Kiski Valley boys, girls rugby teams closer to state titles

The Kiski Valley boys and girls rugby teams traveled to Cumberland Valley this weekend hoping to bring a pair of state titles home, and both are a win away from achieving the goal.

The boys scored a 19-15 win over Elizabethtown, and the girls team cruised to a 58-12 victory over Gettysburg in their respective semifinals Saturday.

The girls will play West Shore United in the Rugby PA Club Division finals at 11:30 a.m. Sunday. The boys play Hempfield (District 3) in the Division II final at 1:30 p.m. Both matches are at Cumberland Valley.

Hayden Wright, Andrew Bigler and Logan Treich had trys for the boys team, which advanced to the state finals for the second time. Brent Hrobak made two of three conversion kicks. The Titans (6-2) wonthe state championship in 2016.

Joni Shirley had six trys to pace the Lady Titans (5-1). Kelsi Magill scored two trys and Jessica Ayres and Lily Kastelic had one apiece. Rilee Roach had four conversions.

The girls advanced to the state finals for the third consecutive year and are aiming for their first championship. They defeated West Shore United, 22-17, in the regular season on April 22.
