North Allegheny & Greensburg CC Win WPIAL Girls Team Golf Gold

A pair of new girls team golf district champions were crowned Thursday at the Cedarbrook Golf Course in Rostraver as North Allegheny won AAA gold while Greensburg Central Catholic claimed the AA title. The Tigers won WPIAL girls golf championships six times between 1986 and 1993, however they haven't won since, ending a 22-year drought. NA edged Peters Township by only two strokes. Meanwhile, the gap was 15 strokes for the AA champion Centurions, who won a WPIAL crown in the teams first year of existence. Led by WPIAL Girls Class AA individual champion Olivia Zambruno, GCC cruised past defending champion Sewickley Academy to make history. Chicks Picks – Week 7 – 2015
Welcome to Week 7 of the high school football season. The 2015 Stretch Run is here – that time of year when the regular season is coming down to the wire with key games and the postseason looming.  Chick’s Picks feels that this is a critical time for the MSA Sports Network team to get mentally prepared for the playoffs, just as do the players and coaches around the WPIAL.  So, each year, Chick’s Picks takes it upon herself to organize a group exercise activity as a means of building teamwork and mental toughness for this most important time of the season.

Hometown Girls Volleyball Recap – Brentwood Spartans – 10/15/2015
Both Brentwood and Carlynton were on the outside looking in as far as playoff spots from Class A Section 2 were concerned coming into their match Wednesday night. But that didn't stop both teams from putting on a thriller at Brentwood High School as the host Spartans prevailed 3-2 over the Cougars. The Spartans got off to a fast start in Game 1 with a 5-0 run thanks to the service game of junior Molly Huffman.  Brentwood continued to dominate the first game, leading by as many as 11 points.  Even near the end of that first game, however, the momentum started to shift toward Carlynton.  Despite being outscored, 9-3, the Spartans still won Game 1, 25-20.

District College Football Preview for Saturday, October 17th

The middle of October brings cooler weather, shorter days and heated play on the district college football front.  In the NEC Duquesne looks to hold on to the top spot, while in the PSAC Clarion looks to accomplish a record noy oosted by the Golden Eagles in over 30 years.  The PAC has a two way battle at 4-0 from outside the keystone state, while in New Wilminton Westminster is off to their best start since joining the conference.  Here are previews of ALL the games:

WPIAL Big Game Hunting – Week Seven 2015
The “Stretch Run” for 2015 is on us, the final third of the regular season will start this weekend with several big games around the WPIAL. Players, whether you are playing for a number one seed, a conference title, a home playoff game, a shot at the playoffs, a winning season, or to get your only win of the season, play hard, keep your head up when you tackle and make the most of this time in your life. If you are going to watch, cheer hard, bellyache less about the refs and the coaches, support your kids and your team without feeling like you need to control or have some input as to how the other team should or should not conduct themselves. Hometown Girls Volleyball Recap – Central Valley Warriors – 10/14/2015
The Central Valley Lady Warriors are playoff bound! Coach Josh Springer's squad clinched a playoff berth with a Section 2-AA victory over Ambridge in straight sets 25-17, 25-16, 25-21. Central Valley jumped to early leads in each of the first two sets, never trailing in either of the opening sets. The Lady Warriors capitalized on early miscues from the Lady Bridgers. Balen Brown was the main beneficiary, tallying five of her match-high 11 kills in the first set.

Hometown Girls Volleyball Recap – Bishop Canevin Crusaders – 10/23/2015
What began as a seemingly meaningless non-class matchup between two of the top programs in class AA and A in girls volleyball turned into a fight to the finish between #3 Montour and #7 Bishop Canevin.  Bishop Canevin returned to its winning ways 3-2 with a decisive final set victory 15-6 after Montour had won the third and fourth sets. Bishop Canevin carried a perfect record through the month of September, but as the calendar turned, the Crusaders dropped two of their first three section matches to Serra Catholic and Vincentian Academy.  BC appeared ready, focused, and into the game as if it were a section contest and was able to jump out and take the first set relatively handily 25-16.

Hometown Girls Soccer Recap – Fox Chapel Foxes – 10/13/2015
Fox Chapel came into Monday night’s match against Gateway riding an 11-game winning streak and also sporting a 21-game unbeaten streak at home and both streaks continued with a 4-0 shutout win at Fox Chapel Stadium. The Foxes attack dominated the match and Fox Chapel possessed the ball for most of the night but held only a 1-0 lead at halftime. Senior forward Taylor Cohen scored the game’s first goal when she nudged a Deena DeBaldo feed past Gators goalkeeper Emma Skledar with her left foot in the 8th minute. Fox Chapel had 13 first half opportunities and registered 6 shots on goal in the first 40 minutes.

Hometown Girls Soccer Recap – Penn-Trafford Warriors
The Penn-Trafford girls’ soccer team displayed dominance in all phases of the game en route to a 7-0 victory against Hempfield Area on Monday. Host Penn-Trafford improved to 10-1 in Class AAA Section 1 (10-2-1 overall), while Hempfield Area, clinging to third place in the section, fell to 6-4 (7-4-1 overall). With the triumph, the Warriors keep their section title hopes intact, with a battle to determine section supremacy slated for later this week.

Hometown Boys Soccer Recap – Penn-Trafford Warriors
Penn Trafford scored twice in the first half to avenge their only Section-1 defeat of the season by defeating Hempfield 2-0 Monday.  The Warriors stuck first in the 19th minute, as Austin Kreutzberger found the net off of a feed from Joe Salesi.  Salesi pushed the ball ahead to Kreutzberger, who's shot from 20-yards out found the inside of the far post behind Spartans goalkeeper Nate Burkhart.

WPIAL Alum Q&A – Dante Nania
Dante Nania enjoyed a prolific high school career as the quarterback for the Hempfield Area Spartans, and he has gone on to enjoy great success collegiately at both Youngstown State University and now Slippery Rock University. This week’s WPIAL Alum Q&A puts the senior signalcaller under the spotlight. While at Hempfield, Nania was a four-year letterwinner and earned first-team all-conference recognition. In his senior campaign in 2010, he threw for more than 1,500 yards and 15 touchdowns.

Hometown Boys Soccer Recap – Upper St. Clair Panthers – 10/11/2015
On a crisp clear fall afternoon two long time rivals got together in a Hometown soccer game at Upper Saint Clair high school. The home standing Panthers came away with an impressive 7-0 victory over the Blue Devils.  Rivals in every sport and neighboring communities everyone was looking forward to this clash, but the Panthers on senior day had an easy time handling their neighbor. USC opened the scoring on a goal from Steffano Paolino at 11:07 of the first half. The Panthers tic tac toed passes around from right to left and he was wide open in front to tap it in for a 1-0 lead.

WPIAL Saturday’s Scholastic Starz – Week Six
Friday night from Week 6 around the WPIAL featured a plethora of big games. The sixth Saturday of the 2015 campaign saw a smorgasbord of District 7 gridiron action. A taste of high school football with teams from all FOUR classifications made up the busiest Saturday of the season with six football contests. McKeesport, Moon, Burgettstown and Freedom picked a postcard perfect day to celebrate Homecoming 2015. But who was wearing the crown at the end of the day for top performances?
