District College Football Recap for Saturday, October 27th

The PSAC race took an interesting turn with the 13th ranked Vulcans going down to defeat, Mercyhurst and IUP picked up wins, setting up a 3-way battle to go to the PSAC title game in a couple of weeks.Waynesburg remains unbeaten, the Yellow Jackets will have a week to rest up before the battle with W & J for the PAC title.Here are recaps of all the games:Slippery Rock 28 - California 26 The Rock survived two blocked punts and a pair of fumbles late to hand the 13th ranked Vulcans a loss in back to back seasons. The win was the third straight for SRU and scrambles the PSAC West Division race going into the final week.

WPIAL Week Nine Saturday’s Scholastic Starz
One team was playing for playoff positioning and a chance to finish as high as third place instead of sixth place while the other was home for one final game playing for pride and bragging rights against an arch-rival. That was the setup for the final Saturday of the 2012 WPIAL football regular season and the lightest day of the season with only two games on the docket. Peters Township Girls Golden Again, Win State Tennis Crown

Peters Township continued their dominance over the rest of the state in Girls AAA Team Tennis. On Saturday, the Indians captured their second consecutive PIAA AAA championship by blanking Unionville 3-0.The victory gives Peters Township their fourth state crown in the past seven years and marked the seventh straight year that a WPIAL team captured gold in the PIAA Class AAA Girls Team Tennis Championship.The Indians beat Erie McDowell 5-0 in Round One, eliminated Harriton 4-1 in the Quarterfinals on Friday in Hershey, then knocked out Conestoga in the Semifinals on Saturday morning before the winning the championship at the Hershey Racquet Club.

Whether there was intense pressure or with very little at stake, here are the Primetime Performances from the final Friday of the regular season in the WPIAL.Patrick Turner - Kiski Area2012 has been the year of the great turn-around for several programs in the WPIAL, including that of Kiski Area. Patrick Turner helped complete the comeback season, rushing for 101 yards and scoring four touchdowns on three runs and a 61-yard fumble return for a score as the Cavalier, 1-8 in 2011, improved to 4-5 this season by clinching a Class AAAA Foothills Conference playoff spot with a 41-14 victory over the host Latrobe Wildcats.

Saying “it’s time to move on,” Chartiers Valley’s Chris Saluga will coached his final game with the Colts Friday night. Saluga has decided to resign as Chartiers Valley’s football coach, effective after Friday night’s game against West Allegheny. Saluga already has handed in his letter of resignation to the school board. “I don’t know how to say it, other than it’s just time for me to move on,” Saluga said. “I’ve done all I can here.”

Central Valley Girls Win PIAA AA Team Golf Championship
Thanks in part to Macky Fouse's 77 on Wednesday, the Central Valley girls golf team captured the PIAA Class AA team championship at the Heritage Hills Golf Resort in York. The Warriors become only the second WPIAL girls team to win a state golf championship, following the Shady Side Academy Indians, who won state crowns in 2008, 2009 and 2011. 2012 PIAA Boys and Girls Final Golf Results
Close, but no golden cigar for WPIAL boys and girls golfers at the 2012 PIAA Individual Golf Championships Monday and Tuesday at the Heritage Hills Golf Resort and Conference Center in York. Tommy Nettles of Peters Township finished in 2nd place in Boys AAA while Matt Barto of Leechburg was 2nd in Boys AA. Lauren Walker of Canon-McMillan was 3rd in Girls AAA while Macky Fouse of Central Valley was 3rd in Girls AA.Here are all of the results from the two day event. Some great games this weekend on the local college football slate, Waynesburg holds on to their unbeaten record, an overtime thriller in the PSAC and could Lock Haven actually win a game for the first time in 50 tries.Here are recaps of all the games:Slippery Rock 38 - Edinboro 31 in overtime Nigel Barksdale hit LaQuinn Stephens-Howling for a touchdown in the first overtime, the Rock defense held and Slippery Rock send the crowd home happy on Homcoming Day at Mihalik-Thompson Stadium with the win. The Rock defense did the job when it had to all day, sacking Edinboro QB Cody Harris 9 times.
