-13).

Hundred (WV) 40, Jefferson-Morgan 36 – Leah Dean had 21 points for Hundred in a nonsection win. Kayla Larkin scored 17 for Jefferson-Morgan (3-18).

Propel Montour 26, Neighborhood Academy 21 – Brooklyn Skyes had nine points and Propel Montour topped Neighborhood Academy in nonsection play.

Serra Catholic 65, Bishop Canevin 40 – Bri Battles netted 18 points and Caitlyn Cooley scored 11 to propel Serra Catholic (17-4) to a nonsection win. Isabella Sysak paced Bishop Canevin (6-12), scoring 14.

St. Joseph 64, Jeannette 25 – Julie Spinelli led the way with 23 points and Gia Richter scored 13 for St. Joseph (18-2, 7-0) in a Section 3-A win. Navarah Smith scored 11 for Jeannette (7-8, 2-4).

Union 58, Dubois Central Catholic 23 – Kelly Clever produced a double-double with 22 points and 10 rebounds for Union (15-5) in a nonsection win. Kylie Fruehstorfer had 14 points for the Scotties.

Uniontown 53, Carmichaels 32 – Arika Dade had 22 points to pace Uniontown (7-14) in a nonsection win over Carmichaels (4-17). Lyric McLee added 13 points for the Red Raiders and Geelece Ingram scored 12.

Boys basketball

Albert Gallatin 76, Ligonier Valley 61 – Shymere Wilson scored 22 points and Mekhi Belt added 20 to lead Albert Gallatin (9-10) to a nonsection win. Tyrone Burton had 12 and Blake White chipped in 11 for the Colonials. Parker Hollick scored 29 points for Ligonier Valley (5-15), hitting five 3-pointers to set a school record with 56 for the season. Matthew Marinchak held the record with 54. Michael Wisniewski and Michael Vargulish-Graver added 11 each for the Rams.

Aquinas Academy 68, Redeemer Lutheran 35 – Joshua Schlemmer (19), Grayson Mizuk (16) and Jacob Guillen (14) scored in double figures for Aquinas Academy (13-7) in a nonsection win. Jesse Vanwyk scored 23 for Redeemer Lutheran.

Bentworth 73, Mapletown 57 – Christopher Harper led a trio of Bearcats in double figures with a game-high 25 points in a nonsection win. Ryan Moessner added 16 and Burt Lucas scored 13 for Bentworth (4-16). Josh Mick (16), Braden McIntire (15) and Roger Gradek (12) scored in double figures for Mapletown (2-16).

Bishop Canevin 87, Serra Catholic 78 – Drew Allen finished with 24 points and Jason Cross scored 23 for Bishop Canevin (11-9) in a nonsection win. Maddix Jackson had 17 for the Crusaders. Pete Burke led Serra Catholic (14-7) with 26, Owen Dumbroski had 20 and Isiah Petty scored 18.

Brashear 68, Perry 58 – Titus Gillett scored 29 points and Garett White followed with 15 to lead Brashear (8-10, 5-4) to a City League win. Javon Diamond led all scorers with 30 points and Jordan Roldan chipped in 11 for Perry (2-15, 1-7).

Carrick 64, Hopewell 62 – Brayden Fisher poured in 22 points and Ray Saunders added 19 to help Carrick (9-12) squeak past Hopewell (7-14) in a nonsection game. Zach Kovell led the Vikings with 19 points.

Environmental Charter 45, Propel Montour 42 – Caleb Dalton scored 16 points to push Environmental Charter past Propel Montour in nonsection action. Ty’Aire Hawkins had a game-high 19 points for Propel Montour.

McDowell 59, Pine-Richland 51 – Kamden Kramer had 27 points and hit five 3-pointers for McDowell in a nonsection win. Zach Kenny finished with 15 points for Pine-Richland (7-13) and Andrew Mendelovich had 14.

South Side 68, Nazareth Prep 64 (OT) – Andrew Corfield had 24 points and Brody Almashy added 23 as South Side (7-12) outlasted Nazareth Prep (6-12) in overtime to secure a nonsection win. Khylil Johnson netted 16 for the Saints and Will Evans scored 16.

Wrestling

Blackhawk 51, New Castle 15 – Ethan McCutcheon had a pin at heavyweight and Camden Morgan (139) earned a decision to help Blackhawk (9-9) win a nonsection match. Kaleb Wheeler (121) won in overtime and Kortel Marshall (133) had a pin for New Castle.

Brashear 42, South Park 30 – Jamal Younger (133), Ashish Darji (139), Elijah Elser (160) and Vincent Lenger (215) won by fall to lead Brashear to a nonsection victory. Carson Blackburn (121), Travis Kirk (127), Joshua Kuzcma (145) and Wyatt Markovich (172) had pins for South Park (4-11).

Ellwood City 45, Beaver 24 – The Wolverines (6-6) got pins from Gavin McClure (127), Maurice Smith (133) and Chris Quintanilla (172) and an overtime win from Logan Shriver (114) to win a nonsection match. Trenton Reagan (139), Nick Thompson (160) and Colton Robinson (285) recorded pins and Aaron Miller (189) won by injury default for Beaver (4-11).

Knoch 45, West Shamokin 27 – Cam Elliott, Owen Layhew, Wyatt Foster, Parker Anderson and Braylee Ireland won by fall and Brayden McGowan won by decision as Knoch (10-7) won a nonsection match to record 10 dual meet victories in a season for the first time in school history.

Mt. Lebanon 33, West Allegheny 32 – Ben Mares (160) and Cooper Wolling (172) recorded pins in the last two contested bouts to lead Mt. Lebanon (3-6) to a nonsection win. Jonathan Emma (107) won a decision for the Blue Devils. West Allegheny (9-3) got pins from AJ Snatchko (127) and Logan Slovick (133), a tech fall from Nick Jones (152) and decisions from Cam Danna (285), Blake Scheppis (139) and Chase Schepis (145).

Plum 37, Upper St. Clair 27 – Owen Campbell (121) and Rylen Campbell (127) won by tech fall and Carson Yocca (133) recorded a pin in the first three contested bouts to lead Plum (8-5) to a nonsection win. Antonino Walker (152), Charlie Campbell (160) and Jack Tongel (172) also had pins and Daniel Macioce (215) won by decision for the Mustangs. Upper St. Clair (9-10) got pins from Derek Worstell (139) and Hassan Badaruddin (189) and a decision from Michael Albert (285).

Seneca Valley 37, Hempfield 32 – Zachary Hill (133) earned a major decision and Ahmad Ahmadi (139) won a decision to secure a nonsection win for Seneca Valley (9-6). James Bidoli (145), Thomas Wuycheck (215) and Connor Smith (121) won by fall for the Raiders. Eli Carr (152), Pierce Turner (160) and Nicholas Marquis (172) had pins for Hempfield (3-10). Nathan Caracciolo (114) won by tech fall and Jacob Halsted picked up a decision.
