High school roundup for Jan. 3, 2019: Aulbach, Amalia lead Blackhawk girls past KO

There was plenty of Division I talent on the court Thursday night, and three of the WPIAL’s top players put their skills on display.

Mady Aulbach scored 31 points, and Mackenzie Amalia tallied 22 as No. 2 Blackhawk defeated Keystone Oaks, 86-63, in a Section 2-4A girls basketball game.

Aulbach, who is committed to Youngstown State, hit five 3-pointers, and Amalia, a Robert Morris recruit, had three for the Cougars (8-2, 3-0).

Gillian Piccolino, a Kennesaw State commit, had 24 points for Keystone Oaks (7-4, 2-2).

North Hills 53, Butler 49 — Lexi Kotwica had 17 points, and Savannah Powers added 16 as North Hills (2-7, 1-3) won a Section 1-6A game in double overtime. Jordan Kauffman had 25 points for Butler (5-4, 2-2).

Connellsville 58, Canon-McMillan 54 — Baileigh Bishop had 19 points, and Sara Aumer scored 16 as Connellsville (3-6, 1-3) won in Section 2-6A.

Tamara Mathis tallied 18 points, 10 rebounds and 10 steals for the Big Macs (5-5, 2-2).

West Allegheny 67, Montour 42 — Amika Janis had 20 points, and Grace Faulk had 16 as West Allegheny (6-3, 1-3) won in Section 1-5A.

Montour’s Courtney Thomas scored 25 points to set the school record for career scoring (1,284 points) in the loss.

Franklin Regional 52, Mars 51 — Jordan Yaniga drained a basket as time expired to give the Panthers a victory over Class 5A No. 2 Mars in a Section 2 game.

Yaniga finished with 14 points, and Cali Konek had 24 points, with six 3-pointers, for Franklin Regional (6-3, 2-1).

Tai Johnson scored 23 points to lead Mars (8-2, 3-1).

Latrobe 72, Laurel Highlands 55 — Rachel Ridilla had 27 points to guide Latrobe (6-2, 2-2) to a Section 3-5A victory. Kayla White and Anna Rafferty had 10 points each for the Wildcats, and White had 12 rebounds.

Taylor Smith scored 25 points for Laurel Highlands (3-5, 0-4).

Greensburg Salem 71, Highlands 19 — Megan Kallock scored 24 points, and Abby Mankins added 19 as Greensburg Salem (6-4, 2-2) rolled to a Section 1-4A victory.

The Golden Lions opened the game on a 27-4 run and led 50-12 at halftime.

Belle Vernon 55, Yough 24 — Lindsay Steeber had 24 points to lead Belle Vernon (7-3, 4-0) to a win in Section 3-4A. Rachel Wobrak added 11 points, and Kaci Bitonti had 10 for the Leopards, who led 36-16 at halftime.

Southmoreland 37, Ringgold 22 — Sarah Pisula had 15 points to lead Southmoreland (8-2, 3-1) to a Section 3-4A victory. The Scotties closed the game on a 12-1 run.

Shady Side Academy 34, Derry 27 — Led by 13 points from Arianna Goitz, No. 5 Shady Side Academy (8-1, 4-0) secured a Section 3-3A victory. Destiny Roberts had 10 points to lead Derry (3-6, 2-2).

The Indians opened the game with a 12-6 run but trailed 20-14 at halftime. Shady Side closed the game on a 10-1 run.

Greensburg CC 56, Aquinas Academy 28 — Melina Maietta had 18 points, and Bella Skatell added 11 points and eight rebounds as No. 2 Greensburg Central Catholic (7-1, 1-0) rolled to a Section 3-A win.

Anna Eisaman had six points and six assists in the victory.

Quaker Valley 44, Hopewell 41 — Bailey Garbee had 18 points to lift Quaker Valley (6-3, 2-1) to a Section 2-4A win.

Avonworth 63, Beaver 61 — Hayden Robinson’s 22 points and Harris Robinson’s two free throws as time expired led Avonworth (6-3, 4-0) to a win in Section 1-3A. Kathryn Goetz added 16 points and 11 rebounds in the win.

OLSH 49, Laurel 39 — Ashley Norling’s 26 points paced No. 3 OLSH (6-3, 4-0) in a Section 1-2A win.

Sto-Rox 44, Aliquippa 36 — Aliyah Young had 13 points, 17 rebounds and 10 blocks as Sto-Rox (5-4, 2-0) won in Section 1-2A. Alashia Washington added 17 points and 17 rebounds in the victory.

Serra Catholic 44, Ellis School 31 — Gigi Mele-Madigan had 11 points and 11 rebounds to lead Class 2A No. 2 Serra Catholic (7-1, 3-0) to a Section 2 win.

Frazier 55, Burgettstown 38 — Brooke Poling tallied 29 points as Frazier (5-5, 3-1) won in Section 3-2A.

St. Joseph 34, Propel Andrew Street 13 — Maddie Willard scored a game-high 11 points to lead St. Joseph (1-7, 1-1) to its first win of the season by knocking off Section 3-A foe Propel Andrew Street (3-5, 0-1).

Deer Lakes 57, Steel Valley 16 — The Lancers put up 23 points in the first quarter and ended the game with a running clock, rolling past Section 3-3A rival Steel Valley (1-8, 1-3). Victoria Keibler led Deer Lakes (7-2, 3-1) with a game-high 16 points, and Abby Buechel chipped in 10.

Indiana 34, Burrell 31 — Hope Cook hit a 3-pointer with 1.5 seconds left to break a 31-31 tie and defeat Burrell in Section 1- 4A play. Cook finished with 11 points for Indiana (3-7, 1-3). Kaylen Sharrow scored a game-high 16 points for Burrell (3-6, 1-3).

Winchester Thurston 43, Riverview 32 — The Raiders (4-6, 2-1) trailed by one point at halftime before Winchester Thurston pulled away in the second half in a Section 2-2A game. Mya Roberts led Winchester Thurston (4-3, 2-2) with 16 points.

East Allegheny 63, Valley 40 — Amaia Johnson scored a game-high 25 points as East Allegheny defeated Valley in Section 3-3A play. Abby Henderson scored 22 points and Majesty Alford added 10 points for East Allegheny (7-2, 3-1). Auveonna Perkins scored 20 points to lead Valley (2-8, 0-4).

Clairton 55, Leechburg 30 — Clairton outscored Leechburg, 35-10, in the second half en route to a Section 3-A win. Ionia Chapman, Cheyenne Galloway and Keneiah Ogletree scored 12 points each for Clairton (7-2, 2-0). Claudia Henry scored 11 points for Leechburg (2-6, 0-2).

Boys basketball

Freedom 66, Carlynton 62 — Cole Beck scored 23 points as Freedom (2-6, 2-2) won in Section 2-3A. Chauncey Mickens scored 23 points, and DeQuay Canton added 17 for Carlynton (4-6, 0-3).

Brownsville 62, Waynesburg 51 — Nick Seto scored 22 points to vault Brownsville (2-7) to a nonsection win. Lucas Garber tallied 25 points for Waynesburg (6-3).

Riverview 64, Northgate 62 — Riverview trailed by seven entering the fourth quarter, but used a 24-point fourth quarter to complete the comeback and earn a Section 1-2A win over Northgate. Nate Black and Aiden Sebastian scored 14 points for Riverview. Noah Black scored 12 points and Jack Stock added 10 points for the Raiders (5-3, 3-1). Malcolm Randall led all scorers with 26 points for Northgate (1-9, 0-4).

Wrestling

Greensburg Salem 72, Woodland Hills 0 — Cooper Phillips (145 pounds), Jake Alwine (170), John Meyers (195), Trent Patrick (220) and Billy McChesney (285) all earned pins as No. 7 Greensburg Salem (3-0, 3-0) won a Class AAA, Section 1A match. The Golden Lions also won seven matches by forfeit.

Hockey

Burrell 7, Central Valley 6 — Giovanni Palumbo scored the game-winner off a Jonas Sopko assist eight minutes into the third period to help Burrell win a PIHL Division II matchup. Tyler Stewart, Dylan Zelonka and Cole Vazzana all scored a pair of goals for Burrell (13-0). Benjamin Krummert led Central Valley (6-6) with two goals.
