Three WPIAL AA Wrestlers Win State Gold

The WPIAL came into Saturday’s action in AA with four wrestlers in the finals looking for gold. By the end of the afternoon, the WPIAL went three for four in Hershey.

Another postseason tournament starts this weekend for the New Castle boys basketball team and the Red Hurricanes. While New Castle has achieved a number of historical feats the past few seasons, the start of the PIAA playoffs means New Castle will take another shot at joining a most special group. But to become a member, New Castle will have to look just perfect. For the third year in a row, New Castle will take a perfect record into the PIAA tournament after winning a WPIAL title with an undefeated record.

The WPIAL could not have opened the tournament much better in AAA at Hershey on Thursday, with a whopping 31 of 42 wrestlers advancing in the winners bracket and another six wrestlers winning in the consolations to give the WPIAL 37 of 42 wrestlers still alive after day one. Wrestling in his home gymnasium, Solomon Chishko of Canon McMillan looked to become the 24th wrestler to win a 4th WPIAL individual title. To do so, Chishko would have to beat another defending WPIAL Champion, Josh Maruca of Franklin Regional. The top Class AA wrestlers around Southwestern Pennsylvania spent Friday and Saturday in Johnstown doing battle for the top five spots in the upcoming PIAA Class AA Individual Wrestling Championships. Coming into the AAA WPIAL individual tournament, 160 pounds stood as the deepest weight class in the tournament, with eight wrestlers having the ability to win on any given night. On Friday night the results proved this to be true, as three of the top four seeds were upset. The first came when top seed Dom Scalise of Latrobe lost to TeShan Campbell of Penn Hills 4-0. Campbell picked up 3 back points late in the third period while riding out Scalise to pick up the victory. The next seeded wrestler to do gown was number four seed Devin Austin, who lost a hard fought 7-4 match to Jonathan Avon of North Hills. Finally number two seed Brendan Burnham of Pine Richland gave up a late takedown to Waynesburg freshman Colin McCracken to drop a 4-3 decision.WPIAL Class AAA Wrestling Championships – Day One

The biggest surprise from day one of the AAA WPIAL Championships was not the action on the mats but the news off the mat. The number four seed at 113 pounds, Ethan McCoy of Latrobe, was scratched from the tournament. McCoy was dealing with health issues in the morning and was held out for precautionary reasons. Also held out of the tournament due to health issues was Ethan Smith, who came in as the number six seed at 145 pounds. Outside of the scratches, few upsets rang in on Thursday. The top four seeds in all fourteen weight classes advanced, with only one number five seed in Paul Dunn of Bethel Park falling short of the quarterfinals. There have been a lot of great milestones in the wrestling career of Kittanning senior Jason Nolf, who currently has a career record of 169-1 and is planning to attend Penn State University in the fall. Nolf added to his milestones when he was able to join a special group of wrestlers on Saturday, when he became the 23rd WPIAL wrestler to ever win 4 WPIAL Championships. Nolf earned his fourth title in dominating fashion at 145 pounds. He won by a pair of falls over George Rogers of Washington and Austin Mears of Mount Pleasant to put him into Saturday nights final against Beth-Center’s Tony Welsh. In the finals, Nolf jumped out to a quick 4-1 lead before turning Welsh and pinning him in 1:22.WPIAL Class AA Individual Wrestling Championships – Day One Recap
Burrell came into the AA individual WPIAL Championships with the most representatives in the tournament with a wrestler in all 14 weight classes and through the first day, the Buccaneers have not disappointed. Burrell advanced all 14 wrestlers into the second day with a leading 8 wrestlers advancing to the semi-finals. The WPIAL showcased why they are so deep in AAA on Friday night, with all three PIAA qualifiers (Franklin Regional, Latrobe, North Allegheny) wrestling in the semi-finals. With Franklin Regional and Latrobe advancing to Saturday’s final, the WPIAL had its first ever all District 7 final in the PIAA tournament. The matchup was against two familiar foes, with Franklin Regional and Latrobe already wrestling each other twice over the last two weeks. In the first meeting in the Section 1 Championships, Franklin Regional beat Latrobe 46-28. For a third straight year, the WPIAL Class AAA champion goes on a week later to win the PIAA Class AAA state crown. The gold rush continued for the Franklin Regional Panthers. A week after winning their first district team title, the Panthers once again knocked off the Latrobe Wildcats to win the schools first state crown. Also, after losing in the First round, Burrell won five matches to finish third in Class AA after sweeping through the consolation rounds. It was a memorable day for the WPIAL’s Class AAA representatives at the PIAA Wrestling Championships held at the GIANT Center on Friday. It will be an all-WPIAL final on Saturday afternoon in Hershey featuring Franklin Regional against Latrobe. This marks the third time in the past 17 days these two teams will battle with gold medals on the line. Franklin Regional beat Latrobe, 46-28, on January 22nd for the Section 1 title and then backed it up with a 42-19 pounding of the Wildcats last Saturday in the WPIAL championship match.
