High school roundup for Feb. 15, 2024: Union prevails in Hillel Academy’s 1st WPIAL playoff game

Lucas Stanley scored 23 points and No. 5 Union pulled away in the second half to secure a 67-43 victory over Hillel Academy in the WPIAL Class A first round Thursday night.

It was the first WPIAL playoff game for Hillel Academy (7-10), a small Orthodox Jewish school in Squirrel Hill.

The Scotties (13-10) led by 10 at halftime, but outscored the Heat 25-6 in the third quarter. Braylon Thomas scored 18 and Dayne Johnke had 11 for Union. Yonah Iskowitz paced Hillel Academy with 17 points and Noam Azagury and Yoni Kanal scored 13 apiece.

Union will face the winner of Friday’s furst-round game between No. 4 Monessen and No. 13 Summit Academy in Wednesday’s quarterfinals.

Hockey

Avonworth 4, Freeport 2 – Cooper Powell had a goal and an assist and Jack Dolan, Jake Seifarth and Aidan O’Dell also scored for Avonworth (15-3-1) in a Class A win. Landen Kozma and Zach Bowser scored for Freeport (5-10-5).

Carrick 4, Connellsville 0 – Logan Keady made 24 saves to record a shutout for Carrick (11-4-2) in a Varsity D2 win over Connellsville (7-9-1). Drew Bird factored in on every goal, scoring once and recording three assists. Jack Small, Ivan Manculich and Max Hagan added a goal each.

Chartiers Valley 6, Blackhawk 1 – Chris DeAngelis had a hat trick, Noah Callender added two goals and two assists, Brady Nairn had a goal and an assist, and Tyler Held dished out three assists for Chartiers Valley (18-0) in a Class A win. Owen Keister scored for Blackhawk (15-3-1).

Indiana 3, Meadville 2 (OT) – Phil Bell scored the overtime winner, Ash Lockard and Landin Wilson each had a goal and an assist, and Luke Rowe made 33 saves for Indiana (15-2-2) in a Class A win. Preston Phillis scored twice for Meadville (10-5-3).

Mt. Lebanon 4, Central Catholic 3 (SO) – Brayden Wertz scored two goals, Jacob Lehman also scored, Sawyer Klasnick dished out a pair of assists, and Quinn Lynam made 32 saves to lead Mt. Lebanon (10-7-1) to a shootout win in Class 3A. Evan Benscoter had a goal and an assist and Ben Balla made 38 saves for Central Catholic (9-8-1).

Peters Township 4, Bethel Park 2 – Charlie Caputo and John Ripepi scored third-period goals, Camden Martin had a goal and two assists, and Drew Alexander also scored for Peters Township (12-4-2) in Class 3A. Kylan Bedner and Anthony Karner scored for Bethel Park (9-7-1).

Ringgold 7, Elizabeth Forward 2 – Caden Doran had a pair of goals and an assist and Phil Quattrone scored a goal and recorded three assists for Ringgold (11-5-2) in a Vaarsity D2 win. Bruce Santina and Nolan Pasco added a goal and an assist apiece for the Rams. Joey Wach and Doug Hoffman scored for Elizabeth Forward (9-7).

Shaler 6, Quaker Valley 5 – Jacob Kunc scored four goals, Thomas Sommer and Blacke Whiteman also scored, and Shane Ciganik made 35 saves for Shaler (14-3-2) in a Class A victory. Coleman Carry scored twice and Max Modrovich had a goal and two assists for Quaker Valley (16-2-1).

South Fayette 13, Bishop McCort 1 – Nolan Murphy had a hat trick and two assists as South Fayette (15-1-2) cruised past Bishop McCort (6-13-1) in Class 2A. Trevor Dalessandro netted a pair of goals and had three assists for the Lions and Robert Chiappetta contributed a pair goal and assists.

Thomas Jefferson 7, Fox Chapel 5 – Nick Best and Scott Allen each had two goals and two assists and Derek Schliebner and Andrew Oliver had a goal and an assist apiece to power Thomas Jefferson (17-2) in Class 2A. Dom Casile scored four goals and Tucker Cullen added a goal and an assist for Fox Chapel (9-8-1).

Upper St. Clair 3, Baldwin 1 – Eli Rankin had a goal and an assist, Grahm Tauch and Nico Galardini also scored, and Drew Lisak handed out two assists to lead Upper St. Clair (10-5-3) to a Class 3A win. Gabe Herrle scored and Austin Landosky made 44 saves for Baldwin (1-15-2).
