Welcome to another edition of “PIHL Notebook,” your weekly companion to “The PIHL Power Play” on the MSA Sports Network. First up, “Melting the Ice” provides your weekly thermometer of streaking teams around the league. Meanwhile, this week’s “Scoreboard Watch” includes a busy week for Freeport in Class A with mixed results along with some wild Open Class action to close out the regular season. Last but not least, we round things out with a preview of two network games coming up this week in Class AAA and Class A. Blackhawk Cougars Hockey Playoff Quarterfinals recap for 2/23/14

The Blackhawk Cougars were a much better road team during the regular season than at home, Sunday night was no different in the opening game of the PIHL Open Cup playoffs as the 5th seeded Cougars knocked off the 4th seeded Trojans at the Mercyhurst Ice Center. Robert Swinderman scored twice and goalie Cory Steinle stopped 28 of 30 shots to advance to the next round on Tuesday night.

Blackhawk Cougars Hockey Game recap for 2/19/14

At the Beaver County Ice Arena in PIHL Open class competition, the Blackhawk Cougars with a chance to play for a home playoff game lost in a tough battle with McDowell 5-3. A win by the Trojans sends the Cougars on the road Sunday February 23rd at Mercyhurst College at a time to be determined in the first round of the Northeast section playoffs.With the loss Blackhawk is the number 5 seed, McDowell the number 4.

Blackhawk Cougars Hockey Game recap for 2/13/14

The Blackhawk Cougars sitting in 4th place and an outside shot at the third seed in the Open Class PIHL playoffs simply laid an egg in a 7-0 nothing loss to the Harbor Creek Huskies. The Huskies have the first seed wrapped up for the playoffs which start Sunday February 23rd. It was all Huskies all night as they came on strong right from the first face off. They had played the night before so it came as somewhat of a surprise. Goals by Zach Morris and Nick Rocco in the first period gave them a 2-0 lead after the first 17:00 minute period. they out shot the Cougars 17-3 as well.

Blackhawk Cougars Hockey Game Recap for 2/6/14

At the Beaver County Ice Arena in Open Class Hockey competition the Wheeling Park Patriots win a wild game over the home standing Blackhawk Cougars by a 6-5 score. In a game with playoff implications for both teams. The game was tied four times, as the Cougars kept coming back. But the Patriots scored last for the win. In the first period Blackhawk scored on a goal by Bobby Piccerilo at 4:28 to open the scoring to give the Cougars a 1-0 lead. Cameron Houk and Grant Rombold had assists. That lead lasted until :17 seconds left in the period as Wheeling Parks Austin Curnes tied it at 1-1. The period ended with the Cougars being out shot 15-12.
