October 15, 2011Since the WPIAL formed Class AAAA football in 1980, only six running backs who played in Class AAAA rushed for more than 4,000 career yards.But two of them reached the milestone on the same night Friday.Mount Lebanon’s Luke Hagy and Pittsburgh Central Catholic’s Damion Jones-Moore had big games in victories Friday night and also pushed past 4,000 yards.

In fact, he didn’t even have to leave his house.

Former WPIAL and NBA Star Armon Gilliam Dies at Age 47
July 6, 2011Former Bethel Park High School University of Nevada-Las Vegas and NBA star Armon Gilliam collapsed while playing basketball in Bridgeville Tuesday night and passed away at the age of 47.

April 25, 2011The decision might come as a surprise to some because college interest was starting to pick up in Mason, who led the WPIAL in scoring last season at 33.3 points and scored 64 in one game. Butler University coach Brad Stevens came to watch Mason work out at Highlands last week and requested grade transcripts on Mason. No scholarship offer was made.

April 20, 2011The chase for the MSA Sports Cup is now two-third through the 2010-2011 high school sports season. The MSA Sports Cup is a challenge to determine the best sports program for the school year from the WPIAL in each classification. 2011 MSA SPORTS GIRLS ALL-NETTERS TEAM
March 30, 2011Two players from perennial power Mt. Lebanon and three sophomores highlight the 2011 MSA Sports All-Netters team. The team is made up of the top 10 players in the WPIAL and split into a first- and second-team. The squad was selected by the MSA Sports staff. 2011 MSA SPORTS BOYS ALL-NETTERS TEAMIt was a rare season in the WPIAL in terms of points. Three players averaged 30 points or more for the first time in at least 25 years. All three of those players are the MSA Sports Boys All-Netters team.
Mount Lebanon, Montour, Greensburg CC & Lincoln Park All Settle for Silver in PIAA Boys Basketball Playoffs
March 27, 2011There is plenty of silver to be found in Southwestern Pennsylvania following the state basketball championships at Penn State University. Mount Lebanon in AAAA, Montour in AAA, Greensburg Central Catholic in AA and Lincoln Park in A all lost in the state finals in Happy Valley, three of them fell to District 12 powers while Mount Lebanon lost to the District 1 champs.
Imhotep Charter Rolls to Boys Class AA State Title Win Over GCC
March 26, 2011Imohtep Charter won their second PIAA Class AA basketball champions and there was no double overtime this time as the Panthers smoked the Greensburg Central Catholic Centurions 67-34 on Saturday at the Bryce Jordan Center. 10 different players scored for the Panthers as they exploded in the second half to claim the gold.
Mount Lebanon Takes Chester To OT Before Falling in Boys AAAA ChampionshipIn a game that some so-called experts said would be a rout, went to overtime as Chester prevailed, winning their 7th PIAA championship with a 72-60 victory over Mount Lebanon in the Boys Quad-A title game on Saturday night at the Bryce Jordan Center.

Philly MCS Charter Too Mighty for Lincoln Park in PIAA Boys A FinalsThe Lincoln Park Leopards ran into a mighty buzz saw in the Philadelphia Math, Civics and Sciences Mighty Elephants on Friday afternoon in the PIAA Class A boys final at the Bryce Jordan Center, falling 70-55. The Elephants won their first ever PIAA title, led by Jeremiah Worthen as the super sophomore finished with 22 points.
Scoring Drought Costs Montour as Spartans Fall in Class AAA Boys Title GameFor the first two plus quarters, Montour hung right with the defending state champions, but a seven plus minute scoring drought cost the Spartans a chance for the Class AAA title, falling to Neumann-Goretti 55-45 on Friday night at the Bryce Jordan Center.
