WPIAL Hall of Fame Class of 2017

The newest class of the WPIAL Hall of Fame includes a current NFL player, a former NFL head coach and a high school coach who sent almost a dozen players to the NFL. The 2017 class was announced by the WPIAL at a news conference Thursday at the Heinz History Center. This is the 10th anniversary of the Hall of Fame. The inductees with NFL ties are: Terrelle Pryor, who played for the Cleveland Browns last year and has signed with the Washington Redskins; former New York Jets head coach Joe Walton; former Woodland Hills coach George Novak, who sent 11 players to the NFL.

WPIAL Alum Q&A – Jessie Thiessen
November 21, 2016
For many athletes, their greatest achievements occur when they face and overcome adversity. For Jessie Thiessen, missing her entire junior season at Allegheny College could've possibly derailed her promising career. Instead, Thiessen came back stronger than ever on the pitch this year. The former Fox Chapel standout is the focus of this week's edition of the WPIAL Alum Q&A. In high school, Thiessen was a four-year letter winner for the Foxes, including a three-time offensive MVP for Fox Chapel. Additionally, she was a three-time All-Section honoree, as well as an All-WPIAL selection in her senior year in 2012.

2016 PIAA Girls Soccer State Playoff Results
November 20, 2016
Two out of three ain't bad. The WPIAL sent three district teams to Hershey to play for state girls soccer championships on Friday and Saturday and two teams return home clad in gold. On Friday, the Moon Tigers won their second state championship with a victory in the Class 3-A title match, then on Saturday, Canon-McMillan went overtime to capture the schools first ever PIAA girls soccer crown. The lone exception to a district girls golden weekend was Shady Side Academy bringing home silver in Class 1-A. 2016 PIAA Boys Soccer State Playoff Results
It was a silver lining weekend for a pair of WPIAL teams at Hersheypark Stadium in Chocolate Town. On Friday, Sewickley Academy fell in the Class 1-A finals, then less than 24 hours later, Quaker Valley settled for silver after falling in the Class 2-A state championship. This marks the fourth time this century and the first time since 2011 that a WPIAL boys soccer team did not win a PIAA title. The latest national high school rankings were released earlier this week and there is a WPIAL team at No. 3 in the country. You might be thinking that Pittsburgh Central Catholic is gaining more national acclaim. But this has nothing to do with Central Catholic, or any other WPIAL team. In fact, this has nothing to do with football. We’re talking girls soccer. The Norwin girls are the No. 3 team in the country in the weekly National Soccer Coaches Association of America rankings. Norwin’s impressive season has jumped the Knights up the rankings. They were No. 10 two weeks ago, and No. 4 last week. The only teams ranked ahead of Norwin are Davis High School (Utah) and Glastonbury (Conn.).

Chartiers Valley Hold Off Mars to Win WPIAL 3-A Boys Soccer Championship

Norwin Repeats With Win Over Canon-Mac for Girls 4-A Crown
For the second straight year, the Norwin Knights are WPIAL champions. In 2015, it was in Class AAA. One year and a realignment later and the Knights now are Class 4A champs. The top-seeded Knights dominated the No. 2 seed Big Macs in a game played at Highmark Stadium. Norwin (20-0-1) started the scoring at the 27:50 mark of the first half when Emily Harrigan, a Rutgers recruit, got behind the defense off a feed from Alyssa Victor and beat Canon McMillan goalkeeper Megan Virgin.

Quaker Valley Edges Shady Side Academy for WPIAL Boys 2-A Gold
A pair of first-half goals by senior Owen Harkins were enough to crown Quaker Valley WPIAL boys 2A soccer champions in 2016.  The Quaker Valley Quakers captured the eighth WPIAL boys soccer championship in school history with a 2-1 victory over fifth-seeded Shady Side Academy at Highmark Stadium. Shady Side knocked off the top seed in class 2-A, South Park, in a 1-0 double overtime thriller, and kept QV from finding the back of the net for the first 24 minutes of play. The best opportunity for either team came when Quakers earned a penalty kick after a foul inside the box. However, Doran Kozel made a diving save on the attempt by Bando Grant to keep the match scoreless.

Sewickley Beats CWNC in Overtime for WPIAL 1-A Boys Crown
For the sixth time in program history, the Sewickley Academy Panthers took home the WPIAL Championship after tonight’s 1-0 overtime victory against the Trojans of Cardinal Wuerl North Catholic in the 1A Boy’s Soccer Championship Game. In a game that was very defensive, it saw just four total shot opportunities in the first half, three by the Trojans and one by the Panthers. Two of those three shots by the Trojans were on net. The second half saw more of the same, until around 15 minutes left when the Panthers pushed on the accelerator, however, they just couldn’t get a shot past the Trojans and the game would remain tied after regulation, 0-0.

A Golden Moon in WPIAL Girls 3-A Soccer
The Moon Tigers won their second WPIAL girls soccer championship Friday night with a hard-fought 1-0 over crosstown rival and section foe Montour. The Tigers beat the Spartans for the third time this season, Montour was undefeated in 2016 were it not for the Moon Tigers. It was a dramatically physical contest but never chippy at Highmark Stadium at Station Square, bodies were flying from the start and afterwards Emma Thomas. the second leading scorer on the season for the Tigers said she expected nothing less. "They are our rivals and this being WPIALs we had to play more intensely and they played more intensely as well, so I gotta give respect to them."

North Allegheny Wins WPIAL Boys 4-A Soccer Crown in OT
November 4, 2016
The North Allegheny Tigers won their first WPIAL championship since 1999 with a 2-1 overtime triumph over the Seneca Valley Raiders at Highmark Stadium on Thursday night. Senior Sean Atwater, who scored his first goal of the season in overtime to beat Pine-Richland in the semifinals on Saturday, again connected for the game-winning marker to sink the Raiders in an exciting title tilt. The championship is North Allegheny’s eighth in program history.
