WPIAL Plays of the Week – Week One 2017
September 5, 2017
After Week Zero whet the appetite of many high-school football fans, this past Friday served as the official start of the 2017 WPIAL campaign. For most teams, that marked the beginning of conference play, as well. Out of thousands of snaps from the games, just four plays made this last. These highlights included a top-ranked […]

August 31, 2017
Welcome to Week 1 of the high school football season. As many of you know, the MSA Sports Network had a rough off-season. Earlier this summer, we lost our beloved friend and long-time broadcaster, Mark Schaas.  Then, just as we began to regroup from the loss, we caught word that the future of the Network […]

We know how fast this goes from previous experience, so we won’t be surprised when the playoff pairings show jumps on us real fast. How many week one games will be the difference between teams being part of that show and teams being on the outside looking in? Only time will tell and it is […]

CTK ’17 – 5-A Allegheny Nine Conference Preview
August 21, 2017
Look on the sidelines in games involving Allegheny Conference teams and you might want to often say, “Hey, new guy.” The Allegheny Nine is full of new head coaches. Of the nine teams, four have new head coaches. One team, Woodland Hills, has changed head coaches twice since the end of last season. The new […]

WPIAL football conference preview: Class 5A Allegheny 9
August 10, 2017
The favorite West Allegheny (13-1 overall, 8-0 Allegheny 9 in 2016) Though standout skill players Kenny White (Pine-Richland), a Division I-bound defensive back, and all-conference WR Brandon Lipford (Montour) transferred and six other first-team all-conference players graduated, the defending WPIAL Class 5A champion Indians have plenty of talent remaining. WPIAL Alum Q&A – Tim Shoup
February 20, 2017
The 2010-11 PIHL season was one for the record books for Upper St. Clair, as the Panthers won both the Penguins Cup and Pennsylvania Cup in dramatic fashion. That historic team was comprised of several future DI players, including sophomore blueliner Tim Shoup. Shoup, who is now one of the top defensemen at Dartmouth College, is under the microscope for this week's edition of the WPIAL Alum Q&A. During that campaign for the Panthers, Shoup contributed one goal and eight assists in the regular season. Upper St. Clair advanced to the Class AAA title game against Canon-McMillan, but the Panthers trailed late in the third period. The team got the equalizer, though, and then prevailed in overtime to claim the championship.

Scholastic Notebook – 01/27/2017
January 27, 2017
If A.J. Myers and Cameron Hanley ever get together and grab a bite to eat, it would only be appropriate if they went to Applebee’s, just so they could order off the 2 for $20 menu. Myers and Hanley are members of the Chartiers-Houston boys basketball team. On the menu that is the leading scorers list for the WPIAL, Myers and Hanley are the only 2 for 20 you can find. Myers, a 6-foot-1 senior guard, is averaging 26 points a game. He is the sixth-leading scorer in the WPIAL. Hanley, a 6-foot junior guard, is averaging 21.7. No other WPIAL team has two players averaging 20.

WPIAL Coaches Corner – Danny Holzer
January 9, 2017
In this brand new feature titled “Coach’s Corner”, I will be interviewing a different coach every week and asking them questions about their personal life and about coaching. Hopefully their answers will not only shed some light on how they coach their respective teams, but also allow readers to get to know the men behind the fields/courts. This week’s edition is with the boys basketball coach at Upper St. Clair, Danny Holzer. Coach Holzer is entering his 21st season as the Panthers head coach, and he has won two WPIAL titles in 1996 and 2005. Let’s take a look inside Coach Holzer’s corner:

Big Game Hunting for Week Six 2016
October 6, 2016
The game we all circled back on our calendars when the 2016 WPIAL Football schedule came out is finally here. While normally I frown on even inter-conference games getting into Big Game Hunting, let alone an inter-classification game, this game is different. These two teams have long been the gold-standard for WPIAL football and their meeting this Friday at Neil Brown Stadium this week, cannot be denied as a big event for any fan of WPIAL football over the last two decades. I don’t imagine I will get emails complaining about my choices this week, but as a reminder, those should all now be directed to ChixPix1@msasports.net. For now let’s go Big Game Hunting!
