High school roundup for Dec. 18, 2023: Plum girls go to 6-0 with win over Franklin Regional

Megan Marston put up 24 points as Plum stayed undefeated with a 58-42 victory over Franklin Regional in Section 1-5A girls basketball Monday night.

Riley Stephans added 18 for the Mustangs (6-0, 2-0). Madi DeRiggi scored 11 points and Toryn Fulton chipped in with 10 for the Panthers (1-5, 1-1).

Aquinas Academy 66, St. Joseph 62 (OT) – Ellie Junker made four 3-pointers and finished with 17 points as Aquinas Academy (7-1) edged St. Joseph (5-2) in nonsection play. Emily Fisher scored 13 points, Victoria Taylor added 12 and Tess Duer followed with 11 for Aquinas Academy. Julie Spinelli sank five 3-pointers and had 36 points while Emma Swierczewski added 10 for the Spartans.

Belle Vernon 42, Ringgold 35 – Kenzi Seliga scored 15 points and Saylor Lee chipped in 10 to power Belle Vernon (4-3, 1-1) to a Section 3-4A victory. Kamryn Webb scored 11 for Ringgold (1-5, 0-2).

Burrell 55, Obama Academy 41 – Jules Fisher scored 20 points to lead Burrell (5-0) to a nonsection victory. Casey Brancato added 16 points and Anna Clark had 13 for the Bucs. Gionna Simmons led Obama Academy (1-3) with 20 points. Taylor Phillips had 17.

California 53, Carmichaels 36 – Hayley Gibson dropped 21 points and Rakiyah Porter finished with 13 as California (3-4, 1-1) beat Carmichaels (1-5, 0-1) in Section 4-2A. Megan Voithofer scored 15 points and Ali Jacobs added 13 for the Mighty Mikes.

Central Valley 43, Riverside 40 – Dominique Douglas hit four 3-pointers and scored 17 points and Nyah Hayes added 14 points to lead Central Valley (3-2) to a nonsection victory. Camryn Friello had 12 points and Delena Fox added eight points and eight rebounds for Riverside (3-3).

Charleroi 59, Jefferson-Morgan 30 – Riley Jones led all scorers with 23 points as Charleroi (4-1) defeated Jefferson-Morgan (2-5) in a nonsection contest. Bella Carroto and Ella Sypolt each scored 10 points for the Cougars.

Chartiers-Houston 46, Beth-Center 41 – Ava Capozzoli buried five 3-pointers and scored 21 points to lead Chartiers-Houston (4-2, 2-0) to a Section 4-2A win. Violet Trump and Emma Shashura scored 10 points apiece for Beth-Center (3-4, 1-1).

Chartiers Valley 62, Canon-McMillan 22 – Iyla Ozbey produced 14 points, Rachel Boehm followed with 13 and Emma Reynolds scored 10 to lead Chartiers Valley (5-1, 1-0) to a Section 2-6A win over Canon-McMillan (5-2, 1-1).

Clairton 57, Ellis School 26 – Iyanna Wade scored 34 points to lead all scorers as Clairton (6-0, 1-0) defeated Ellis School (3-5, 0-2) in Section 3-2A play. Keira Brown had 12 points for the Bears. Taelor Spencer scored 11 points for Ellis School.

Deer Lakes 39, Leechburg 13 – Sophia Laurenza scored 19 points for Deer Lakes (3-4) in a nonsection victory over Leechburg (4-2). Olivia Vigna scored five points for the Blue Devils.

Derry 51, Valley 6 – Jane Huss led all scorers with 21 points and Haylee Myers and Rain Loucks each scored 13 as Derry (3-4, 1-1) ran away with a Section 1-4A win over Valley (0-8, 0-2).

Ellwood City 69, New Brighton 15 – Kayla Jones had 23 points as Ellwood City (5-1) defeated New Brighton (0-7) in a nonsection contest. Caitlin Kreitzer scored 15 points for Ellwood City.

Fox Chapel 64, New Castle 33 – Bella Urso scored 20 points to lead Fox Chapel (3-4, 1-1) to a Section 2-5A win. Natalia Schaffer added 15 points and Lyla Jablon had 10 for the Foxes. Reagan Hudson led New Castle (0-8, 0-2) with 11.

Frazier 57, Bentworth 54 – Allie Yauch and Chloe Harger scored 17 points apiece to help Frazier (4-4, 1-1) to a Section 4-2A win. Amber Sallee scored 23 for Bentworth (1-6, 0-2).

Freedom 58, Shenango 40 – Shaye Bailey led all scorers with 32 points to propel Freedom (3-3, 2-0) to a Section 1-2A win. Amara DeFrank scored 19 points and Ella Ferrell added 11 for Shenango (1-4, 0-2).

Highlands 38, Knoch 24 – Kalleigh Nerone scored 13 points and Kate Myers and Jocelyn Bielak each added 11 to help Highlands (4-2, 1-1) to a Section 1-4A win. Karlee Buterbaugh led Knoch (2-4, 0-1) with 10 points.

Jeannette 38, Carlynton 24 – Navarah Smith scored 11 points to boost Jeannette (2-2) over Carlynton (3-4) in nonsection play.

Mars 54, Hampton 40 – Cecilia Christy put up 16 points and Vita Vargo followed with 14 as Mars (5-2, 1-0) defeated Hampton (2-5,1-1) in a Section 2-5A matchup.

McKeesport 71, Latrobe 45 – Rachael Manfredo scored 20 points and Kaylee Charles followed with 15 for McKeesport (5-0, 1-0) in a Section 3-5A win against Latrobe (2-4, 0-2). Elle Snyder put up 12 points, Carley Berk added 11 and Emmy Bridge finished with 10 for the Wildcats.

Mt. Lebanon 61, Bethel Park 56 – Payton Collins led the Blue Devils (3-3, 1-1) with 28 points and made five 3-pointers in a Section 2-6A victory. Becky Gillenberger and Sadie Orie each scored 15 points for Bethel Park (2-5, 0-2).

North Catholic 75, Freeport 35 – Ava Walker scored 17 points to lead four North Catholic (3-2, 2-0) players in double figures in a Section 1-4A win. Alayna Rocco added 12, Brady Wehner 11 and Emma Shoemaker 10. Brooke Kmetz led Freeport (2-5, 1-1) with 10 points.

North Hills 73, Armstrong 69 (OT) – Gia Minton scored 17 points, Olivia Waters and Gianna Sturdivant each had 16 points, Jayden Arnett added 12 and Delaney Amato followed with 11 as North Hills (5-3, 2-0) beat Armstrong (3-3, 0-2) in Section 2-5A. Emma Paul put up 23 points, Sara Weaver had 18 points, Sophia DeGregorio chipped in 11 and Kyla Fizgerald finished with 10 for the River Hawks.

Norwin 48, Upper St. Clair 24 – Lauren Palangio put up 15 points and Ava Kobus added 11 as Norwin (6-1) doubled up Upper St. Clair (4-3) in nonsection play. Grace Howell scored nine points to lead the Panthers.

Penn-Trafford 49, Albert Gallatin 24 – Olivia Pepple dropped 23 points while Lauren Marton added 10 points and 10 rebounds for Penn-Trafford (6-1, 2-0) in a Section 3-5A win. Mya Glisan led Albert Gallatin (1-5, 0-2) with 11 points. Kamryn Pieper also pulled in 10 rebounds for the Warriors.

Peters Township 65, Baldwin 39 – Gemma Walker put up 23 points, Natalie Wetzel added 18 and Daniela Radulovich finished with 10 as Peters Township (6-0, 2-0) defeated Baldwin (2-3, 0-2) in Section 2-6A. Katie Lucarelli had 13 points for the Highlanders.

Riverview 39, Apollo-Ridge 21 – Katerina Tsambis scored 16 points to pace Riverview (4-1) in a nonsection win. Sophie Yard produced 10 points for Apollo-Ridge (3-4).

Rochester 65, Sewickley Academy 28 – Kamryn Newman scored 17 points and Tia Yellock added 10 to help Rochester (4-2, 2-0) to a Section 1-2A victory. Libby Eannarino scored 15 for Sewickley Academy (3-2, 0-1).

Serra Catholic 75, Springdale 15 – Cate Clarke scored 21 points, Brianna Battles added 16, Abby Genes followed with 14 and Nikki Sfanos chipped in 12 to lead Serra Catholic (6-1, 2-0) to a Section 3-2A win over Springdale (1-5, 0-1).

Seton LaSalle 54, Montour 46 – Mallory Daly put up 23 points, Addie Lonegran made five 3-pointers and finished with 19 points, and Tiara Curry scored 10 points for Seton LaSalle (4-2) in a nonsection win. Jordyn Wolfe had 16 points for Montour (4-3).

Shaler 43, Butler 42 – Bayleigh Perez scored a game-high 15 points, including the game-winning 3-pointer with eight seconds remaining, to lead Shaler (3-4) to victory over Butler (2-4) in nonsection play. Malina McElroy and Cameryn Booher scored nine points each for Butler, which rallied from 11 points down at halftime.

South Park 49, Burgettstown 26 – Ella Clifford scored 13 points and Nika Contakos made four 3-pointers for her 12 points as South Park (4-0) defeated Burgettstown (4-3) in nonsection play. Kaitlyn Nease led the Blue Devils with 13 points.

Sto-Rox 54, Propel Braddock Hills 26 – Maddy Trembulak scored 16 points to lead four players in double figures for Sto-Rox (3-4) in a nonsection win. Arianna Johnston and Diara Parris each scored 11 and Kamiyah Thompson added 10. Kayla Knight led Propel Braddock Hills (1-5) with 13 points.

Thomas Jefferson 58, West Mifflin 28 – Riley McCabe led Thomas Jefferson (3-3) in scoring with 21 points as the Jaguars defeated West Mifflin (3-4) in nonsection competition. Savaughn Wimbs led all West Mifflin players with 20 points.

Union 52, Mohawk 27 – Kylie Fruehstorfer scored 20 points and Kelly Cleaver added 15 for Union (4-3) in a nonsection win. Erynne Capalbo scored 16 points and Chloe Fadden added 12 for Mohawk (5-2).

Winchester Thurston 53, Eden Christian 46 – Jasmine Hollins sank five 3-pointers and finished with 23 points and DaShae Cochran had 12 points to lead Winchester Thurston (3-2) past Eden Christian (4-4) in a nonsection matchup. Hope Haring, Emmie Smith and Ella Dippolito had 10 points apiece for the Warriors.

Boys basketball

Carrick 55, Winchester Thurston 37 – Brayden Fisher produced 17 points while Maurice Davis and Kelenn Ward each scored 10 points as Carrick (1-4) defeated Winchester Thurston (4-2) in nonsection play. Anthony Pipkin had 15 points for the Bears.

Chartiers-Houston 80, Beth-Center 64 – Avery Molek put up 30 points, Justus Buckingham added 18 and Nate Gregory chipped in 12 to lead Chartiers-Houston (5-1, 1-1) to a Section 4-2A win. Jason Zellie scored 16 points, Santino Revi and Brody Tharp each had 14 and Jonah Sussan added 11 for Beth-Center (1-5, 0-1).

Neighborhood Academy 74, Clairton 65 – Courtney Wallace went off for 32 points, Kedron Gilmore followed with 22 and drained five 3-pointers and Shamar Simpson added 16 as Neighborhood Academy (5-1) defeated Clairton (3-4) in a nonsection contest. DaShawn Hines scored 22 points to lead the Bears.

Penn Hills 57, Penn-Trafford 55 – Khalil Wall made the winning shot with two seconds left and finished with 23 points to lead Penn Hills (3-1) past Penn-Trafford (4-3) in nonsection play. Lamire Redman had 16 points while Darien Roberson added 14 for Penn Hills. Tyler Freas scored 15 points and Carmen Metcalf and Zach Feldman each had 12 points for Penn-Trafford.

Perry Traditional Academy 54, Propel Andrew Street 53 – Terry Whittle sank a jumper with 18 seconds left to give Perry (1-6) its first lead of the night and first win of the season in a nonsection victory over Propel Andrew Street (2-4). Whittle finished with 13 points, Jordan Roldan scored 17 points, and Javon Diamond produced 10 for Perry. Darryl McCullough had 12 points to pace Propel Andrew Street.

Springdale 82, California 45 – Jackson Pribanic had a game-high 20 points, John Hughes scored 17 and Chase Weihrauch chipped in 10 as Springdale (5-1) rolled to a nonsection win. Darius Johnson and Caden Monticelli each scored eight points for California (0-5).

Thomas Jefferson 62, Norwin 33 – Evan Berger put up 24 points to pace Thomas Jefferson (5-2) in a nonsection win over Norwin (3-3). Alexander Graney and Luke Denny each scored six points for the Knights.

West Greene 78, Hundred (W.Va.) 37 – Lane Allison dropped a game-high 30 points and Matt Wassil produced a double-double (17 points, 13 rebounds) in a lopsided West Greene (3-2) nonsection win. Colton Sandy scored 18 points and Trey Higgins added 11 for Hundred.

Avonworth 8, Wheeling Catholic 3 – Austin Gatti and Connor Ralston each racked up three goals and three assists to lead Avonworth (10-2) to a Class A win. Austin Dzadovsky added a goal and an assist and Jack Dolan and Jake Seifath each had two assists. Aden Cooey, Gary Hatfield and Zach Vitlip scored for Wheeling Catholic (4-5-1).

Butler 8, McDowell 2 – Carter Blystone, Owen Denny, Jack Johnson, Ronald Kuczynski, Anthony Trombatt, Mason Huey, Jaxon Salata and Brayden Hardsock scored as Butler (5-8) cruised to a Class A win. Ty Turer and Jacob Baniewicz each scored a goal for McDowell (3-7-1).

Carrick 6, Wilmington 2 – Ivan Manculich had a hat trick and added an assist, Tanner Heidkamp collected two goals and two assists, and Drew Bird also scored in a Varsity D2 win for Carrick (8-3). Andrew Cartwright scored twice for Wilmington (2-9).

Fox Chapel 7, North Hills 2 – Dom Casile had a hat trick and added an assist to lead Fox Chapel (7-5) to a Class 2A win. Tucker Cullen had a goal and four assists and Nate Sarra and Killian Kissane each added a goal and an assist. Jack Dulski and Ameer Cooper scored for North Hills (0-12).

Franklin Regional 6, Armstrong 3 – Max Rutkowski scored a hat trick while Derek German, Jackson Falkner and Max Williams each found the back of the net for Franklin Regional (6-3-2) in a Class 2A win. Jake Graff scored twice and Jason Rullo added a goal for Armstrong (3-8).

Hampton 4, Plum 3 – Sean Sullivan scored the overtime winner to lead Hampton (3-9) to a Class A victory. Joey Stephenson had a goal and two assists and Daniel Leyes and Scott Cameron also scored for Hampton. Luca Lapiana had a goal and an assist for Plum (5-5-1). Anthony Smith and Mason Wilkes also scored.

Mars 7, Montour 3 – Luke Olshenske and Ethan Lipchin each had two goals and an assist and Grant Weaver added a goal and an assist for Mars (8-4) in Class A. Ben Olshenske and Declan Abbey also scored. Jonah Camardese Woodruff, Hunter Fiedler and Braden Kulas scored for Montour (3-10).

Neshannock 9, Knoch 1 – Neshannock (9-2) rolled to a Varsity D2 win behind goals from Brian McConahy, Marcello Cerasi, Micah DeJulia, Giovanni Valentine, Kent Jones, Sam Mezzanotte, Jacob Gruber, Sebastian Renick and Nick Bucci. Knoch (3-8) got a goal from Nick Olshanski.

Seneca Valley 2, Upper St. Clair 1 (SO) – Seneca Valley (9-3) beat Upper St. Clair (7-2-1) in a shootout in a matchup of Class 3A teams. Jacob Gilbert scored in regulation for the Raiders and Eli Rankin had a second period goal for the Panthers.

South Fayette 6, Norwin 2 – Nathaniel Keller scored twice while Robert Chiapetta, Hudson Vennum, Tyler Brandedura and Nolan Murphy each buried a goal as South Fayette (8-1-1) defeated Norwin (7-4-2) in Class 2A. Colin Czekaj and Alex Thomas scored for the Knights.
