The bright sunshine was shining down on Class 1-A in the WPIAL on a wonderful afternoon for high school football and conclusion of Week One. A pair of Eastern Conference frays and a Big 7 Conference tilt made up the schedule, setting the stage for three quarterbacks to do damage with both their arms and their legs.

Jeddy Young – Western Beaver

Western Beaver entered the 2016 campaign on a ten game losing streak which included a winless 0-9 2015 season. But that is all a distant memory thanks to a quarterback who may be accused of playing Jeddy mind tricks with his success on the ground instead of the air. Jeddy Young rushed for 153 yards and scored three touchdowns, including a 4-yard run with a two-point conversion scamper that snapped a 22-22 tie in the fourth quarter of the Golden Beavers 30-22 come-from-behind victory over the host Summit Academy Knights in a Class 1-A Big 7 Conference contest.

Dom Eisaman – Greensburg Central Catholic

After a shockingly shake start last week to the 2016 season in which they lost big to Westinghouse, Greensburg Central Catholic needed a lift as they made history in the first district game for Imani Christian Saturday at historic Graham Field in Wilkinsburg. After GCC running back Alvin Ross was kept in check early, senior quarterback Dom Eisaman delivered as he hit on 9 of 17 passes for 105 yards and a 12-yard scoring strike in the fourth quarter for the game winning points, plus he scored on runs of 1 and 5 yards as the Centurions won their Class 1-A Eastern Conference opener 23-20 over the host Saints.

Jake Hanus – Riverview

There have been a lot of BLACK Saturday afternoons over the last decade at Riverside Park in Oakmont as the once top-tier Riverview High School football team had slipped into the second division of the Class 1-A Eastern Conference with eight straight years of being home for the postseason. But 2016 got off to a GOLDEN start thanks to quarterback Jake Hanus who threw for 102 yards on 7 completions, which included a 40-yard touchdown pass to Brandon Davis, plus he opened the scoring with a 76-yard run to the house in the Raiders 28-7 triumph over the visiting Leechburg Blue Devils.
