2013 WPIAL BOYS BASKETBALL PLAYOFFS Update – 02/24

The all Section 3 Final Four has been whittled to two in Quad A. The two teams that played for the WPIAL Class AAA championship a year ago will now play for the Class AAAA title here in 2013. Both New Castle and Hampton move on to Palumbo after Semifinals victories eliminated Seneca Valley and North Allegheny from the golden chase. While there was plenty to focus in on Saturday including the WPIAL Class AA Wrestling Championships, the WPIAL Class AAA Wrestling Sectionals, the WPIAL Class AAA Diving Championships and the WPIAL Basketball Quarterfinals, there were other titles decided on the final weekend in February. The top four seeds in Boys Class AAA, four of the top five in Boys Class A and four of the top five in Girls Class AA all advanced to the Semifinals on Friday. The lowest seed to reach the Final Four was #7 Gateway in Girls Class AAAA as they eliminated #2 North Allegheny. History may have been made Saturday when four teams from the same section all advanced to the Semifinals. New Castle, North Allegheny, Hampton and Seneca Valley are all headed to the Final Four in Class AAAA with wins Saturday, plus seeds 2, 3 and 4 all lose in Class AA. Clarification alert. These are more seedings and rankings and there is a difference. The WPIAL does not rank the playoff teams from #1 through #16 and beyond. They rank the top four, then the next eight and start filing in the blanks from there which is not an easy task when you have upwards of 26 playoff teams.When putting this together, we looked at every team to discover quality wins. Strength of section, avoiding upset losses and recent program success also comes into play. So teams with average records but some stand out victories may beat out those teams that got fat and happy record wise on a less than stellar schedule. Plus don't forget the shuffling to avoid section teams from playing each other in the Preliminary Round or the First round.This Week on MSA Sports Network – 02/11/2013
