High school roundup for Dec. 10, 2018: Aliquippa boys victorious again

Just two days after celebrating a PIAA football champion in Hershey, Eli Kosanovich and MJ Devonshire were filling the nets and leading Aliquippa to a victory on the basketball court.

Kosanovich had 18 points and Devonshire added 11 as the Class 3A No. 2 Quips defeated Blackhawk, 68-64, on Monday night.

Aliquippa (1-0) went on a 23-11 run in the second quarter.

Sam Fusetti had 17 points for the Cougars (0-3).

Hopewell 72, Ellwood City 67 — Jacob McGovern had 21 points, and Enzo Palumbo added 16 as Hopewell (2-1) won a nonsection contest. Steve Antuono scored 20 points, and Broc Boariu added 16 for Ellwood City (0-1).

Steel Valley 72, West Mifflin 66 — Connor Vehec had 26 points, and Andrew Hoie and Jordan Fisher each scored 14 to lead Steel Valley (1-2) to a nonsection victory. The Ironmen led 36-19 at halftime.

Washington 82, Belle Vernon 62 — Zahmere Robinson scored 22 points and Dan Ethridge added 19 to help Washington (1-0) earn a nonsection win. Mitch Poholt had 16 points for Belle Vernon (0-3).

Western Beaver 75, Beaver County Christian 35 — Noah Gray poured in 30 points to lead Western Beaver (2-1) to a nonsection victory.

Freeport 71, Apollo-Ridge 49 — Jalen Brown led a trio of Freeport players in double figures with 21 points as the Yellowjackets breezed past Apollo-Ridge in nonsection play. Nolan Plocki scored 11 points and Aiden Skradski added 10 points for Freeport (2-1). Klay Fitzroy scored a team-high 12 points for Apollo-Ridge (0-3). Jacob Fello scored 11, and Bobby Mangan added 10 points for the Vikings (0-3).

Kiski Area 45, Burrell 34 — Kyrell Hutcherson scored 10 points to lead Kiski Area to a nonsection win over Burrell. Ryne Wallace added nine points for the Cavaliers (1-2). Logan Bitar led all scorers with 13 points for Burrell (1-2). Logan Phillips also chipped in 10 points for the Bucs.

St. Joseph 66, Saltsburg 53 — Daniel Fábregas scored a game-high 24 points and Andrew Sullivan added 22 as St. Joseph (2-1) topped Saltsburg in a nonsection matchup. Dylian Palmer led Saltsburg (1-2) with 10 points.

Girls basketball

Frazier 69, California 42 — Brooke Poling scored 26 points to guide Class 2A No. 4 Frazier (1-2) to a nonsection win. Erin Sheehan had 22 points for California (1-2).

Keystone Oaks 64, Allderdice 53 — Gillian Piccolino scored 21 points and Jaylen Hoffmann added 18 as Class 4A No. 4 Keystone Oaks (2-1) won a nonsection matchup. Isa Bodgan added 15. Sophia North scored 23 for Allderdice (1-2).

Mars 77, Pine-Richland 39 — Bella Pelaia had 22 points and Tai Johnson and Ellie Coffield each had 19 as Class 5A No. 2 Mars (3-0) rolled to a nonsection win.

Mt. Lebanon 54, Altoona 33 — Ashley Connor scored 20 points, and Jamey Napoleon added 16 to lift Class 6A No. 5 Mt. Lebanon (1-2) to a nonsection win.

South Park 42, Armstrong 30 — Cassidy Zandier’s 18 points lifted Class 3A No. 3 South Park (1-2) to a nonsection win.

Upper St. Clair 74, Seton LaSalle 32 — Sarah Price and Cassie Kartsonas each had 18 points for Upper St. Clair (2-1) in a nonsection victory.

West Greene 68, McGuffey 32 — Kaitlyn Rizor had 17 points, and McKenna Lampe scored 16 as Class A No. 1 West Greene (2-1) rolled to a nonsection win.

Jeannette 59, Carrick 37 — Dymond Crawford scored 30 points, and Asia Mack added 21 to carry Jeannette to a nonsection victory over Carrick (1-1).

Crawford hit four 3-pointers and had 10 rebounds, three blocks and four steals for Jeannette (1-2).

Apollo-Ridge 39, Derry 30 — Liz Penrose led all scorers with 15 points as Apollo-Ridge won a nonsection game. Maddy Moore followed up with 13 points for Apollo-Ridge (3-0). Kam Kelly and Destiny Roberts scored seven points each for Derry (0-1).

Canon-McMillan 59, Hempfield 51 — Tamara Mathis scored 24 points as Canon-McMillan (2-1, 1-0) topped Hempfield in the Section 2-6A opener. Sarah Liberatore had 13 points, and Riley Sullebarger added 12 for the Spartans (2-1, 0-1).

Fort Cherry 41, Monessen 37 — Abby Cooper had 19 points as Fort Cherry (2-1) won a nonsection game. Qitarah Hardison scored 19 points for Monessen (0-3), which led 11-5 in the first quarter. Fort Cherry closed the game on a 25-15 run.

Southmoreland 60, Uniontown 23 — Bailey Kuhns had 16 points and 15 rebounds, and Maggie Moore added 17 points as Southmoreland (3-0) cruised to a nonsection win. The Scotties led 20-12 at halftime and used an 18-4 run to take control in the third quarter.

Waynesburg 35, Yough 31 — C.P. Miller had 17 points as Waynesburg (2-1) won in nonsection play. Jordan Pater had 13 points to lead Yough (0-3).

Knoch 51, Kiski Area 41 Knoch built a 19-point lead through three quarters and held off a Kiski Area comeback attempt in the fourth quarter, posting a nonsection victory.

Nevaeh Ewing, a St. Joseph transfer, scored 20 points for Knoch (2-1).

Hannah Potter had a game-high 22 for Kiski Area (1-2), which outscored Knoch, 23-4, in the final quarter but couldn’t complete the rally.

Leechburg 55, Geibel 36 — Kat Yurjevich scored a game-high 22 points as Leechburg dominated the second half to defeat Geibel in nonsection play. Aubry Skeel added 10 points for Leechburg (2-1), which outscored Geibel, 34-19, after halftime. Gianna Kolencik scored 11 points and Hannah Geary scored 10 points for Geibel (0-3).

Sto-Rox 60, Valley 38 — Valley trailed 29-24 at halftime but the Sto-Rox (2-1) defense was too much to overcome in the second half in a nonsection matchup. Adriona Lyons led Valley (1-2) with 13 points.

East Allegheny 52, Riverview 41 — The Raiders led 25-17 at halftime but were outscored 35-16 the rest of the way as Class 3A No. 5 East Allegheny rallied past Riverview in a nonsection matchup. Sydney McDonough led Riverview (0-3) with 11 points, while Amaia Johnson led East Allegheny (3-0) with 20.

North Allegheny 57, Fox Chapel 41 — Lizzy Groetsch scored 16 points as Class 6A No. 1 North Allegheny pulled away from Fox Chapel with a 21-point fourth quarter on their way to a Section 1-6A win. Claire Fenton had a game-high 19 points for Fox Chapel (2-1, 0-1). Rachel Martindale scored 12 points and Brynn Serbin added 11 points for North Allegheny (3-0, 1-0).
