Big things were expected of Sto-Rox this season and the Vikings have lived up to expectations so far. A couple of seniors captured their third WPIAL tennis crowns Friday afternoon at the Glen Creek Tennis Club in Library. The first brackets of the 2011-2012 school year are out as the playoff matches are set for the WPIAL Girls Singles Tennis Championships. The first WPIAL championship of the 2011-2012 school year will be decided on Friday, September 23rd with the WPIAL Girls Singles Tennis Championships. In the end, it was worth the wait for the two top-seeds. For the first time in 17 years, the Mount Lebanon boys tennis team is celebrating gold. The top-seed Blue Devils edged two-time defending champion Shady Side Academy in a match started Thursday and finished Friday due to rain. There were plenty of medals being handed out to WPIAL tennis players Saturday at the Hershey Racquet Club. Back in September, Ronit Yurovsky of Plum beat Sara Perelman of Shady Side Academy in two sets to claim the WPIAL Girls Singles Tennis crown in Class AAA. The 2010 WPIAL Girls High School Tennis Singles Championships were held Friday afternoon at Pine-Richland High School with bright beautiful sunshine and a strong blustery wind. Last fall, Ronit Yurovsky of Plum and Tanya Timko of Chartiers-Houston captured WPIAL Girls Singles Tennis titles while Olivia Heim and Taylor Perz of Pine-Richland and Susie Soltis and Madeline Leo of Greensburg Central Catholic captured WPIAL Girls Doubles Tennis Gold. In Girls Team Tennis, Peters Township and Sewickley Academy were crowned WPIAL champions in 2009.
