CTK 2015 – Class A Black Hills Conference Preview

The Hills have been alive the past two years. In 2014 and 2013, the a team from the current Black Hills Conference has made it at least to the WPIAL championship game. It was Cardinal Wuerl North Catholic in 2013 (then in Class A's Eastern Conference) and Avonworth last year. North Catholic won the title in 2013 and also the PIAA title, while Avonworth lost to Clairton in last year’s WPIAL final. Will the championship-caliber play continue this year? Possibly. Clairton is everyone’s team to beat in Class A, but North Catholic and Avonworth are considered two of the best teams again. Brentwood also looks like it has the makings of a team that could challenge for the top of the conference. The South Side Rams were looking to put some breathing space between themselves and the Avonworth Antelopes for 2nd place in Class AA Section 1, and the only way they were going to make that happen was to beat the Lopes outright on its home turf, which they did 6-4 on Thursday.Scholastic Notebook – 04/17/2015

Life in Section 1 of WPIAL Class AAAA baseball is full of close calls. The WPIAL season is a little less than a month old and it’s remarkable how many close games there are in Section 1. Heading into Friday’s action, there have been 12 games played in the section. Two-thirds were decided by two runs or less and five had been decided by one run. The close games certainly reflect the balance of the section. But they also reflect the strength of the section. This should tell you the strength of Section 1: It includes four teams – Moon, North Allegheny, Pine-Richland and Seneca Valley – that have made 17 WPIAL championship appearances in either Class AAAA or AAA over the past 11 years. The other members of the section are North Hills and Butler.
Golden Bears Back on Top With WPIAL Class A Win

After a one year hiatus, the WPIAL Class A championship is coming back to Clairton. The Bears improved to 13-0 and won their sixth district title in the last seven years with a convincing 46-14 triumph over the Avonworth Antelopes Friday at Heinz Field in Pittsburgh. (Picture left: Ryan Williams launces one of his five touchdown passes) The first quarter of the WPIAL Class A finals started as a back-and-forth battle of heavyweights throwing haymakers. On the second play of their second possession, Lamont Wade scored on a 54-yard run. Including this below article and for the days ahead, there will be a lot of talk about the eight teams that will square off for a WPIAL football championship at Heinz Field to cap off the 2014 District 7 Playoffs. But eight teams that enjoyed OUTSTANDING seasons came up one victory short of taking the full ride on the Highway to Heinz all the way to the North Shore. Welcome to Week 12 of the high school football season. It has been a long journey down the Highway to Heinz this season. Approaching the last exit on the distinguished roadway, Chick’s Picks thought it would be an appropriate time for the entire MSA Sports crew to stop for a bite to eat. Leading the way, Chick’s Picks chose her favorite downtown restaurant. As the crew gathered in the lobby, the host approached—and was astonished when he saw who was in the party. “Why, Ms. Picks, it is an honor to host you and your friends in our establishment,” he said as he led the crew to their table. The Final off ramp on the Highway to Heinz is here and the WPIAL Football playoff Steering Committee is celebrating one of their finest moments ever. Each classification features seeds 1,2,3 and 5 still standing as we get set for semi-final Friday. The semi-finals feature the top three passers in the WPIAL and the top two rushers for the year are still alive as well. All the games are fantastic and so we at Big Game Hunting must make "Sophie's Choice" in each classification. We do not have any problem with that. Welcome to Week 7 of the high school football season. Part of being a successful high school football prognosticator is always knowing what your competition is up to. While studying season statistics of those very rivals, Chick’s Picks noticed a few thing that were rather bothersome. She decided to schedule a meeting with The Boss to air her frustrations. “Boss, I want to start off by saying that I really appreciate everything you’ve done for me over the last 15 years. But, this week, I noticed that my biggest rivals are spreading their wings, so to speak,” Chick’s Picks said. The Boss replied, without looking up from his classic hunt and peck typing technique, “Chick’s, what is it that you want now?”
