High school roundup for Jan. 22, 2024: Meghan Murray becomes Hampton’s all-time leading scorer in win over Mars

Meghan Murray finished with a career-high 38 points to become Hampton’s all-time leading scorer in a 54-42 victory over Mars in Section 2-5A girls basketball Monday night.

Murray has 1,414 career points, passing Ali Collins, who set the record at 1,383 in 2018. Murray was 13 of 14 from the free-throw line for the Talbots (10-6, 6-2) and made two 3-pointers, including a buzzer-beater from the logo at the end of the first quarter. Alexis Cashdollar scored 12 and Carmella McDole had 10 for Mars (8-7, 4-3).

Armstrong 50, North Hills 35 – Emma Paul drained five 3-pointers and finished with 24 points to help Armstrong (13-4, 6-2) hand North Hills (9-1, 6-1) its first Section 2-5A loss of the year. Gianna Sturdivant scored 12 points for North Hills.

Belle Vernon 50, Ringgold 20 – Caroline Lee scored 10 points to lead Belle Vernon (8-9, 4-4) in a Section 3-4A win. Lanoya Alford paced Ringgold (3-12, 0-8) with seven points.

Bentworth 54, Frazier 47 – Aubrie Logan (22 points, 10 rebounds) and Kayla O’Dell (11 points, 12 rebounds) each recorded a double-double and Amber Sallee finished with 14 points as Bentworth (4-12, 1-7) defeated Frazier (5-11, 2-6) in Section 4-2A. Allie Yauch and Malana Burton each scored 17 points and Chloe Harger added 12 for the Commodores.

Bishop Canevin 54, Riverview 44 – Amari Elliott scored 16 points and Kyla Cooley added 10 for Bishop Canevin (3-10) in a nonsection win. Katerina Tsambis scored 15 and Lola Abraham added 10 for Riverview (11-5).

Burrell 48, Jeannette 22 – Casey Brancato scored 18 points and Julianna Fisher added 12 to lead Burrell (12-3) to a nonsection win. Navarah Smith led Jeannette (6-7-1) with 16 points.

California 45, Carmichaels 38 – Rakiyah Porter scored 21 points and Hayley Gibson added 13 to push California (8-8, 5-3) to a Section 4-2A win. Megan Voithfer scored eight points for Carmichaels (2-13, 1-6).

Carlynton 43, East Allegheny 18 – Carlee Hughes scored 17 points and Jocelyn Griffin hit for 15 as Carlynton (5-10) rolled to a nonsection win. Ronniya Lawrence had 11 to lead East Allegheny (0-16).

Charleroi 69, Geibel 50 – Bella Carroto scored 26 points to power Charleroi (7-8) to a nonsection win. Riley Jones added 17 and Ella Sypolt had 14. Emma Larkin scored 38 points for Geibel (11-4), hitting the 1,000-point mark for her career.

Chartiers-Houston 51, Beth-Center 36 – Ava Capozzoli scored 21 points to lead Chartiers-Houston (12-4, 8-0) to a Section 4-2A win. Lauren Brown scored 11 points for Beth-Center (7-9, 4-4).

Chartiers Valley 41, Canon-McMillan 38 – Emma Reynolds scored 18 points and Rachel Boehm added 11 to push Chartiers Valley (13-2, 6-1) to a Section 2-6A win. Lauren Borella led Canon-McMillan (10-7, 3-5) with 14 points and Nadia Davis had 13.

Clairton 60, Ellis School 11 – Iyanna Wade scored 42 points to lead Clairton (13-2, 5-2) to a Section 3-2A win. Angelina Jones led Ellis School (6-10, 1-6) with eight points.

Derry 48, Valley 2 – Samantha Gruska scored 12 points and Rachelle Marinchek added 11 to lead Derry (5-11, 2-6) past Valley (0-16, 0-8) in Section 1-4A.

Elizabeth Forward 68, Uniontown 18 – Alyssa Terza led Elizabeth Forward (14-2, 7-0) with 18 points and Michelle Jellison added 16 in a Section 3-4A win. Akira Dade scored 10 points for Uniontown (5-10, 2-5).

Freedom 81, Shenango 22 – Shaye Bailey went off for 40 points, Olivia Henderson dropped 20 and MacKenzie Mohrbacher added 11 as Freedom (8-8, 6-2) coasted to a Section 1-2A win. Amara DeFrank led Shenango (3-13, 1-7) with nine points.

Greensburg Central Catholic 84, Steel Valley 20 – Erica Gribble put up 20 points, Mya Morgan followed with 19, Cara Dupilka scored 13 and Avery Davis finished with 12 as Greensburg Central Catholic (12-4, 8-0) dominated Steel Valley (0-16, 0-8) in Section 3-2A.

Hopewell 51, Ambridge 14 – Caylee Sunday scored 27 points and tied a school single-game record with eight 3-pointers to lead Hopewell (8-7, 3-2) to a Section 2-4A win over Ambridge (2-14, 0-5).

Laurel Highlands 84, Southmoreland 18 – Miya Harris led Laurel Highlands (14-1, 7-1) with 24 points, Ayrianna Sumpter followed with 16 and Aierra Jenkins added 15 in a Section 3-4A win over Southmoreland (1-14, 1-6).

Lincoln Park 71, Quaker Valley 37 – J’La Kizart scored 18 points and Maddie Syka and Abbi Jannuzi added 14 apiece to lead Lincoln Park (15-0) to a nonsection win. Mimi Thiero led Quaker Valley (2-13) with 25 points.

McGuffey 60, Jefferson-Morgan 19 – Taylor Schumacher dropped 18 points, Ashlyn Moore produced 17 and Faith Ealy added 14 to lead McGuffey (13-3, 3-2) to a nonsection win over Jefferson-Morgan (2-14, 0-5).

Moon 59, Central Valley 31 – Jaedin Griggs put up 23 points and Leiana Rucker finished with 10 for Moon (11-5) in a nonsection win over Central Valley (5-9).

Oakland Catholic 83, Connellsville 25 – London Creach led with 21 points, Kaylee DeAngelo followed with 19, Alayla Bivins added 15 and Josie Fontana had 11 for Oakland Catholic (17-0, 8-0) in a Section 3-5A win. Bailey Liska scored eight points for Connellsville (3-12, 0-8).

Penn-Trafford 57, Albert Gallatin 28 – Kamryn Pieper led Penn-Trafford (11-5, 5-3) with 15 points and Lauren Marton followed with 14 in a Section 3-5A win. Mya Glisan scored 10 for Albert Gallatin (4-12, 1-7).

Serra Catholic 66, Springdale 18 – Bri Battles scored 16 points to pace Serra Catholic (12-3, 6-1) in a Section 3-2A win over Springdale (6-11, 2-4). Cara Leahy led the Dynamos with seven points.

South Fayette 57, Indiana 34 – Juliette Leroux scored 14 points and Haylie Lamonde and Erica Hall added 12 points apiece to lead South Fayette (9-6) to a nonsection win. Cassandra Boyer scored nine points for Indiana (11-3).

St. Joseph 59, Deer Lakes 22 – Gia Richter scored 17 points and Julie Spinelli added 13 to lead St. Joseph (14-2) to a nonsection win. Sophia Laurenza led Deer Lakes (4-12) with eight.

Union 57, Riverside 17 – Kelly Cleaver and Kylie Fruehstorfer scored 18 points apiece and Mia Preuhs added eight for Union (12-5) in a nonsection win over Riverside (3-10).

Yough 63, Ligonier Valley 46 – Autumn Matthews hit for 34 points and Carly Fitzgibbons added 14 to lead Yough (8-7) to a nonsection win. Marlee Miller scored 12 and Abby Springer had 10 for Ligonier Valley (4-11).

Allderdice 90, Brashear 64 – Logan Golle hit for 40 points, Asher Schwartz and Ma’ayan Kohai scored 12 apiece and Azerick Jetter finished with 10 as Allderdice (12-2, 5-0) defeated Brashear (5-8, 2-2) in the City League. Titus Gillet put up 25 points, Garett White added 13 and Mike Lee had 12 for the Bulls.

Avonworth 60, West Mifflin 30 – Anthony Arlia scored 11 points and Rowan Carmichael followed with 10 as Avonworth (11-4, 5-0) beat West Mifflin (8-6, 2-3) in Section 4-4A.

Berlin-Brothersvalley 67, Latrobe 61 – Pace Prosser led all scorers with 36 points, Craig Jarvis added 16 and Hayden Hutzell finished with 12 as Berlin-Brothersvalley beat Latrobe (8-8) in nonsection play. Max Butler and John Wetzel each scored 22 for the Wildcats.

Burrell 69, Valley 45 – Macky Bennis scored 27 points and Ryan Croushore and Tucker Bitar each added 14 to lead Burrell (10-3, 5-2) to a Section 3-3A win. Mickael Allen scored 16 and Tayshawn Hawkins had 10 for Valley (4-9, 2-4).

Butler 70, Hempfield 52 – Braylon Littlejohn and Tayt Lucas scored 17 points apiece and Donovan Carney added 16 to lead Butler (11-2) to a nonsection win. Max Williams led Hempfield (3-13) with 14 points and Aaron Woodley had 12.

Chartiers-Houston 53, Burgettstown 35 – Nate Gregory posted 22 points and Justus Buckingham finished with 12 as Chartiers-Houston (11-5, 4-3) rolled to a Section 4-2A win. James Leuice scored 18 points and Zack Schrockman added 10 for Burgettstown (12-5, 5-2).

Fort Cherry 85, Beth-Center 41 – Derek Errett scored 28 points, Shane Cornali had 14 and Blake Sweder added 12 to lead Fort Cherry (11-4, 6-0) to a Section 4-2A win. Santino Revi scored 11 points for Beth-Center (4-11, 2-4).

Frazier 63, Bentworth 46 – In Section 4-2A, Dalian McManus put up 25 points, Brock Alekson added 13 points and 12 rebounds, and Brennan Stewart followed with 12 points and 15 boards in a win for Frazier (9-7, 4-3). Ben Hays paced Bentworth (3-11, 2-5) with 11 points.

Jefferson-Morgan 70, Geibel 50 – Dayten Marion scored 19 points and John Woodward added 15 for Jefferson-Morgan (10-6, 3-2) in a Section 2-A win. Tommy Kolenick led all scorers with 24 points, Gary Tarbuck added 12 and Steven Neighbors followed with 10 for Geibel (0-16, 0-5).

Monessen 57, Brownsville 53 – Tyvaughn Kershaw scored 14 points, Devontae Robinson followed with 13, and Tim Kershaw and Darryl Ray each scored 11 as Monessen (12-1, 5-0) beat Brownsville (6-11, 1-7) in nonsection play. Trenton Wible put up 16 points and Rylan Johnson added 13 for the Falcons.

North Allegheny 62, Seneca Valley 53 – Joey Dopirak scored 19 points, Joe Marquis and Anthony Sciote added 14 points apiece and Ty Iwanokiw had 12 to push North Allegheny (6-9, 3-2) to a Section 1-6A win. Tyler Pepin scored 23 points and Owen Congdon had 18 for Seneca Valley (5-12, 1-4).

Obama Academy 45, Carrick 41 – Noron Jackson produced 15 points and Torien Perkins netted 12 for Obama Academy (4-8, 3-1) in a City League win. Brayden Fisher scored 14 points to pace Carrick (5-9, 2-3).

Sewickley Academy 67, South Side 55 – Lucas Grimsley dropped 23 points, Nolan Donnelly finished with 22 and True Robinson scored 10 as Sewickley Academy (8-5, 1-3) defeated South Side (6-9, 1-4) in Section 1-2A. Andrew Corfield led all scorers with 26 points while Carter Wilson and Brody Almashy each produced 10 for the Rams.

West Allegheny 59, Canon-McMillan 58 – Brandon Bell put up 17 points and pulled in 13 rebounds, Justin Manns scored 18 points and Brady Miller hit for 14 in a nonsection win for West Allegheny (11-6). Evan Morris and Roman Koenemund each posted 10 points for Canon-Mac (7-9).

Belle Vernon 45, Yough 15 – Austin Hoffman (182) and Perry Riggle (285) recorded pins and Luke Bryer (220) won by decision to lead Belle Vernon (4-2, 3-2) to a Section 2-2A win over Yough (1-10, 1-4).

Hockey

Beaver 10, Hampton 2 – Roman Guido had a six-point game with two goals and four assists, Zack Masters had a hat trick and added an assist, and Trevor Schmidt scored twice to lead Beaver (7-7-2) in Class A. Sean Sullivan and Sam Modlin scored for Hampton (4-11).

Blackhawk 3, Avonworth 1 – Finn Conolon scored twice, Daniel Ostrom added a goal and Evan Kennelly made 31 saves to lead Blackhawk (9-2-1) to a Class A win. Conner Ralston scored for Avonworth (13-3).

Bishop Canevin 6, Wilmington 2 – Ryan Saginaw had a hat trick and Eion Tiernan, Brian Kalanish and Ben Ondrejko also scored as Bishop Canevin (14-0) won a Varsity D2 matchup. Brody Young and Drake Davis were the goal scorers for Wilmington (2-11).

Indiana 4, Butler 2 – Phil Bell scored twice and Ash Lockard and Landin Wilson each had a goal and an assist for Indiana (12-1-1) in a Class A win. Andrew Roskovski and Kian Fries scored for Butler (8-9).

McDowell 2, West Allegheny 1 – Jacob Baniewicz’s second goal of the game broke a 1-1 tie in the third period and led McDowell (4-9-2) to a Class A win. John Wineland scored for West Allegheny (2-14). Dillon Martin made 36 saves for McDowell. Danny Lewis stopped 27 shots for West Allegheny.

Moon 14, Westmont Hilltop 0 – Josh Hatton recorded a hat trick and Noah Driscoll scored a pair as Moon (9-7) blanked Westmont Hilltop (0-17) in Class A.

Norwin 6, Bishop McCort 3 – Mason Hohman scored a hat trick and Dom Costantino and Alex Thomas each had a goal and two assists for Norwin (9-5-2) in a Class 2A win. Sammy Treager scored twice for Bishop McCort (5-9-1).

Quaker Valley 7, Montour 0 – Jace Vasbinder and Max Morovich scored a pair of goals apiece while Charlie Pyle, Ben McHenry and Colin York each tacked on a goal as Quaker Valley (13-0-1) blanked Montour (5-13) in Class A. Landon Buterbaugh stopped all 24 shots he faced for the shutout.

South Fayette 4, Penn-Trafford 3 (OT) – Nathaniel Keller’s second goal of the game was the overtime winner as South Fayette (11-1-2) won in Class 2A. Robert Chiappetta had a goal and three assists and Tyler Brandebura added a goal and an assist. Bryce Kropczynski and Gavin Paterson each had a goal and an assist for Penn-Trafford (6-6-3).

Thomas Jefferson 5, Armstrong 4 – Jake Stock scored with less than two minutes left in the third to lift Thomas Jefferson (12-2) over Armstrong (3-11) in Class 2A. Lucas Blose, Roman Fluhme, Andrew Oliver and Nick Best also scored for the Jaguars. Jason Rullo scored twice while Jonas Miller and Adam Hooks each added a goal for Armstrong.
