Hometown Volleyball Match Recap – Chartiers-Houston Buccaneers

The Chartiers-Houston girls’ volleyball team notched a critical victory for its playoff bid on Tuesday, as the host Lady Buccaneers captured a straight-sets win over Burgettstown. All three sets were tightly contested, as Chartiers-Houston triumphed 25-20, 25-22, 25-23 to improve its record to 6-2 in Class A Section 6 play. Meanwhile, the Lady Blue Devils fall to 3-5 in section play, and are currently outside the playoff picture. In the opening set, the Buccaneers controlled the play early, but the Blue Devils rebounded to take a 16-13 advantage. Senior libero Kassie Kesneck keyed the comeback for Chartiers-Houston, though, as her potent served helped spark an 8-0 run for the Bucs.
Hometown Volleyball Match Recap – Blackhawk Cougars – 10/01/2014
The Blackhawk Cougars continued on the road towards a possible section title with a 3-1 victory over the Laurel Spartans in WPIAL Section 1-AA girls volleyball action last night in Chippewa Township. The win moves Blackhawk to 8-1 in section play, trailing only Hopewell in the standings at the start of play on Tuesday. Those two teams could meet for the section title on October 16th. Blackhawk took the first game by a 25-18 score, pulling away in the later stages with the help of senior Nikki Beatty with some key points to allow the Cougars to gain a 21-13 advantage which they would not relinquish.WPIAL Plays of the Week – Week Five 2014

In Hometown Volleyball action at Avonworth High School, the home standing Antelopes lost to the Butler Golden Tornados in a non section game by a 3-0 match score. Avonworth with only four seniors, and 3 juniors is a very young team and it showed on the court Monday night. Avonworth led 1-0 in game one and the match was close thru ten points at 5-5. But the Tornado's took over from there jumping out to a 16-8 lead. The Antelopes would come back and cut the lead to 19-14 with inspired play, but Butler was too strong and finished off the game scoring six of the last 10 points to win 25-18.
C-M’s Lauren Waller & GCC’s Olivia Zambruno Win WPIAL Girls Golf Gold
On a gorgeous day in Western PA their were two lady golfers crowned champions. In AAA Lauren Waller of Canon-McMillan repeated as champion shooting a 4 under 68. A wild finish in Oakland, a record setting performance in Loretto and another home win for Slippery Rock highlighted the slate of local college football action on Saturday. Here are recaps of ALL the games, including one heard here on the Network. Carnegie Mellon 22 – Geneva 21 Trailing 19-7 in the fourth quarter, freshman Nick Cook came on for an injured Aaron Channing and led the Golden Tornadoes to a touchdown, but the GT’s could not find the end zone until the game’s final play and came up just short. On a picturesque evening at Dormont Stadium, the only WPIAL game on the fifth Saturday of the 2014 season took place. The stakes were high with five teams, Fort Cherry, Brentwood, Northgate and the two teams slated for Saturday night, Chartiers-Houston and Bishop Canevin all muddled together with one game separating the five in the battle for the final two playoff spots in the Black Hills Conference. They say one is the loneliest number that you'll ever see. Unless you are flying solo on a Saturday in Primetime. That was the case for the final WPIAL football game in Week 5. 122 district teams strutted their stuff on Friday, now a pair of Class A Black Hills Conference teams battled until the games final minute to officially close the door on the first half of the season. We hit the midway point of the 2014 WPIAL football regular season with points a plenty. Offenses around the district continue to amass record setting numbers with good solid defenses creeping closer to the endangered species list. Friday night saw 12 teams score over 50 points and five of those teams eclipsed the 60 point plateau. And that doesn't even include the traditional 70+ point total for Clairton. Whether it’s the football end zone or a soccer net, both places are treated like a crime zone by the fall sports teams at Pittsburgh Central Catholic. They might as well put yellow tape around the end zone or net because the Central Catholic teams take a “keep out” attitude towards them. It is unusual for two fall sports teams to have such a successful zero tolerance policy. The Central Catholic football team is 4-0 and has allowed only seven points in four games. The Vikings have three shutouts and are the No. 1 defensive team in the WPIAL. The Central Catholic boys soccer team has played 11 games and has allowed only one goal. Every weekend, there are 62 high school football games played around the WPIAL, most of them on Friday and generally less than a handful on Saturday. But as we hit the midway point of this 2014 campaign, we also had the busiest night of the scholastic football season with ALL but one district game being played under the lights on the Fifth Friday. Hometown Volleyball Match Recap – South Side Rams
In Hometown Girls Volleyball action at South Side High School in Hookstown, PA., the Our Lady Of Sacred Heart Chargers defeat the home standing Rams by a 3-0 match score and remain undefeated at 7-0 in single A section 4. South Side falls to 5-2 with their only two section losses coming at the hands of the Chargers.
