MSA Sports Baseball Playoff Recaps for Friday, May 16th

We are coming to end of the first week of the district baseball postseason, but the biggest splash thus far came on one of the final games from the First Round. A #16-seed stunned a #1-seed in the Class Quad-A opening round knocking out the first top seed, while AAAA-4, AA-1 and AA-5 were all a perfect 3-0 on Saturday. Here are recaps from the Class AAAA and Class AA First Round games from Friday. Mother Nature made it a two day event at Cibik Stadium at Baldwin High School which started Thursday and ended Saturday. Here are ALL of the results from the 2014 WPIAL Boys and Girls Class AAA and Class AA Individual Trck & Field Championships. Here are eight medalists in each event from Saturday’s WPIAL championship meet at Baldwin. The top five finishers in Class AA and the top four in Class AAA automatically qualify for the PIAA meet next Friday and Saturday in Shippensburg University. Others who finish in the top eight must meet qualifying standards to make the PIAA meet. While the forecast was shaky, it turned out to be a wonderful day in Western Pa with only five games on the schedule. It took three days, but the Class AAA First Round came to an end and because of the suspended West Mifflin vs South Fayette contest fro Tuesday night, all of the Triple-A Quarterfinals were bumped back to Saturday. So it was Class A claiming the spotlight as the surprise results continued in Round Two, leaving top-seed California to battle in the Semifinals along with the #10, #11 and #13 seeds in the postseason. After a Monday of rain delays, lightning delays, suspended game and postponements, the sun was shining bright...at least during the afternoon hours as two classifications in baseball and two classes in softball nearly put round one in the books. NA & Beaver Boys Along With Hempfield & SF Girls Win WPIAL Team Track Titles

Three teams were able to repeat their golden success from a year ago while one school tasted a team track title for the very first time. Hempfield captured a third straight girls Class AAA crown while both the North Allegheny boys in Class AAA and the South Fayette Lions in girls Class AA won for the second consecutive year. Meanwhile, it was a first time championship captured by the Beaver Bobcats in boys Class AA on Monday at Baldwin High School. Rain was the big winner on opening day of the 2014 WPIAL Baseball Playoffs. With 15 games scheduled, only five games made to it the books while two others were suspended and eight were postponed until Tuesday. With every zero that he puts on the scoreboard, Blackhawk senior pitcher Brendan McKay continues to climb the national list for the longest scoreless streak? That naturally brings up two questions: Is McKay anywhere near the national record and does he have a chance to break it before he graduates? The answers are yes and yes. McKay beat Montour, 3-0, earlier this week to stretch his scoreless streak to 58 innings, dating back to last season. That is the fourth-longest streak in U.S. high school history, according to the National Federation of State High School Associations, the governing body of high school sports in the country.
Shady Side & Sewickley Academy’s Sweep WPIAL Boys Team Tennis Titles Again
And the beat goes on in WPIAL Boys Team Tennis. It wasn't easy, but Shady Side Academy captured its fourth straight Class AAA championship with a narrow victory over Mount Lebanon Thursday afternoon at North Allegheny High School. Meanwhile, the dynasty continues in Class AA as Sewickley Academy made it ELEVEN consecutive district championships with a victory over Mars. Hometown Softball Broadcast Recap for Chartiers-Houston on 5/7/14
It took over 48 hours, but Chartiers-Houston (10-6, 8-4) was finally able to take down Fort Cherry by a 15-0 score in a three inning mercy rule win on Wednesday at Allison Park Elementary School Field. The game, which was started on Monday and finished on Wednesday due to lightning and heavy rain, saw the Bucs draw 15 walks and have 4 batters hit by pitches. Kassie Kesneck picked up the win for Chartiers-Houston, going three innings, while surrendering only two hits, striking out three and walking just one batter. It's district postseason time again, so MSA Sports is always ready to lend a helping hand in seeding the brackets. it's not a true ranking because in general, the WPIAL avoids teams from the same section playing each other. Here is our two cents, which is worth just that as 62 teams get ready to settle it on the field starting next week. Quad-A and Triple-A have 16 teams with no bye's. Double-A has 15 teams with one first round bye which is the same set up for Single-A. The First Round consists of #8 vs #9, #7 vs #10, #6 vs #11, #5 vs #12, #4 vs #13, #3 vs #14, #2 vs #15 and #1 vs #16. WPIAL CLASS AAAA: 1) HEMPFIELD SPARTANS (16-3) 2) NORTH ALLEGHENY TIGERS (13-7)
Hometown Softball Broadcast Recap for South Side on 5/7/14
It was senior day in Hookstown as the South Side Rams took on the Neshannock Lancers on Wednesday. With a win the Rams would have a share of the section title. With a loss it would be third place for South Side. Double-A has 15 teams and the top-seed will enjoy an opening round bye while Single-A is much like Quad-A with only 12 teams and four round one bye's.

Hometown Softball Broadcast Recap for Baldwin on 5/6/14
The Baldwin Highlanders clinched a playoff spot with a 4-0 win on Tuesday afternoon over AAAA, Section 4 opponent, Mt. Lebanon. The Highlanders came into the day in a 3-way tie for second place in the section. However, with the win, they remain in second place and have a guaranteed playoff spot with a section record of 10-4.
