Last year, the girls basketball team from Greensburg Central Catholic made it to the WPIAL quarterfinals and PIAA semifinals.

The team is still stacked with talent, with the potential of making another deep playoff run.

Avery Davis, who figures to have a large role with the Centurions, is motivated as ever heading into her final season.

“The biggest motivation we have coming into this season is seeing how far we made it last year and coming up just short in the playoffs,” Davis said. “We were definitely capable of making it to the WPIAL championship and winning it, but one off game can change that in an instant.”

With all the success the team had last year, it should come as no surprise the goal Davis has her sights set on this season.

“Our biggest goal is to win the WPIAL championship this year,” Davis said. “We have a lot to do to prepare for that, and we are taking it game by game.”

Early results out of Greensburg Central Catholic have been positive: wins against Union and Altoona in the North Allegheny tip-off tournament Dec. 1-2.

“Winning our two first games gave us some confidence with the way we played,” Davis said. “We played two pretty good teams with talented rosters, so it was reassuring to see that we are capable of beating good teams like Union and Altoona.”

Along with Davis, GCC has another senior in Mya Morgan, and a sophomore with Division I offers in Erica Gribble, headlining a talented roster. Getting to share the court with her teammates is a treat for Davis.

“We are all capable of scoring the ball and doing good things on the court,” Davis said. “When one of us isn’t playing our best, we are right there to pick each other up.”

On top of basketball, she also participates in cross country and track.

Davis recently committed to Wheeling University to play basketball, and she plans to study physical therapy.

This week, Davis took some time for a Senior Spotlight Q&A:

How did you get started with basketball?

I got started with basketball in kindergarten. My parents had me involved in a lot of sports, but basketball was the one that I chose.

What does your leadership role look like this year?

Being a senior on this team definitely feeds into the leadership role. We are a young team, so it is important that everyone is on the same page when it comes to defense and running our plays. I see myself as being more of a leader this year in helping my teammates out in any way that I can.

How does running help with basketball?

I’ve been a runner since middle school, so I’ve been able to adapt from running season to basketball season. I’ve always done running to help keep me in shape for basketball, and I feel that it has definitely been a lot of help.

What was the recruitment process like?

For my recruitment process, I wasn’t in a rush to pick a school. I wanted to pick the best fit for me, which meant that the school was not too far away from home, it had a competitive basketball team with a good coaching staff, and it had a good program for my major. I fell in love with Wheeling’s campus and knew that it was the fit for me.

What is one thing that people may not know about you?

One thing that people may not know about me is that I have a French Bulldog, Theo.
