PIAA Individual Wrestling Championships – Day One

A remarkable forty of the WPIAL’s forty-two Class AAA wrestlers survived the first day of wrestling and will again be in action Friday afternoon at the 2012 PIAA Wrestling Championships at the GIANT Center in Hershey. With three WPIAL wrestlers entered in each of the fourteen weight classes in the Class AAA brackets, twenty-seven won first round bouts Thursday afternoon to advance to the quarterfinals. Thirteen of the fifteen wrestlers losing in the first round turned around and won their first round consolation matches to remain alive in the tournament. The WPIAL was perfect in five weight classes, advancing all three of its AAA wrestlers at 106, 126, 160, 182 and 285 pounds. Only the 220-pound bracket saw all three wrestlers drop their first round match. But Pine-Richland’s Ben Balish, Canon-McMillan’s Alex Campbell, and Greensburg Salem’s Tanner Hahn all bounced back to win their first round consolation bouts.This Week on the MSA Sports Network – 03/05/2012

2012 WPIAL Class AAA Individual Wrestling Results

The WPIAL Individual Championships finished the same way the Team Championships did, with the Canon-McMillan Big Macs on top. Canon-McMillan finished first in the team standings with 216.5 points, over 100 more than the 2nd place team Central Catholic (112 points). Franklin Regional (111 points), Hampton (107.5 points), and Greensburg Salem (99 points) wrapped up the top five.Helping Canon-McMillan win the team race were 8 wrestlers making it to the finals. Conner Schram (120), Solomon Chishko (138), outstanding wrestler Cody Wiercioch (182), and Cody Klempay (285) were all champions for the Big Macs, as they will take 8 wrestlers to Hershey next week. Franklin Regional will have 4 wrestlers advance to the PIAA tournament while Central Catholic, Kiski, North Allegheny, and Upper St. Clair will all have 3 wrestlers advancing.PIAA Southwest Regional Class AA Individual Wrestling Results

The two day PIAA Class AA Southwest Regional Wrestling Championships are in the books in the final step to Hershey. Here are the results from the Cambria County War Memorial in Johnstown as the top five from each weight class advance to next weeks state finals.WPIAL Class AAA Individual Wrestling Finals – Day Two Highlights
The Class AAA WPIAL Championships had a similar feel Friday as it did on Thursday, as the top wrestlers at each weight class continued to march toward the finals. The Quarterfinals and 1st round of consolations were wrestled on Friday, with four wrestlers being eliminated in each weight class.Only 8 of the 56 top 4 seeds from the 14 weight classes did not advance into the semi-finals that will be wrestled on Saturday. Some of the big upsets on Friday were at 138 pounds, where Hampton’s Kevin Synan beat 2nd seed Cole Landowski of Kiski by fall in 5:09, and at 160 pounds, where Kellan Stout of Mount Lebanon beat 2nd seed Marco Crivelli of Hopewell 4-0. Also pulling upsets were Zack DeLuca of Central Catholic at 220 pounds, beating 3rd seed John Phillips of Albert Gallatin by fall in 4:31, and Damon Sims Jr. of Hopewell beating Luke Fleck of Franklin Regional at 285 pounds 2-1 in double overtime.WPIAL Class AAA Individual Wrestling Finals – Day One Highlights

The AAA WPIAL Championships kicked off from Norwin High School Thursday night. Four wrestlers were eliminated from the 20 man bracket to leave 8 wrestlers remaining in the quarterfinals and 8 wrestlers in the consolations.Overall there weren’t many surprises on the first night of action at Norwin. From the top 6 seeds in each weight class, only 3 lost on Thursday. At 132 pounds, 6th seed Josh Gudenburr of Ringgold lost to Chris Olszewski of Hampton 12-3. At 138 pounds, 5th seed Erik Rayman of Norwin lost to Italo Merante of Peters Township 4-3. The biggest upset of all however came at 152 pounds, when 3rd seed John Kyriacopoulos of Upper St. Clair lost 8-3 to Joe Fiasco of Penn Trafford.AAA WPIAL Champion Canon-McMillan leads the way with 10 wrestlers in the quarterfinals. Derry’s Gulibon Highlights 2012 WPIAL AA Individual Wrestling Championships

Saturday was an historic night at Chartiers Valley High School at the AA WPIAL Championships. That was because Derry senior Jimmy Gulibon joined an elite club, becoming the 22nd wrestler in WPIAL history to win 4 WPIAL Championships. He did it by packaging several takedowns together to knock off Keystone Oaks junior Nick Zanetta 11-4 at 126 pounds. “I felt I could of done a lot more on my feet, scored a little bit more, but Zanetta wrestled a great match”, said Gulibon. “I ended up doing what I needed to do and winning.” Gulibon becomes the second Derry wrestler to join the club, as Troy Dolan won his 4th WPIAL Championship in 2007.New Addition to the WPIAL Four-Time Wrestling Champions Club

It was a quick first day of wrestling in the AA WPIAL Championships on Friday evening at Chartiers Valley High School, but it wasn’t without some sizzle. The top headline was at 145 pounds, where top seed Corey Faleroni of Burrell fell short of advancing into the semi-finals after losing to Taylor Wentzel of South Park 13-6. In addition number two seed at 152 pounds Cody Weinell of Derry lost to Troy Braddock of Blackhawk by fall in 1:57 as well as the number two seed at 195 pounds Allan Cratsenburg of Highlands losing to Jacob Temple of Avella by fall in 5:49.Overall we seen 35 falls or technical falls in the 56 quarterfinal matches wrestled on Friday. The four returning WPIAL Champions from a year ago, Jason Nolf of Kittanning (113), Jimmy Gulibon of Derry (126), Dakota DesLauriers of Burrell (182), and Jordan Kitta of Southmoreland (195), all were victorious by fall and are looking to repeat.WPIAL Wrestling Realignment for 2013 and 2014

The WPIAL Board of Control Tuesday approved the new alignment for WPIAL wrestling sections for the 2012-2013 and the 2013-2014 seasons. The League has retained the "sub-section" format for the regular season. In Class AAA there are four sections while in Class AA there are still three sections.Some of the changes include Blackhawk and Central Valley moving up from Class AA to Class AAA. Canon-McMillan Golden in Claiming PIAA Team Wrestling AAA Title

It wasn’t easy, but Canon-McMillan (24-0) won the 2012 PIAA Class AAA team wrestling championship with a 35-20 victory over McDowell (18-2) this afternoon at the GIANT Center in Hershey, Pennsylvania. In a dual meet that featured four lead changes, the Trojans made things very interesting. After winning six of the first nine bouts contested, McDowell built a slim four point lead.

Mechanicsburg’s talented big men proved to be too much for North Allegheny (20-6) to overcome, as the District 3 runner-up Wildcats tamed the Tigers, 43-22, in a fourth round consolation match today at the PIAA Team Championships at the GIANT Center in Hershey, Pennsylvania. North Allegheny led early, 6-0, on the strength of decisions by sophomores Domenic Forys (113 pounds) and Blynn Shideler (120 pounds). The Wildcats’ Tristan Skelly then knotted the match at 6-6 with a fall at 126 pounds. The Tigers regained the lead briefly at 10-6 as sophomore Jesse Rodgers tallied a convincing 14-1 major decision over Kyle Shuler at 138 pounds.
