Ellwood City’s Walley makes history; Frazier’s Lawrence loses controversial match at PIAA Class AA championships

HERSHEY — On a day when Ellwood City senior Austin Walley became the school’s first state champion, the only thing fans who attended the PIAA Class AA championship were talking about was officiating in the 160-pound final.
The PIAA released the pairings for the state wrestling tournament, and, not surprisingly, numerous WPIAL champions were seeded No. 1, including seven in Class AAA.

The 160-pound senior dominated at the PIAA Class AA Southwest Regional this past weekend at IUP’s Kovalchick Convention and Athletic Complex. He captured his second regional title without giving up a point and recorded a perfect 4-0 record. He won three of his matches by fall and one by technical fall.

The 2018-19 season was a struggle for perennial girls basketball power Mt. Lebanon. While section rival Peters Township was perfect, the Blue Devils finished 12-11 and lost to Norwin in the opening round of the playoffs.

The Thomas Jefferson girls basketball team enjoyed a tremendous 2018-19 season, finishing 22-8. Half of their losses were to WPIAL and PIAA champion Chartiers Valley.
