2013 PIAA Individual Wrestling Championships Recap – Day Two

Day 1 of the PIAA tournament could not have went better for the AAA WPIAL wrestlers, with 38 of 42 wrestlers staying alive. The success continued into Day 2, with 31 of 42 wrestlers continuing their wrestling season and guaranteeing themselves a spot on the medal stand Saturday night.Scholastic Notebook – 03/08/2013

The PIAA tournament kicked off in Hershey on Thursday, which is the start of the bracket cutting down from 16 wrestlers to the top 8 medalists in each weight class. Thursday marked 4 wrestlers being eliminated at each weight class and the good news is the WPIAL did not get the memo.The WPIAL had a strong showing on Thursday, with 28 of its 42 wrestlers advancing into the quarterfinals while another 10 wrestlers stayed alive in the consolations. That means out of the 42 AAA WPIAL wrestlers, only four guys were eliminated (one wrestler each at 106, 138, 160, and 285).This Week on the MSA Sports Network – 03/04/2013

The focus switches from district playoffs and championships to state playoffs and championship during this first full week of March this week here on the MSA Sports Network. Canon-McMillan continued its unforgettable season Saturday evening at Norwin High School as the Big Macs earned the team point championship, captured three individual gold medals, and advanced a total of seven wrestlers to next weekend’s state championship tournament in Hershey. The Big Macs have already shown they’re the top dual meet squad in the state and now appear poised to back it up, as Canon-McMillan will be the prohibitive favorite to be crowned the top team once again at the state individual tournament.In all, 42 wrestlers punched their tickets to Chocolate Town at the 78th annual WPIAL Class AAA Individual Wrestling Championships. While the WPIAL was crowning district champions this weekend in Class AA, the top wrestlers in Class AAA were wrestling to earn their invitation to the 2013 WPIAL Class AAA Individual Wrestling Championships next weekend. The Class AA WPIAL Championships had a lot of variety to the weekend, with 12 total schools being represented at the top of the podium at Chartiers Valley. Burrell led the way with 3 Champions, including Senior Phil Marra at 145, Senior Dakota DesLauriers at 182, and Sophomore Alan Beattie at 285. 11 other schools brought home individual gold, including Burgettstown, Derry, South Side, South Park, Kittanning, Charleroi, Freedom, South Fayette, Jefferson-Morgan, Chartiers-Houston, and Avella.This Week on the MSA Sports Network – 02/19/2013

Four in a row on the district level, now Canon-McMillan has won back-to-back state championships. The Big Macs edged Central Dauphin Saturday afternoon to win the PIAA Team Wrestling Class AAA crown. Also in Hershey, Bethlehem Catholic won their third straight Class AA championship.Meanwhile, making their first ever state playoff appearance, Franklin Regional finished third when the Panthers won the Consolation Round championship.
