High school roundup for Jan. 10, 2024: Baldwin wrestlers knock off No. 3 Canon-McMillan

Andrew Sharp recorded a pin at 189 pounds to give Baldwin the lead for good in a 40-29 upset victory over No. 3 Canon-McMillan in Section 6-3A wrestling Wednesday night.

Collier Hartman (121) and Andrew Binni (127) secured pins and Vincent Binni (133) won by tech fall as Canon-McMillan (3-1, 2-1) took a 17-0 lead after three bouts.

Ramil Islamov (139), Mike Griffiths (145) and Keith Mincin (160) won by fall before Sharp’s pin gave Baldwin (2-1, 2-1) a 24-23 advantage.

Tyler Carter (215) won by fall and Ayden Miller (114) by major decision for the Highlanders. Geno Calgaro (285) had a pin and Mikhail Krenzelak (152) and Brayden Collins (172) earned decisions for the Big Macs.

Allderdice 66, Westinghouse 12 – Marcus Wahila (189) recorded a pin to lead Allderdice. Elias Bradbury (152) and Donavan Mitchell (172) had pins for Westinghouse.

Ambridge 30, South Side 24 – Ethan Wrotny (160) recorded a pin to help Ambridge (3-9, 2-3) to a Section 4-2A win. Ryder Goe (145) had a pin, Slayton Williams (189) won by decision and RJ Cusato (139) won in overtime for South Side (0-3, 0-3).

Ambridge 30, Blackhawk 28 – Ambridge (3-9, 2-3) got pins from Matthias Davis (139), Ethan Wrotny (160) and Dylan Wrony (189) in a Section 4-2A win. Brecken Vandecoevering (121) and Maddox Javens (285) had pins and Gavin Ronacher (145) won by decision for Blackhawk (6-7, 1-2).

Avonworth 48, South Allegheny 12 – Austin Kosanovic (121), Dimitri Velisaris (145), Bryce Metz (160), Jackson Krul (172) and Justin Beck (215) recorded pins and Angelo Valeriano (152) and Tyler Hanny (285) won in overtime for Avonworth (5-4, 3-1) in a Section 3-2A win. Mason Naspinski (133) and Dylan Mains (139) won by fall for South Allegheny (6-4, 2-3).

Belle Vernon 60, Ligonier Valley 6 – Colby Hibner (133), Gio Weightman (139), Dom Skibicki (152) Elijah Brown (172), Austin Hoffman (189) and Luke Bryer (215) won by fall as Belle Vernon (2-2) beat Ligonier Valley (1-14) in a nonsection match.

Bethel Park 56, Mt. Lebanon 9 – Pierce Reinhart (114), Colton Fisher (121), Diyor Islomov (127), Aiden Bench (133) and Ethan Higgins (145) had pins and Mason Kernan (139) won by tech fall as Bethel Park (7-1, 3-0) won six straight bouts from 114 to 145 in a Section 6-3A match. Hunter Goelz (172), AJ Tomaino (189) and Landon Hartman (215) won by fall and Maksim Miller (160) by decision for the Black Hawks. Jonathan Emma (107), Cole Gibbons (152) and Benjamin Lloyd (285) won by decision for Mt. Lebanon (1-4, 0-3).

Burrell 69, Riverview 0 – Jacob Stewart (139), Cooper Hornack (145), Nico Zanella (160), Patrick Nee (172) and Luke Boylan (215) won by fall as Burrell blanked Riverview in Section 6-2A. Ben Catullo (B) picked up a decision for the Bucs, who won six matches by forfeit.

Derry 53, Hempfield 18 – Jeremiah Gess (139) won by fall and Mason Horwat (145) won by tech fall in the first two bouts of the night and Derry (8-3) never looked back in a nonsection win at Seton Hill. Richard Daniels (160), Nathan Barkley (172) and Brady Brown (215) also had pins, Anthony Mucci (114) and Brett Klim (127) won by decision and Giovanni Beatrice (133) by injury default for the Trojans. Eli Carr (152) and Ty King (121) recorded pins for Hempfield (2-6).

Ellwood City 36, North Catholic 24 – Gavin McClure (139) and Gabe Paredes (285) recorded pins in under a minute and Logan Shriver (114) and Gabe Lilly (145) also had pins as Ellwood City (5-4, 2-2) beat North Catholic (4-6, 0-4) in Section 5-2A. Derek Allen (121) and Colton Gullo (152) won decisions for the Wolverines.

Fox Chapel 50, Armstrong 20 – Landon Funk (114), Daniel Noel (127), Alexander Kaufmann (152), Milo Chiu (160) and Joseph Geller (189) picked up pins to lead Fox Chapel (10-1, 3-0) to a Section 1-3A win. Michael Worsen (121) won by tech fall, Joshua Alexander (145) in overtime and D’Angelo Hamilton (285) by injury default for the Foxes. Armstrong (5-4, 1-1) got pins from Kaleb Kinzey (172) and Taye Bradshaw (215), a tech fall from Max Formaini (139) and a decision from Kyler Craig (107).

Frazier 51, Elizabeth Forward 18 – Frazier (7-3, 3-1) got pins from Tanner Hayes (121), Conner Reams (285), Austin Wilson (172) and Chase Celaschi (127) and a decision from Ryan Celaschi (160) to win a Section 2-2A match. Lucas Boyer (139) had a pin for Elizabeth Forward (0-4, 0-4).

Indiana 57, Greensburg Salem 18 – Nico Fanella (121) and Carter Putt (127) had pins and Jacob Snyder (139) earned a decision as part of a six-bout winning streak to start the match for Indiana en route to a Section 6-2A win. Will Turner (160) and Dominic Fanella (172) also won by fall for the Little Indians. Keegan Young (145) and David Peters (215) had pins for Greensburg Salem.

Jefferson-Morgan 63, Washington 6 – Johnny Gilbert (145), Brenton Barnhart (152) and Brock Bayles (189) recorded pins and Mason Sisler (285) won in overtime for Jefferson-Morgan (9-3, 3-2) in a Section 1-2A win. Caleb Patton (139) had a pin for Washington (0-5, 0-5).

Kiski Area 43, Central Catholic 21 – Travis Shearer (152), Riley Shearer (160), Ryder Ekas (285), Dominic Roland (114), Tyler Bollinger (139) and Ezra Keitzer (145) recorded pins, Evan Artman (172) won a major decision and Cooper Roscocky (189) won a decision for Kiski Area (6-8, 2-2) in a Section 1-3A victory. The Scotties got pins from Shawn Hollis (152), Landon Delara (160), Ethan Kenney (172), Nick Lubecki (114), Micah McGeary (121), Landyn Queer (127) and Kashton Bish (139) and a major decision from Jake Govern (285). Bishop Canevin 82, Farrell 68 – Jason Cross finished with a game-high 30 points and Michale Vaughn followed with 22 points to lead Bishop Canevin (5-5) to a nonsection win. Drew Allen added 13 points for the Crusaders. Julius Phillips put up 26 points for Farrell.

Burrell 66, Keystone Oaks 54 – Macky Bennis scored 21 points, Tucker Bitar added 17 and Joey Discello and Esau King-Buchak each had 13 to lift Burrell (8-4) past Keystone Oaks (4-8) in nonsection. Ethan Spivak led all scorers with 24 points for the Golden Eagles.

Butler 63, North Allegheny 60 – Braylon Littlejohn posted a career-high 38 points and eclipsed 1,000 points for his career as Butler (10-1, 3-0) clipped North Allegheny (5-8, 2-1) in Section 1-6A. Donovan Carney added 11 for the Golden Tornado. Joey Dopirak scored 29 and Ty Iwanonkiw added 14 for the Tigers.

Deer Lakes 71, Apollo-Ridge 26 – Billy Schaeffer drained eight 3-pointers and finished with 26 points to lead Deer Lakes (9-2, 4-0) to a Section 3-3A win. Collin Rodgers scored 15 points and J.T. McCue had 12 points on four 3-pointers for the Lancers. Karter Schrock had eight points to lead Apollo Ridge (1-13, 0-5).

Mapletown 70, Geibel 66 – Roger Gradek had 17 points and Lucas Stevenson scored 13 to lift Mapletown (2-8, 1-2) to a Section 2-A victory. Gary Tarbuk had a game-high 23 points for Geibel (0-12, 0-3).

Northgate 63, Hopewell 50 – Josh Williams scored 22 points, Tylan Daniels followed with 14 and Landon Lockett added 11 as Northgate (8-3) beat Hopewell (6-7) in nonsection play. Mason Showrank put up 18 points and Zach Kovell had 12 for the Vikings.

South Fayette 60, Mars 58 – Gino Satira hit the game-winning basket at the buzzer to lead South Fayette (6-6, 2-1) over Mars (7-5, 2-1) in Section 4-5A. Gavin Orosz scored 19 points and Michael Plasko followed with 17 points for the Lions. Ryan Ceh put up 15 points while Remi Black and Drew Navetta scored 11 points apiece for the Fightin’ Planets.

Girls basketball

Eden Christian 55, Monessen 28 – Hope Haring had 26 points to lead Eden Christian (7-6) to a nonsection win. Hailey Johnson scored nine for Monessen (5-2).

Laurel 35, Shenango 29 – Shyan Tindall scored 17 points and sank five 3-pointers for Laurel (3-10) in a nonsection win. Jael Henderson scored 10 for the Spartans. Ella Farrell had 14 points for Shenango (3-8).

Oakland Catholic 63, Greensburg Central Catholic 51 – Mia LeDonne led all scorers with 25 points, London Creach followed with 15 and Raygen Hintemeyer had 12 for Trib HSSN Class 5A No. 1 Oakland Catholic (13-0) in nonsection play. Avery Davis scored 15 points and Erica Gribble finished with 14 for Class 2A No. 1 Greensburg Central Catholic (7-4).
