High school roundup for March 15, 2024: Hampton, Lincoln Park win to set up WPIAL rematch

Peter Kramer scored 22 points to lead Hampton to a 60-54 victory over District 3 champion Eastern York (20-9) in a PIAA Class 4A boys basketball quarterfinal Friday night.

Alex Nyilas added 17 points and Liam Mignogna scored 15 for the Talbots (25-4). Hampton will face Lincoln Park in Monday’s semifinals, which is a rematch of the WPIAL Class 4A championship game.

Lincoln Park 89, North Catholic 74 – Brandin Cummings and Mikey Crawford scored 23 points each to lead Lincoln Park (26-3) past North Catholic (18-10) in the Class 4A quarterfinals. Meleek Thomas had 22 points for the defending state champion Leopards. Max Hurray scored a game-high 30 for the Trojans and Jude Rottmann had 20.

Bishop Carroll 80, Union 73 – Jace Casses scored 22 points and Luke Repko added 21 as District 6 champion Bishop Carroll (18-10) used a 50-point second half to pick up a Class A quarterfinal win. Parker Alexander finished with 14 and Will Tremel 12 for Bishop Carroll, which will meet Imani Christian/Farrell in the semifinals Monday. Braylon Thomas scored a game-high 30 points for Union (17-12). Lucas Stanley added 24 and Dayne Jonke 11 for the Scotties.

Imani Christian 70, Farrell 60 – Nate Brazil scored 27 points, Avery Wesley followed with 18 and Marcus Williams added 10 to lead Imani Christian (17-10) to a Class A quarterfinal win. Danny Odem scored 27 points and Dontaye Bell had 14 for Farrell (21-6). Imani Christian will face Bishop Carroll in Monday’s semifinals.

Girls basketball

Mercyhurst Prep 54, Avonworth 41 – Mercyhurst Prep (24-3) raced out to a 23-2 lead in the first quarter, which proved to be too much for Avonworth (24-3) to overcome, and the Lakers secured a Class 3A quarterfinal victory. Becca Goetz led the Antelopes with 20 points and Greta O’Brien scored 15. Olivia Kulyk had 24 points, including 22 in the first half for the Lakers, who advanced to play Westmont Hilltop in Monday’s quarterfinals.

Westmont Hilltop 47, Shady Side Academy 41 – Christiana Gordon scored 21 points to lead Westmont Hilltop (22-4) to a Class 3A quarterfinal win, setting up a semifinal matchup with District 10 champ Mercyhurst Prep. Maggie Spell scored 19 for WPIAL champion Shady Side Academy (26-3).

Baseball

Carlynton 7, Northgate 5 – Carlynton (1-0) scored three runs in the bottom of the sixth to rally for a nonsection win over Northgate (0-1). Jacob Hughes had three hits for the Cougars. Sean Hart and Eric Firle collected two hits each.

Deer Lakes 14, Steel Valley 3 – Ryan Cochran tripled and drove in two runs and Jake Fleisher and Lucas Derose had two RBIs apiece to lead Deer Lakes (1-0) to a nonsection win. Garrett Cherpak and Immanuel Owens each hit a double for Steel Valley (0-1).

Eden Christian 9, McGuffey 0 – Caleb Emswiler singled, doubled, drove in two runs and was the winning pitcher with seven strikeouts for Eden Christian (1-0) in a nonsection victory over McGuffey (0-1). Noah Emswiler had an RBI triple and Brody Hull had two hits and an RBI for the Warriors.

Ellwood City 4, Burgettstown 0 – Bucky Biskup and Aaron Lake each hit a single and Sam Landis drove in a run for Ellwood City (1-0) in a nonsection win. Riley Kennedy doubled for Burgettstown (0-1).

Liberty County (Ga.) 7, Yough 3 – Carlos Singleton homered and drove in a pair to lead Liberty County (5-7) to a win. Hayden Eicher singled and doubled, Nate Bell and John Steban also had two hits apiece, and Aidan Shaffer doubled for Yough (0-1).

Mt. Lebanon 4, Upper St. Clair 3 – Nolan Smith hit a walk-off single to finish off a comeback nonsection win for Mt. Lebanon (1-0). The Blue Devils rallied by scoring two runs in the sixth and seventh innings. Aidan Crochier homered for Upper St. Clair (0-1).

North Hills 12, Gateway 1 – Cooper Ravenstahl tripled and drove in two runs and Tristan Weimann, Zach Kuhn and Zachary Sprinkle each hit a double for North Hills (1-0) in a nonsection win over Gateway (0-1).

Plum 6, St. Petersburg (Fla.) 2 – Jake Domkowski singled twice and drove in two runs to help Plum (1-1) earn a win in Florida. Dom Beyer singled twice and Cole Kemmerer had an RBI triple. The Mustangs earned a split on the day, losing 3-0 to Northeast (Fla.) in their second game.

Shaler 5, Fox Chapel 2 – Shaler (1-0) scored four times in the top of the sixth to rally for a nonsection win. Brady McGuire, Logan Bauer, Colby McGuire and Alex Venezia had a double apiece for the Titans. Troy Susnak hit a two-run homer for Fox Chapel (0-1).

Valley 12, Highlands 2 – Dante Taliani and Julian Danko each hit a double and Wesley Schrock drove in three runs for Valley (1-0) in a nonsection win over Highlands (0-1).

West Mifflin 7, Allderdice 0 – Zane Griffaton smacked a two-run homer for West Mifflin (1-0) in a nonsection win. Nadav Gill singled twice for Allderdice (0-1).

Softball

Belle Vernon 13, Franklin Regional 0 – Gracie Sokol and Katie Sokol each hit a home run as Belle Vernon (1-0) took care of Franklin Regional (0-1) in five innings in a nonsection win. Mailey Hayes and Lauren VanDinner hit a pair of doubles apiece for the Leopards and Talia Ross struck out a dozen batters in a five-inning one-hitter.

Chartiers Valley 22, Pine-Richland 14 – Lilly Duffill belted a pair of three-run homers to help Chartiers Valley (1-0) top Pine-Richland (0-1) in a high-scoring nonsection game. Taylor Walsh homered and drove in six for the Colts.

North Catholic 10, East Allegheny 1 – Natalia Rushak, Caroline Craska and Clare Kotwica each hit a home run and Liliana Koller hit a triple for North Catholic (1-0) in a nonsection win over East Allegheny (0-1). Winning pitcher Kennedy Brown struck out 18 for the Trojans.

North Hills 8, Deer Lakes 4 – Abby Sutton hit a grand slam in the third inning to power North Hills (1-0) to a nonsection win over Deer Lakes (0-1). Emma Culver doubled and Kaylee Bischoff tripled for the Indians. Siena Plummer homered and Sophia Laurenza singled three times for the Lancers.

Penn Hills 17, Gateway 7 – Cassidy Burkovich hit a triple and home run and drove in four runs, Hannah Pugliese homered and Shania Lewis doubled for Penn Hills (1-0) in a nonsection win over Gateway (0-1).

Peters Township 8, Waynesburg 4 – Audra Hanke went 3 for 3 and plated a trio of runs to help Peters Township (1-0) top Waynesburg (0-1) in a nonsection contest.

South Side 12, Avella 2 – Alison DeLong went 3 for 3 with a double and Sophia Adams doubled with two RBIs for South Side (1-0) in a nonsection win. Avery Rado hit a home run for Avella (0-1).

Girls lacrosse

Blackhawk 18, Bethel Park 13 – Mia Piocquidio scored a school-record 10 goals to lead Blackhawk to a nonsection win, Chloe Huston and Lauren Fair added three goals apiece and Ryleigh McKnight scored twice for the Cougars.

Chartiers Valley 14, Norwin 6 – Juliana Betts had five goals and three assists and Ava Warzinski added three goals and four assists to lead Chartiers Valley to a nonsection win. Mallorie LaGamba, Megan Witte and Calle Milliken added two goals apiece.

Moon 18, Baldwin 5 – Allyssa Anstis scored seven goals and Seanna Rodriguez and Reese Keslar added three each for Moon in a nonsection win. Avery Machusko and Marleigh Therrien each scored twice.

Pine-Richland 11, South Fayette 5 – Cate Gentile scored five goals for Pine-Richland in a nonsection win. Madeline Mill added three goals, Kendyll Jerry scored twice, and Mallory Boivin had a goal and four assists for the Rams.
