Quaker Valley and Sewickley Academy boys soccer teams close out regular season with nonsection matchup

The Quaker Valley and Sewickley Academy boys soccer teams finished off the competition to capture their respective section championships.

The Quakers ended 12-0 in Section 4-AA, and the Panthers went 11-1 in Section 1-A.

With the playoffs on the horizon, the rivals will meet Tuesday evening at 7:30 at Chuck Knox Stadium in Leetsdale.

Quaker Valley allowed only one goal in 12 section games, while Sewickley Academy won its final three in section after a loss to runner-up Riverside.

The Quakers and Panthers split games the past two seasons. Sewickley Academy scored a 3-2 win in 2016, while Quaker Valley responded with a 3-0 victory last year.

McKelvey and Luther advance

Sewickley Academy’s Tatum McKelvey and Zoe Luther were among seven golfers from the WPIAL to qualify for the PIAA Class AA girls finals with top-11 finishes Monday at the Western Regional Championships at Tom’s Run Golf Course at Chestnut Ridge Golf Resort in Blairsville.

McKelvey, a senior, finished fourth with a 6-over 78 for 18 holes. Luther, a junior, tied Carmichaels sophomore Remmey Lohr for ninth with rounds of 85 (13 over).

Central Valley senior Kiaria Porter, eighth at WPIALs, led the WPIAL contingent Monday with a runner-up finish at 3 over (75).

Porter and North East freshman Lydia Swan each shot 75, and Swan edged Porter in a three-hole playoff tiebreaker.

The PIAA finals will be Monday and Tuesday, Oct. 22 and 23, at Heritage Hills Golf Resort in York.

Aber among top finishers at boys regional tournament

Sewickley Academy junior JF Aber shot a 3-over 75 to finish tied for fifth at Monday’s boys PIAA Western Regional at Tom’s Run Golf Course at Chestnut Ridge Golf Resort in Blairsville.

He was one of a dozen WPIAL Class AA golfers to punch tickets to the PIAA finals Monday and Tuesday, Oct. 22 and 23, at Heritage Hills Golf Resort in York.

Aber’s teammate, senior Austin Applegarth, tied for 10th, and Quaker Valley junior Aidan Bulger placed 14 th .

Twenty-two of the 44 golfers will advance. Riverside junior Skyler Fox, the WPIAL champion, and Elizabeth Forward senior Angus McHolme, the WPIAL runner-up, tied for second Monday with 18-hole scores of 2 over (74).
