High school roundup for Dec. 21, 2018: Milestones highlight Central Catholic’s win over North Hills

It was a milestone night for the Central Catholic boys basketball team Friday.

Maurice Shipman had a career-high 30 points, including a school-record eight 3-pointers as the Vikings defeated North Hills, 77-64, in a Section 1-6A game.

The win gave Central Catholic coach Chuck Crummie his 650th career victory.

Ben Sarson added 14 points for Central Catholic (2-3, 1-0).

Jordan Albright scored 24 points for North Hills (3-3, 0-1).

Pine-Richland 81, Seneca Valley 57 — Dan Petcash had 22 points, and Greg Shulkosky added 19 as No. 4 Pine-Richland (5-2, 1-0) earned a Section 1-6A win.

Mt. Lebanon 72, Baldwin 43 — Jake Hoffman had 22 points to guide No. 5 Mt. Lebanon (5-1, 1-0) to a Section 2-6A win.

McKeesport 81, Albert Gallatin 49 — Christian Moore’s 24 points guided No. 5 McKeesport (4-2, 3-0) to a Section 1-5A win.

Chartiers Valley 80, Thomas Jefferson 60 – Jared Goldstrom had 26 points, and Joe Pipilo added 24 points as Chartiers Valley (4-1, 3-0) won in Section 2-5A.

Trinity 63, West Mifflin 54 — Michael Koroly had 24 points as Trinity (2-4, 2-1) picked up a Section 2-5A victory.

Shaler 77, Indiana 50 — BB Fugh scored 14 points, and Justin DeSabato and Mekhi Reynolds each had 12 points as Shaler (6-1, 2-0) won in Section 3-5A.

Blackhawk 68, Hopewell 41 — Sammy Fusetti had 15 points to lead Blackhawk (2-5, 1-2) to a Section 2-4A victory.

Quaker Valley 68, Central Valley 43 — Led by Ryan Stowers’ 26 points, No. 1 Quaker Valley (6-0, 2-0) rolled to a Section 2-4A win.

Charleroi 60, Frazier 57 — In Section 4-3A, Legend Davis had 20 points, and Joe Caruso added 16 as Charleroi (4-3, 2-1) picked up a win.

Avonworth 51, Carlynton 49 — Adam McKinney had 20 points to help Avonworth (4-1, 1-1) win in section 2-3A.

OLSH 74, Burgettstown 40 — Jake DiMichele had 15 points to lead No. 2 OLSH (6-0, 3-0) to a Section 3-2A win.

South Side Beaver 56, Mohawk 51 — Logan English had 15 points to help South Side Beaver (4-2, 2-1) pick up a Section 3-2A win. The Rams rallied to pull ahead with a 26-12 run in the second quarter.

Jeannette 77, Bentworth 34 — AJ Sharp guard made eight 3-pointers and had 30 points to help No. 3 Jeannette win a Section 2-2A game.

Marcus Barnes added 12 for the Jayhawks (4-2, 2-0).

Woodland Hills 57, Greensburg Salem 51 — Keandre Bowles had 26 points to help Woodland Hills (5-1, 3-0) earn a Section 1-5A victory. Dante Parsons had 14 points, Jack Oberdorf had 12, and Ryan Thomas scored 11 for Greensburg Salem (3-4, 0-3).

Knoch 49, Mt. Pleasant 30 — Ryan Lang scored a game-high 14 points to help Knoch (4-3, 1-0) score a Section 1-4A win at Mt. Pleasant (1-6, 0-1). Scott Fraser had 10 points for the Knights. Jacob Johnson had 10 points for the Vikings.

Waynesburg 77, Belle Vernon 72 — Lucas Garber had 29 points, 10 rebounds and five assists to carry Waynesburg (4-2, 1-0) to a Section 3-4A win. Larry Callaway scored 18 points to lead Belle Vernon (1-6, 0-1).

McGuffey 62, Southmoreland 53 — CJ Cole had 23 points and 20 rebounds to help McGuffey (5-2, 3-0) earn a Section 4-3A win. Riley Comforti scored 18 points to lead Southmoreland (3-4, 1-1).

Monessen 65, Bishop Canevin 44 — Devin Whitlock had 18 points to lead Monessen (3-3, 2-0) to a win in Section 2-A. Dishon Howell and Darnel Howell scored 12 points each, and Dawayne Howell added 10.

Greensburg CC 77, Trinity Christian 27 – Joel LoNigro had 20 points to help Greensburg Central Catholic (4-2, 2-1) roll to a Section 3-A win. Geoff Helm had 14 points, and Jacob Biros added 13 in the victory.

Penn-Trafford 60, Barringer, N.J. 59 — Zach Rocco had 17 points, nine assists and six rebounds to help Penn-Trafford (5-1) earn a victory at the Kreul Classic in Florida.

Ligonier Valley 76, Homer-Center 23 — Marrek Paola had 25 points and 20 rebounds, and Michael Marinchak added 21 points and six steals to lead Ligonier Valley (7-1, 4-0) to a District 6 Heritage Conference win.

Springdale 59, Winchester Thurston 57 — Isaac Kern buried the game winner at the buzzer and Mike Zolnierczyk scored a game-high 26 points as Springdale picked up the narrow win over Class 2A No. 5 Winchester Thurston in a Section 1 matchup. Demitri Fritch finished with 13 points and Ben Myford added 11 for Springdale (5-2, 2-1). Winchester Thurston (5-2, 2-1) was led by Langston Moses’ 16 points.

Burrell 46, East Allegheny 44 (OT) — Seth Fischbach drove the paint and finished a layup with seven seconds remaining in overtime to propel Burrell (3-5, 2-1) to a Section 3-3A win. Fischbach had a game-high 18 points. East Allegheny (1-5, 0-2) jumped out to a 14-2 lead, but Burrell chipped away at the lead and got it down to five points at halftime. The Bucs outscored East Allegheny, 20-15, in the second half to get the game to overtime. Logan Bitar finished with 17 points for the Bucs. Mike Smith had 11 points for East Allegheny and Rocco Bey scored 10.

St. Joseph 57, Clairton 55 — Andrew Sullivan scored on a layup late and Daniel Fábregas added a foul shot down the stretch as St. Joseph picked up a bounce-back win over Section 3-A rival Clairton. Sullivan finished with a game-high 21 points, Matt Arvay added 12 and Grant Bendis chipped in with 10 for St. Joseph (6-2, 3-0). Brendan Parsons led Clairton (1-2, 1-1) with 11 points.

Freeport 65, Derry 59 — Garret Schaffhauser and Vinnie Clark scored 17 points apiece to lead Freeport (4-2, 1-0) to a Section 1-4A win. Jalen Brown added 15 points for the Yellowjackets. John Kerr had a game-high 22 points for Derry (4-2, 0-1) and Tanner Nicely scored 16.

Apollo-Ridge 54, Northgate 38 — Klay Fitzroy led three Apollo-Ridge players in double figures with 16 points in a Section 1-2A win. Keighton Reese had 14 points for the Vikings (3-5, 2-1), who won their third straight game, and Jake Fello scored 11. Malcolm Randall had 12 points for Northgate (1-6, 0-3).

Riverview 57, Propel Braddock Hills 38 — Noah Black scored 22 points to lead Riverview (4-1, 2-1) to a Section 1-2A win. Nate Black scored 13 points for the Raiders, which held Propel Braddock Hills to single-digit point totals in three of the four quarters. Chaiem Despert-Johnson had 22 points for Propel Braddock Hills (0-6, 0-3).

Leechburg 83, Curwensville 45 — The Blue Devils broke the game open with a 29-point second quarter and sophomore Dylan Cook put up a career-high 30 points to help lead Leechburg past District 9 foe Curwensville. Jake Blumer finished with 20 points and John Miskinis added 10 for Leechburg (5-2).

Hampton 56, Plum 49 — The Mustangs jumped out to a 19-9 first-quarter lead but cooled off the rest of the way in a Section 3-5A loss to Hampton. Lamar Whiting scored a game-high 18 points and Connor Moss chipped in with 15 for Plum (1-6, 1-2). Ben Ringeisen led Hampton (4-2, 2-1) with 17 points.

Portersville Christian 63, Cheswick Christian Academy 31 — Andrew Drake had seven points for Cheswick Christian Academy (1-6) in a loss at Portersville Christian. Elijah White led Portersville Christian with 14 points.

Girls basketball

Moon 49, West Allegheny 43 — Reilly Sunday scored 22 points to lift Moon (4-2, 2-1) to a Section 1-5A win.

North Allegheny 46, Prestonwood Christian (Texas) 40 — Lizzy Groetsch had 17 points and Rachel Martindale added 14 as Class 6A No. 1 North Allegheny (7-0) won at the KSA Disney Classic.

Oakland Catholic 47, West Plains (Mo.) 38 — Jayde Boyd tallied 17 points as Class 5A No. 3 Oakland Catholic (6-1) won at the KSA Disney Classic in Orlando.

Thomas Jefferson 67, Keystone Oaks 58 — Jenna Clark had 29 points to guide Thomas Jefferson (6-1) to a nonsection win. Gillian Piccolino scored 22, and Jaylen Hoffmann added 19 for Keystone Oaks (5-3).

Penn Hills 60, Latrobe 48 — Adia Brisker had 19 points to lead No. 5 Penn Hills (5-2, 3-0) to a Section 3-5A victory. Carly Augustine scored 12 points to lead Latrobe (3-2, 1-2).

Belle Vernon 43, Mt. Pleasant 23 — Rachel Wobrak had 15 points, and Lindsay Steeber added 12 as Belle Vernon (3-3, 3-0) won in Section 3-4A. Tara Tuccarello and Juliann Kalp had six points each for Mt. Pleasant (2-5, 1-2).

Greensburg CC 53, Propel Andrew Street 10 — Melinda Maietta had 14 points as No. 3 Greensburg Central Catholic (5-0, 1-0) won in Section 3-A.

Wrestling

Stone Joseph came up with the biggest win of his young career Friday.

Kiski Area’s freshman heavyweight pulled off a 3-1 decision over Canon-McMillan’s Giomar Ramos in the final bout of the night, giving Class AAA No. 1 Cavaliers a 39-33 victory over the No. 2 Big Macs in the WPIAL Wrestling Showcase at Canon-McMillan.

Joseph scored a takedown in the first period and added an escape in the third as Kiski Area (4-0) held on for a victory in a rematch of the past two WPIAL Class AAA championship matches. Sammy Starr, Enzo Morlacci, Cam Connor, Jack Blumer and Nick Delp won by fall, while Dom Giordano and Darren Miller recorded decisions.

Jacob Gardner, Tyler Rohaley, Gerrit Nijenhuis and Evan Miller got pins for Canon-McMillan, while Costa Moore won by decision.

Kiski Area began the night with a 39-32 win over No. 4 Seneca Valley. Connor, Blumer, Brayden Roscosky, Troy Kuhn and Joseph won by fall and Miller by decision, while Seneca Valley got a pin from Chanz Shearer, a technical fall by Dylan Chappell and decisions from Drew Vlasnik, Antonio Amelio and Conor Hayes.
