Herald roundup: Fox Chapel tennis takes down Bethel Park

Fox Chapel girls tennis bested Bethel Park, 4-1, on Sept. 11. Emily Fera and Carissa Shepard won in singles, with Lexi Quackenbush/Katie Voigt and Baylin Bitar/Paige Theoret recording doubles wins.

In the Section 3 singles tournament Sept. 12, FC’s Kristen Friday and Emily Fera won their first-round matches. Friday beat SSA’s Aya Youssef, 10-5, in the quarterfinals before falling to Bethany Yauch of Baldwin in the semifinals. Fera lost to Mia Gorman of Bethel Park in the quarterfinals.

In the consolation match Sept. 13, Friday faced SSA’s Elle Santora, both of whom qualified for the WPIAL Class AAA singles tournament. Santora won in straight sets, 6-3, 7-5.

Boys golf

Fox Chapel (17-1, 8-1) fell from the unbeaten ranks Sept. 11 as the Foxes dropped a Section 4-AAA match to Central Catholic, 181-183. Gregor Meyer led the Foxes with a 35, followed by Amani Dambrosio and Scott Bitar at 36, Aidan Oehrle with a 37 and Matt Mattioili at 38.

The Fox Chapel Richard Cullinan Invitational was held at the Pittsburgh Field Club on Sept. 14. The Fox Chapel Red team finished first with a 188, followed by North Allegheny at 200, Latrobe at 201 and Fox Chapel White with 202.

The Fox Chapel Red scores were Meyer and Bitar each with a 35, followed by Oehrle at 37, Mattioli at 40 and Dambrosio and Owen McManus at 41. Grant Thiele led Pittsburgh White with a 36. Willl Livingston and Arnold Vento each finished at 41, Brevin Urso and Ben Uminski shot 42 and Jack Flanagan had a 46.

Shady Side Academy defeated Kiski Area, 195-237, in a Section 8-AAA match Sept. 12, with Adam Lauer shooting a 37. SSA then beat Mars, 200-206, on Sept. 14. Lauer led SSA with a 38.

Girls golf

Shady Side Academy girls golf rolled to a 214-322 win over Kiski Area on Sept. 13. Catherine Jewart shot a 49 to lead the Indians.

Girls soccer

Led by Sarah Sinnott’s three goals, Fox Chapel girls soccer beat Shaler, 5-1, on Sept. 12 to improve to 3-1 overall and 2-1 in Section 1-4A. Maura Curry and Kaylee Uribe also scored for the Foxes, while Kate Feczko had four saves in goal.

Cross country

Fox Chapel took part in the Kiski Invitational on Sept. 15 at Northmoreland Park. With 27 teams participating, the boys finished third while the girls came in fifth. Individual medal winners for the boys were seniors Greg Overbeck and Avery Bursick and freshmen Gabby Kline and Riley McIntyre for the girls.

Field hockey

Fox Chapel hosted Hempfield on Sept. 11 and defeated the Spartans, 6-2. Sloan Rost scored twice while Sydney Condron, Ellie Markel, Mary Ellis and Megan Matthis also scored as the Foxes outshot Hempfield, 18-7. Marissa Hardiman made eight saves in goal.
