No matter what time of year it is at Western Beaver High School, it always seems to be Miller Time. Miller is a senior at Western Beaver. True, he may not be at the same athletic level as, say, New Castle’s Malik Hooker or Gateway’s Montae Nicholson, a pair of future Division I college players who shine in others sports. But as far as production goes in three sports, you’d be hard-pressed to find a WPIAL athlete who is better than Miller. Western Beaver was a .500 team in football, but Miller was their leading receiver for the second year in a row.

Scholastic Notebook – 12/09/2013

In 24 hours, basketball player Anthony Richards went from making nothing – to the New Castle record books. It was one of the oddest starts to a season you’ll see from a player, a Jekyll and Hyde thing for Richards, a 5-foot-7 senior guard at New Castle who has been a starter on two WPIAL championship teams. The season started Friday and Richards went scoreless in a victory against West Middlesex. It was hard to believe from one of the best shooters in the WPIAL. He also was 0 for 2 from the free-throw line. But the next night was a totally different story. Richards was “unconscious” from the field, making a school-record nine 3-pointers as New Castle crushed Perry, 88-34. Richards scored all of his 27 points on 3-pointers.

WPIAL Saturday’s Scholastic Starz for Week Eight

It was a clean sweep for the month of September weather wise as for the fourth straight Friday and the fifth overall, the weather was outstanding for high school football around Western Pennsylvania. The real winner on the fourth Saturday of the WPIAL football season was Mother Nature. For the first time in this 2013, she played a key role in the three games that were played Saturday afternoon with a steady, drenching rain. CTK 2013 – WPIAL Single-A Big 7 Conference Preview

Every team in Class A has been chasing the Clairton Bears and their 64 game winning streak for the last five seasons. Could this be the year that the Bears are dethroned? That is still to be determined but several of the candidates to try and knock off the Bears will come from the Big Seven Conference.Sto-Rox has played at Heinz Field the last two seasons and the conference had three teams of the top four seeds(thanks to the WPIAL creative seeding process) in last year’s playoffs. The Vikings, longtime conference power Rochester and Neshannock, all tied for the Big Seven championship last season. And the spotlight will shine bright on the Lancers and Vikings on September 12th for a Thursday night Root Sports matchup which can be heard live on MSA Sports.

The South Park baseball and Riverside softball teams did something unusual this week – win a WPIAL title with a perfect record.On Monday, both begin a quest to do something even more rare– win a PIAA title with a perfect record.Since the PIAA started softball and baseball championships in the 1970s, no WPIAL baseball team has won a PIAA title with an undefeated record. Elizabeth Forward came the closest, making the PIAA Semifinals in 2011.While no WPIAL baseball team has won a PIAA title with an undefeated record, three WPIAL softball teams have won PIAA titles with perfect records, but it has been 14  years since it happened.

NA, SP, Beav and WB All Claim 2013 WPIAL Baseball Gold

Four new champions were crowned as the District 7 baseball postseason came to an end. A little WPIAL history was made as South Park became the fifth school to win a baseball championship with an undefeated record. When all was said it done, the Eagles were the only top-seed to win a title while a pair of #2-seeds...North Allegheny in Quad-A and Beaver in Double-A won championships while the party crashers was Class A #5-seed Western Beaver. Western Beaver Truly Golden In WPIAL Class A Baseball
May 29, 2013
In an improbable finish to the Class A Baseball championship game, Western Beaver pitcher Nick Miller picked off Santino Platt off second base to end the game and give the Golden Beavers a 3-2 come from behind victory over the OLSH Chargers to claim their second WPIAL championship. Western Beaver scored two runs in the sixth inning to take the lead entering the final frame.The win for Western Beaver give the Golden Beavers their second WPIAL title, they claimed the gold in 2000. Miller picked up the win, going to 7-1 on the season.
