High school roundup for Jan. 27, 2024: Greensburg Central Catholic knocks off Gateway

Tyree Turner scored 13 of his game-high 26 points in the fourth quarter as Class 2A No. 2 Greensburg Central Catholic knocked off Class 5A No. 2 Gateway, 63-42, at the Shootout at Seton Hill on Saturday.

Franco Alvarez added 19 points for GCC (17-2), which outscored the Gators in the third quarter, 19-5. Gateway (12-4) did not have a player score in double figures. Alex Lowry, Alec Dunsmore and Taili Thompson each scored nine.

Aliquippa 47, Penn Hills 43 – Cameron Lindsey had 12 points and Jayace Williams scored 10 to help Aliquippa (12-4) slip by Penn Hills (10-6) in the PBC Hall of Fame Classic at North Hills. Robert Thomas had a game-high 20 points for the Indians.

Baldwin 65, Uniontown 55 – Nate Richards had 25 points to guide Baldwin (13-4) to a win at the PBC Hall of Fame Classic at North Hills. Nate Wesling added 12 points and Caden Cherico scored 10 for the Highlanders. K’Adrian McLee scored 18 for Uniontown (15-2).

Beaver Falls 47, Jeannette 45 Da’Talian Beauford made a driving layup to beat the buzzer as Beaver Falls (6-10) clipped Jeannette (11-5) in the Shootout at Seton Hill. Braylon Pitts had 13 points and Marshall Clerici added 10 for the Tigers. Kymone Brown led Jeannette with 22 points, making 8 of 11 free throws in the fourth quarter.

Central Valley 61, Seton LaSalle 56 – Isaiah Jeter poured in a game-high 22 points to lead Central Valley (11-6) to victory at the PBC Hall of Fame Classic at Ambridge. Jude Coombs added 13 points for the Warriors. Patrick Weldon led Seton LaSalle (13-4) with 15 points and Hayden Merchant and Ian March scored 12 apiece.

Cheswick Christian Academy 44, Harvest Baptist 36 – Grant Rochkind had a double-double with 21 points and a dozen rebounds to pace Cheswick Christian Academy in a Southwest Christian Athletic Conference victory. Sean Louis scored 13 for the Chargers. Austin Holcomb had 13 for Harvest Baptist.

Eden Christian 70, Coventry Christian 42 – Luke Gronbeck sank six 3-pointers and scored 28 points to propel Eden Christian (8-8) to a nonsection win. Grayson Reichart added 14 points and Nathan Garrett added 10 for the Warriors, who yielded only 18 points over the final three quarters after trailing 24-15 at the end of the first quarter.

McDowell 65, Allderdice 51 Tyler Grove scored 24 points and Kamden Kramer added 20 as McDowell beat Allderdice (12-3) in nonsection play. Logan Golle led Allderdice with 11 points while Trey Schachter scored 10. Without Major Rainey, who’s averaged over 16 points per game this season, Allderdice had its seven-game winning streak snapped.

Northgate 70, Bishop Canevin 53 – Josh Williams scored 22 points to lead four players in double figures for Northgate (13-3) at the PBC Hall of Fame Classic at Ambridge. Ty Daniels added 11 and Kaden Kemp and Rob McKinley each had 10. Michael Vaughn scored 20 and Drew Allen finished with 18 for Bishop Canevin (8-8).

North Hills 68, Belle Vernon 67 Logan Johnson hit his fifth 3-pointer of the game with 10 seconds left to give host North Hills (9-7) the win over Belle Vernon (9-5) at the PBC Hall of Fame Classic. Johnson finished with 15 points while Eric James paced North Hills with 22. Zach Pollaro and Nathan Schanbacher each added 10 points in the win. Zion Moore scored a game-high 28 points for Belle Vernon while Alonzo Wade contributed 16 points and 12 rebounds.

Serra Catholic 72, Leechburg 42 – Isiah Petty and Owen Dumbroski had 17 points apiece for Serra Catholic (10-6, 4-4) in a Section 3-2A win. Pete Burke added 14 points for the Eagles. Jayden Floyd scored 21 and Mason Scitticatt had 10 for Leechburg (2-15, 0-8).

Shady Side Academy 46, Washington 40 – Ryan Frohlich had 16 points and Eli Teslovich scored 14 as Shady Side Academy (10-6) earned a win in the PBC Hall of Fame Classic at North Hills. De’Ondre Daugherty led Washington (11-6) with 14.

Thomas Jefferson 71, Central Catholic 59 Noah Prosser scored 18 points as Thomas Jefferson (14-3) used a dominant third quarter to defeat Central Catholic (10-7) at the PBC Hall of Fame Classic at North Hills. Evan Berger and Nicholas Trklja added 15 and 10 points, respectively, for Thomas Jefferson, which trailed by five at halftime before outscoring the Vikings 29-12 in the third quarter. Bradley Gompers paced Central Catholic with 14 points while Payton Wehner and Enzo Khalil added 11 points each.

Yough 54, Monessen 33 Yough (14-4) pulled past Monessen (13-3) with a big third quarter at the Shootout at Seton Hill to post its seventh straight win. Terek Crosby scored 25 points, including four 3-pointers for the Cougars, who outscored the Greyhounds 19-6 in the third. Austin Matthews added 18 for the Cougars. Daryl Ray led Monessen with right points. The Greyhounds had won 12 of 13.

Girls basketball

Brownsville 48, Yough 39 – Skyler Gates paced Brownsville (10-7, 3-3) with 21 points in a Section 4-3A win. Ava Clark added 14 for the Falcons and Zhariah Reed finished with 13. Autumn Matthews scored a game-high 22 for Yough (8-9, 1-5).

Butler 63, Plum 48 Amelia McMichael hit four 3-pointers on the way to scoring 22 points to lead Butler (4-13) to a nonsection win against Plum (12-6). Jessica Chwalik added 15 points, all on 3-pointers, for Butler. Megan Marston scored 16 points for Plum while Riley Stephans added 11 points and Tamia West contributed 10 points.

Cheswick Christian Academy 24, Harvest Baptist 21 Grace Kostick scored 10 points as Cheswick Christian Academy (4-5, 3-0) beat Harvest Baptist in a Southwestern Christian Athletic Conference matchup.

Monessen 40, West Greene 25 – Hailey Johnson scored 14 points and Madison Johnson added 12 as Monessen (14-3, 6-0) defeated West Greene (7-10, 4-2) in a Section 2-A contest. Trailing by two points heading into the final quarter, Monessen outscored West Greene 17-0 over the final eight minutes.

Moon 31, OLSH 26 Leiana Rucker had 13 points as Moon (11-6) beat OLSH (12-6) at the PBC Hall of Fame Classic at Ambridge. Jaedin Griggs added 10 points for Moon, which held OLSH to two points in the first quarter.

North Allegheny 58, Indiana 38 – Caroline Henderson led four Tigers in double figures with 20 points in a nonsection win. Grace Heliger had 14, Kellie McConnell scored 13 and Lydia Betz finished with 11 for North Allegheny (15-2). Cassie Boyer scored 17 for Indiana (12-4).

Obama Academy 48, Winchester Thurston 47 Gionna Simmons (21 points) and Taylor Phillips (19 points) accounted for all but eight of Obama Academy’s points in its nonsection win against Winchester Thurston. Obama Academy (5-7) trailed by two heading into the final quarter. Jasmine Hollins and Aleah Cooper scored 12 points each for Winchester Thurston (8-9).

Trinity 44, Hempfield 21 After playing five straight overtime games and losing four of them, Trinity (12-5) handled Hempfield (7-11) at the Shootout at Seton Hill. Ruby Morgan (11) and Aggie Niccolai (10) combined for as many points as Hempfield. The Spartans, who trailed 14-4 after the first quarter, have lost eight in a row.

Wrestling

Frank Ferguson Brooke Classic – Fox Chapel’s Landon Funk took first place at 113 pounds in West Virginia, pinning Ian Cornett of Buckhannon-Upshur in 4:47 in the finals. The Foxes took third place in the team race with 12 place-winners. Alex Kaufmann (157) finished second and Josh Alexander (138), Andrew Krasta (144) and Joey Geller (175) took third.

Seneca Valley finished fifth in the team race, led by 120-pound champ Connor Smith, who beat Liam Garcia of Buckhannon-Upshur in the finals, 10-5. Zachary Hill (132) and Brook Beres (175) were runners-up.

Fred Bell tournament – Central Valley’s Antonio Boni (121) and Brenan Morgan (215) brought home titles from the annual event at Grove City. Boni beat Trinity’s Dom Canali, 3-2, in the second tiebreaker in the finals and Morgan (215) pinned Ryan Dedrick of General McLane in 1:22 for the title.

McGuffey’s Lucas Barr (127), Trinity’s Blake Reihner (139), Moon’s Liam Costa (145) and Pine-Richland’s Vaughn Spencer (172) also took first. In the finals, Barr pinned Cranberry’s Elijah Brosius in 3:02, Reihner got past Pine-Richland’s Dominic Ferraro, 9-3, Costa edged Cambridge Springs’ Brody Beck, 2-1, and Spencer topped Grove City’s Hunter Hohman, 5-4.

Pine-Richland’s Mac Miller (160) and Laurel’s Casey Wilson (285) finished as runners-up.

Sharon Duals – Parker Anderson and Wyatt Foster went 5-0 on the day helping Knoch pick up a pair of wins. Anderson and Foster had four pins apiece. The Knights defeated Beaver County Christian and Erie. They dropped duals against Freedom, Girard and Bellefonte. Brayden McGowan and Cam Elliott earned three wins on the day.

Thomas Automotive Classic – Mt. Pleasant and Frazier each took home two first-place medals from Bedford. Jamison Poklembo (145) and Dylan Pizter (285) won titles for the Vikings. Ryan Celaschi (160) and Rune Lawrence (215) finished first for the Commodores. Burrell’s Cooper Hornack (139) and Derry’s Nathan Barkley (172) also won titles.

Ultimate Warrior – Peters Township’s Nicholas McGarrity (107), Bentworth’s Chris Vargo (127) and Indiana’s Carter Putt (133) won titles at West Branch. McGarrity beat Caleb Hummel of Philipsburg-Osceola, 5-1, Vargo major decisioned Logan Stewart of Reynolds, 13-4, and Putt topped Dylan O’Brien of Hickory, 5-2. Bentworth’s Vitali Daniels (189) earned a runner-up finish.
