Shenango senior Brad Thornton claimed his first individual championship, firing a one-over par 73 to win the WPIAL Boys Division II Golf Championships at the New Castle Country Club on Monday afternoon. Saturday was one of the lightest days at the district high school football restaurant with only four WPIAL main courses to choose from with a pair of Pittsburgh City League non-conference sides. The Century Conference has always been one of the most competitive conferences from top to bottom in the WPIAL. Just three years ago, the conference crowned tri-champions in Sto-Rox, Seton-LaSalle and Keystone Oaks. There is little doubt that high school football is king on Friday nights in Western Pennsylvania. However it's not ALL about Friday nights. South Fayette enjoyed a breakout season in 2009. They went undefeated in the regular season and captured the Class AA Century Conference championship. However their season came to a bitter end in a wild shootout loss to Aliquippa in the WPIAL Quarterfinals. That nightmare finish in 2009 though led to a golden dream season in 2010.
