High school roundup for Jan. 6, 2024: Lincoln Park falls to Neumann-Goretti in state title rematch

Larenzo Jerkins scored 23 points to lead Neumann-Goretti to an 80-67 win over Lincoln Park in the BK Classic in Erie on Saturday night, avenging a loss to the Leopards in last year’s PIAA Class 4A championship game.

St. Joe’s recruit Khaafiq Myers added 22 points for Neumann-Goretti (10-0). Meleek Thomas led all scorers with 29 points for Lincoln Park (8-3). Brandin Cummings added 22.

Eden Christian 87, Riverview 69 – Luke Gronbeck had 30 points to lead four Eden Christian players in double figures in a nonsection win. Nathan Garrett scored 17, Ben Rice netted 12 and Grayson Reichert added 10 for the Warriors (5-6). Riverview (5-6) also had four players finish in double figures led by Nate Sprajcar’s 21 points. Holden Deasy and Jack Loughren scored 14 apiece and Alex Schultheis had 13.

Knoch 66, South Fayette 62 – Jackson Bauman scored 27 points to lead Knoch (9-2) to the nonsection win against South Fayette (5-6). Derek Lang added 20 points for Knoch while teammate Teegan Finocan chipped in 11 points. Michael Plasko led South Fayette with 26 points and Gavin Orosz added 11 points. South Fayette led 47-41 heading into the fourth quarter.

North Catholic 60, Penn Hills 45 – In his return after missing the last three games due to injury, Max Hurray scored 21 points to help North Catholic (6-5) win at the Don Graham Classic. Jude Rottman added 12 points for the Trojans. Robert Thomas led Penn Hills (6-3) with 21 points and Khalil Wall scored 15.

OLSH 42, Quaker Valley 41 – Jake Johnson hit the game-winning 3-pointer at the buzzer to lead OLSH (8-3) at the Chuckie Mahoney Classic. Tiernan McCullough led the Chargers with 10 points. Sam Chapman scored 15 and Joseph Coyle added 12 for Quaker Valley (6-4).

Sharon 72, Laurel 15 – In nonsection play, Coen Fertig scored 15 points as Sharon downed Laurel (2-8).

Washington 74, Fort Cherry 68 – De’Ondre Daugherty had 27 points to pace Washington (7-5) in a win in the Chuckie Mahoney Classic at Burgettstown. Ruben Gordon added 15 points for the Little Prexies. Derek Errett led Fort Cherry (6-4) with 23 points and Shane Cornali scored 15.

Weir (WV) 82, Avella 38 – Gee Cross scored 27 points to lead Weir (W.Va) to victory over Avella (6-7) at the Chuckie Mahoney Classic at Burgettstown. Westley Burchianti’s 15 points paced Avella.

West Allegheny 47, Burgettstown 32 – Brandon Bell posted a double-double with 27 points and 17 rebounds for West Allegheny (9-3) in a win over Chuckie Mahoney classic host Burgettstown (10-3). Zack Schrockman had 13 points and James Leuice scored 12 for the Blue Devils.

Girls

Aquinas Academy 59, Burrell 23 – Violet Johnson and Eliot Keverline scored 10 points each as Aquinas Academy (11-2) beat Burrell (7-3) in nonsection play. Jules Fisher led Burrell with 11 points.

Chartiers Valley 59, Quaker Valley 19 – Emma Reynolds had 20 points and Ava Shazer finished with 14 to lead Chartiers Valley (9-1) to victory at the PBC Hall of Fame Classic at Ambridge. Mimi Thiero had 14 for Quaker Valley (2-7).

Fort Cherry 53, Washington 32 – Raney Staub had 21 points to lead Fort Cherry (8-3) over Washington (3-7) at the Chuckie Mahoney Classic at Burgettstown. Taraysia Finley had 11 points for Washington.

Freeport 58, Riverview 42 – Morgan Croney had 18 points and five 3-pointers to lead Freeport (5-8) to the nonsection win over Riverview (9-2). Jaden Gailot added 10 points for Freeport while Isabel Chaparro scored a game-high 21 points for Riverview, which had its eight-game winning streak snapped.

North Catholic 58, Greensburg Central Catholic 42 – At the Don Graham Classic, Alayna Rocco hit six 3-pointers on way to scoring 24 points to lead host North Catholic (6-4) to the win against Greensburg Central Catholic (7-3). Brady Wehner added 14 points for North Catholic, which trailed at halftime, 27-19. Erica Gribble and Mya Morgan scored 17 and 12 points, respectively, for Greensburg Central Catholic.

Oakland Catholic 72, Baldwin 47 – Mia Leonne had 19 points while Josie Fontana had 18 points as Oakland Catholic (11-0) beat Baldwin (6-6) at the PBC Hall of Fame Classic at Ambridge. Mary Vargo led Baldwin with 16 points while Lynsey Bernotas added 14 points.

OLSH 54, Avella 16 – Presley Holmes scored 11 points to lead OLSH (8-4) past Avella (2-10) at the Chuckie Mahoney Classic at Burgettstown.

Weir (WV) 52, Chartiers-Houston 49 – Janai Turner scored 24 points to lead Weir in the Chuckie Mahoney Classic. Ava Capozzoli (12), Allison Wingard (11), Amelia Brose (10) and Mia Mitrik (10) hit double figures for CHartiers-Houston (7-4).

West Allegheny 54, Burgettstown 39 – Alaina Holtz scored 16 points and Emma Ruperto added 10 to power West Allegheny (5-6) at the Chuckie Mahoney Classic. Paige Klodowski scored 15 points and Kaitlyn Nease finished with 13 for Burgettstown (5-8).

Westinghouse 31, Ellis School 28 – In nonsection play, Janiya Wheeler had 13 points as Westinghouse (3-4) beat Ellis School (5-7). Angelina Jones scored 12 points for Ellis School, which entered the fourth quarter with a three-point lead.

Wheeling Park 52, Norwin 51 – Lauren Palangio had 19 points, but Norwin (9-3) dropped a tight nonsection game.

Wrestling

Bo Wood Tournament – Baldwin had four champions and finished second in the team standings behind North Star. Owen Klodowski (127), Ramil Islanov (139), Mario DelRosario (152) and Keith Mincin (160) won titles for the Highlanders. Tournament host Indiana had three champions in Nico Fanella (121), Tuscan Blystone (133) and Domnic Fanella (172). Knoch’s Owen Layhew won the 145-pound title.

MAC Tournament – Harbert Caiden (114), AJ Snatchko (127), Nick Jones (152) and Shawn Taylor (172) took home individual titles to help West Allegheny secure the team title at the annual event at Freedom. Quaker Valley had three champions and finished second in the team standings. Bruce Anderchak (107), Jack Kazalas (133) and Matt Danna (145) won for the Quakers. Central Valley had two champions in Antonio Boni (121) and Brenan Morgan (215). Montour’s Anthony Orlandini (139), Hopewell’s Isaiah Pisano (160), South Side’s Slayton Williams (189) and Laurel’s Casey Wilson (285) also won a title.

TRICADA Tournament – Parker Sentipal (133) and Rudy Brown (152) won individual titles for Burgettstown, which secured the team championship. Bentworth had the most individual champions with three: Chris Vargo (127), Owen Ivcic (145) and Vitali Daniels (189). Host Canon-McMillan had two champions in Collier Hartman (121) and Geno Calgaro (215). Peters Township’s Nicholas McGarrity (107), South Fayette’s Brock Dennison (114), Trinity’s Blake Reihner (139), Jefferson-Morgan’s Chase Frameli (160), Fort Cherry’s Braedon Welsh (172) and Waynesburg’s Roan Tustin (285) each won a championship.
