A-K Valley roundup: Burrell wrestling captures 100th straight section win

Burrell's wrestling dominance reached triple digits Wednesday.

With nine wrestlers recording pins and another four winning by forfeit, Class AA No. 1 Burrell routed Section 3B opponent Summit Academy and extended its section winning streak to 100 matches.

Trent Valovchik, Ian Oswalt, Bryan Gaul, A.J. Corrado, Ethan Awes, Corey Christie, Shaun Gates, Austin Mele and Richard Feroce all recorded pins for the Bucs (2-0), whose last section defeat came in 2002-03.

All but one of the pins came in the first period, with Feroce's 24-second victory the quickest.

Kiski Area 75, Plum 3 — Noah Levett, Cam Connor, Jack Blumer and Nick Delp notched pins for Class AAA No. 1 Kiski Area (7-0) in a Section 1A victory over Plum.

Jared Curcio added a victory by decision for Kiski Area.

Cole Yocca won by decision at 106 pounds for Plum, which forfeited eight weight classes.

North Allegheny 63, Fox Chapel 12 — Donovan Cutchember got a pin at 220 pounds for the Foxes in a Class AAA, Section 3B loss to No. 7 North Allegheny. Jordana Matamoros picked up Fox Chapel's other win by forfeit at 106 pounds.

Boys basketball

Apollo-Ridge 68, St. Joseph 53 — Kyle Fitzroy scored a game-high 25 points as Apollo-Ridge overcame a four-point halftime deficit to earn a nonsection win. Keighton Reese added 11 points for Apollo-Ridge (3-5). Grand Bendis recorded a double-double, scoring 12 points and grabbing 14 rebounds for St. Joseph (3-2). Andrew Sullivan led St. Joseph with 20 points.
