Scholastic Notebook – 03/28/2014

Baseball and softball teams were able to start playing games last week. But it’s never too early to look ahead – and there are two teams that have a chance to make history come late May. In baseball, Seneca Valley has been to the WPIAL Class AAAA championship game three years in a row, winning twice and losing last year. The Raiders could become the first WPIAL team in at least 70 years to make a championship game four years in a row. A check of WPIAL final game scores that go back to 1954, shows that no team has played in a championship game four consecutive years. Some teams have made it three years in a row. North Allegheny made it four of five years from 1990-94. Shaler made it four of five years from 1980-84.

With a new season upon us and WPIAL section play scheduled to start for some on Monday, March 31st, MSA Sports takes a look at some of the baseball players and the teams to watch for this 2014 campaign. The season again starts with a chill in the air, but who will be left standing when the district playoffs conclude in the heat of the final week in May. Four teams enter the season looking for back-to-back WPIAL baseball titles as North Allegheny, South Park, Beaver and Western Beaver start hitting for more gold. MSA Sports will have weekly rankings every Monday during the regular season, plus broadcasts and updated standings daily leading up to our exclusive coverage of the WPIAL Baseball Playoffs only here on the MSA Sports Network.

2014-2015 WPIAL Springs Sports Alignment

The WPIAL Board of Control has approved the final seasonal alignment starting next season as the district spring sports sectional alignment has been approved. The new alignment kicks into affect next spring for WPIAL Baseball, Softball, Boys Volley, Boys Tennis, Boys Track & Field and Girls Track & Field. 2013 WPIAL BASEBALL REVIEW

For the third time in four years, half of the WPIAL baseball championships went to Beaver County schools, with Western Beaver in Class A and Beaver in Class AA winning district gold for 'The County'. Allegheny County schools captured the other two crowns as South Park was perfect through the district playoffs in Class AAA and North Allegheny claimed another title for the north in Class AAAA. It's time to look back at another high school sports year with the top stories from around the WPIAL in 2013. Here is our entire countdown fr0m #25 through #1. #25 - Playoff Drought Ends In a year when the Pittsburgh Pirates ended a long Major League Baseball playoff drought, a long WPIAL football playoff drought also came to an end when in Week 9, the Avella Eagles clinched a WPIAL playoffs berth with a 55-14 thrashing of Bentworth to clinch fourth place in the Class A Tri-County South Conference.

It's time to look back at another high school sports year with the top stories from around the WPIAL in 2013. We continue our countdown with the five stories that ended up #10 through #6. #10 - Sto-Rox Cuts Spring Sports School district budget cuts led to Sto-Rox High School dropping its baseball and softball programs in late June. While the district is looking for a co-op with another school district for both programs, returning baseball and softball players can either move to another district, attend a private school or just not play this upcoming spring.

We continue our countdown with the five stories that ended up #20 through #16. #20 - Virgin Playoff Teams There are teams that haven't played in the WPIAL football playoffs in 'X' amount of years, then there are schools that have never played in a WPIAL football game...ever. Until this 2013 season that is. Summit Academy is a small court-adjudicated facility in rural Butler County that started in 1998. The Knights roster not only changes drastically from year to year, but also could change from week-to-week.

West Edges East in 2013 Frontier League All-Star Game

En route to their first victory in two years, the West used a big second inning to capture a 4-2 nail-biter against the East All-Stars at CONSOL Energy Park in Washington, Pa and here on MSA Sports on Wednesday.The game featured outstanding pitching by both teams and an electrifying finish line that saw the East nearly rally to win the mid-summer classic.In the top of the second frame, Tuesday night’s home run derby champion and Schaumburg Boomers Steve McQuail scored on a fielder’s choice from teammate Michael Valadez. Outfielder Sean Mahley also of the Boomers tripled to add two more runs for the West, scoring Valadez and Schwartz to give the West a 3-0 advantage.

Top WPIAL Baseball Player Makes College Choice
One of the most dominant pitchers to come out of the WPIAL in recent years has made his college choice. Soon to be senior Brendan McKay, a left handed pitcher from Blackhawk High School who has been frustrating opponents since his freshman year three years ago, has decided to play his college baseball at the University of Louisville.McKay, who hopes to be drafted high in the 2014 Major League Baseball first-year player draft next June, selected Louisville over scholarship offers from West Virginia, Tennessee, Wake Forest, Virginia, Virginia Teach and Kent State among others. He has twice been named to the MSA Sports Diamond Studs baseball all-star team.

Washington Wild Things Host 2013 Frontier League All-Star Game
The Washington Wild Things and CONSOL ENERGY PARK will play host to the Frontier League’s signature events, the 2013 All-Star Game Wednesday night starting at 7:05pm and can be heard here on the MSA Sports Network.The All-Star Festivities will feature a softball clinic and exhibition softball game with the Akron Racers, a professional women’s softball team, the Home Run Derby contest, a community activity with Habitat for Humanity , a luncheon with keynote speaker Steve Blass, the 2013 Frontier League All-Star Game and much, much more.
