PIAA Wrestling: Class 3-A Day One Results
March 9, 2017
The WPIAL put together a strong showing on day one in AAA, with half of its wrestlers (28 of 56) advancing into the quarterfinals. Of the 28 wrestlers who dropped into the consolations, only 6 were eliminated from the tournament. Wrestlers from the WPIAL were able to pull a couple upsets, but also had champions from a week ago get upset as well. The wrestlers to pull the upsets were Dominic Means of Pittsburgh Central Catholic at 138, who beat South Central Champion Clayton Ulrey of Lower Dauphin 8-6. At 152, Brock Godzin of Belle Vernon defeated South East Champion Chase Stephens of Coatesville 6-4 in overtime. The third was Jake Slinger of Upper St. Clair at 220, where he beat North East Champion Evan Callahan of Freedom by fall in 3:31.
PIAA Wrestling: Class 2-A Day One Results
The WPIAL brought 34 wrestlers in to Hershey, with a mixed bag of results. 11 wrestlers remain in contention for a state championship after day one, with 12 wrestlers alive in the consolations, and 11 WPIAL wrestlers being eliminated. Leading the way is Gavin Teasdale of Jefferson Morgan, who is looking for his third state championship. He won by technical fall 27-11 in 5:30 over Nicholas Vonelli of Notre Dame GP to advance. Also moving on in the same weight was John Rocco Kazalas of Quaker Valley, who won 8-7 over Gage Bayless of Reynolds.This Week on the MSA Sports Network – 03/06/2017

The top AAA wrestlers in the WPIAL showcased themselves well over the weekend in Canon McMillan, and no one was a better example of that then Spencer Lee of Franklin Regional. Lee became the 27th wrestler to win four WPIAL Championships, pinning Noah Levett of Kiski Area in 1:16 to win his fourth title. In addition to the fall on Levett, Lee also pinned his other three opponents, all in the first period. In addition to Lee, Cam Coy of Penn Trafford wrestled a great tournament to become the 73rd wrestler to win three WPIAL Championships. Coy also collected three first period falls to get to the finals, where he then beat Canon McMillan’s Gerrit Nijenhuis 5-2 to win the title.
WPIAL Alum Q&A – Josh Shields

For many years, Western Pennsylvania has been a hotbed for high-school wrestling. In particular, the Franklin Regional Panthers produced a few historic seasons recently. Josh Shields was one of the key components of the Panthers success, and now he's achieved similar success on the mat at Arizona State. 2017 PIAA Class 2-A Southwest Regional Wrestling Results

The Southwest Regional Tournament in AA moved up one week, and to a different location, but the WPIAL produced similar results to a year ago. From the confines of Ed Frey Arena, Kovalchick Complex at Indiana University of Pennsylvania, the WPIAL was able to produce 34 state qualifiers, down only one from last season. While the number of wrestlers going to Hershey from the WPIAL remains similar, the amount of champions was not quite up to par. The WPIAL featured many dominant wrestlers a year ago, en route to producing 7 champions out of the Southwest Region. This year, only 2 were champions, and both won over fellow WPIAL foes.WPIAL Individual Wrestling Class 3-A Sectional Results
The field for the 2017 WPIAL Class AAA Individual Wrestling Championships is now set following the results from all four Triple-A sectionals on Saturday. A new format was introduced for AA Wrestling in the WPIAL, which saw wrestlers battling it out for Section titles on Friday, and a WPIAL Championship on Saturday. While a few wrinkles still need to be ironed out, the overall mood was a success in its opening year. On the mat, many wrestlers become first time WPIAL Champions, as only two became repeat winners. Most notably of those was Gavin Teasdale of Jefferson Morgan, who remained undefeated in his career after wining his third WPIAL Championship. In the finals, Teasdale defeated Burrell's Dillan Jeffrey by major decision, 20-8. Nazareth won the PIAA Class 3-A Team Wrestling championship, their first since 2006 while District 10 champion Reynolds won the Class 2-A crown for the first time since 2009 Saturday afternoon at the GIANT Center in Hershey. The only WPIAL team to medal was Class 3-A champion Kiski Area after the Cavaliers won four consolation round matches to finish in third place. It has been a decade of dominance for the Burrell High School wrestling team. Now it is a decade PLUS. Since 2007, the Bucs have now won a record eleven straight WPIAL Class AA Team Wrestling championships after knocking off the Freedom Bulldogs for a second consecutive season in the district finals on Saturday. Meanwhile, the top-seed Kiski Area Cavaliers remained undefeated as they won the 3-A championship for the third time in school history and the Cavs first title since 2003. Burrell Wins Record 11th Straight WPIAL AA Wrestling Crown

Every year begins the same way in AA WPIAL wrestling, with fans asking one question, who will end Burrell's reign? And for the 11th year in a row, the answer remains the same, no one. Burrell came in to Saturday with an intensity that was clearly unmatched, and they dominated from start to finish en route to their 13th overall WPIAL crown. It started with their semi-final win over Derry, where after losing the first match by fall, rattled off 11 straight wins to knock off the Trojans 44-18. They advanced to the finals, where they would meet Freedom for the second straight season. The Bulldogs were coming off a 38-30 win over South Fayette, avenging an earlier 40-28 loss from the South Side Duals.
Kiski Area Perfect in Winning WPIAL Wrestling 3-A Title
Kiski Area capped off an incredible season on the mat, as the Cavaliers remained undefeated in capturing the 2017 WPIAL Class AAA Championship at Penn Hills High School. The top-seeded Cavaliers (19-0) defeated Canon-McMillan 41-21 to claim the first team wrestling title since 2003. The Cavs and No. 2 seed Big Macs exchanged falls at the onset, as Kiski's Nick Delp and Canon-McMillan's Gerrit Nijenhuis provided pins in the 152-pound and 160-pound weight classes, respectively. Next, the Big Macs' took a brief lead, as 170 pounder Blaze Kansco notched a decision. The Cavs responded, though, as Kiski's Vinny Romano secured a decision to deadlock the score at 9-9.Scholastic Notebook – 02/03/2017

The spirit of 66 ended for one WPIAL girls team. But one boys team is close to getting into the same spirit. The subject is section winning streaks. The Quigley Catholic girls had what was the longest section winning streak in the WPIAL at 66, but it ended Thursday night after a 56-48 loss to Cornell. Turn to WPIAL boys basketball and look at Lincoln Park. The Leopards have a 64-game section winning streak. Lincoln Park has two section games remaining, and if the Leopards win both, they will finish the regular season with a 66-game streak. Here are the FINAL WPIAL team wrestling standings for the 2016-2017 season. The top three teams from each sub-section qualify for the Section Championship Tournament. The WPIAL will unveil the 2017 Team Wrestling Playoff brackets on Thursday, but first held the Team Sectionals on Wednesday. The top three teams from each sub-section qualified for the Section Championship Tournament. The top team in each sub-section faced the runner-up in the opposing sub-section with the two winners then doing battle for the section championship while the two third place finishers face off to determine the fifth qualifier from that section.
