WPIAL Coaches Corner – Win Palmer

In this new feature titled “Coach’s Corner”, I will be interviewing a different coach every week and asking them questions about their personal life and about coaching. Hopefully their answers will not only shed some light on how they coach their respective teams, but also allow readers to get to know the men behind the fields/courts. This week highlights Sewickley Academy boys basketball coach Win Palmer. Now in his 17th season coaching in the WPIAL, Coach Palmer has 3 WPIAL championships and one PIAA crown. Also the school’s athletic director and softball coach, Palmer previously coached in Virginia before coming to Sewickley. It was six years ago that Kyle DeGregorio went through a painful experience of being let go as Baldwin’s boys basketball coach. But DeGregorio eventually found new coaching life a little farther south down Route 51, and has given the Belle Vernon program a new heartbeat. Belle Vernon is 10-3 and tied with McGuffey and South Fayette for first place in WPIAL Class 4A Section 3. To qualify for the WPIAL Team Wrestling playoff field, you first have to qualify for the team sectionals. The top three teams from each sub-section qualify for the Section Championship Tournament. The top team in each sub-section faces the runner-up in the opposing sub-section with the two winners then doing battle for the section championship while the two third place finishers face off to determine the fifth qualifier from that section that will move on to the 2017 WPIAL Team Wrestling Playoffs. WPIAL Alum Q&A – Evan Bonnaure

Playing a high-school sport with a parent as the head coach can be both beneficial and challenging for an athlete. Evan Bonnaure excelled for the basketball team that his father, Rich, coached at South Fayette, and now he's one of the top performers for La Roche's team, too. Bonnaure is this week's feature for the WPIAL Alum Q&A. As a junior with the Lions, Bonnaure averaged in double figures in scoring, netting just more than 10 points per contest. Meanwhile, his team compiled a record of 16-7, including a 10-2 in section play. This week features Vincentian Academy girls basketball coach Ronald Moncrief. Coach Moncrief has coached the Royals for 11 seasons, including this year. He has led them to 6 WPIAL titles in the last 7 years, and won back to back PIAA state crowns in 2014 and 2015. Over the next five days, WPIAL boys basketball has three of the top games of the entire season and all three are on MSA Sports. While the teams make the matchups big, the players involved make the contests bigger than big. The big games are Friday and Tuesday. WPIAL Alum Q&A – Tristan Buxton

Although Tristan Buxton was a talented grappler at Trinity High School, he perhaps did not establish himself as one of the elite competitors in the district. Now wrestling at the college level at Waynesburg, Buxton has developed into one of the best on the mat. As a result, he's in the spotlight for this week's installment of the WPIAL Alum Q&A. Buxton was a three-time letterwinner for the Hillers, beginning as a sophomore in 2011-12. He competed in the 113-pound weight class in sectionals, but did not place. The following season, Buxton dropped to 106, and compiled an overall mark of 27-10. In the Class AAA Section 4 tournament, he finished third.
