2017 PIAA Team Wrestling Playoffs RESULTS

Nazareth won the PIAA Class 3-A Team Wrestling championship, their first since 2006 while District 10 champion Reynolds won the Class 2-A crown for the first time since 2009 Saturday afternoon at the GIANT Center in Hershey. The only WPIAL team to medal was Class 3-A champion Kiski Area after the Cavaliers won four consolation round matches to finish in third place. 2017 WPIAL TEAM WRESTLING Results

It has been a decade of dominance for the Burrell High School wrestling team. Now it is a decade PLUS. Since 2007, the Bucs have now won a record eleven straight WPIAL Class AA Team Wrestling championships after knocking off the Freedom Bulldogs for a second consecutive season in the district finals on Saturday. Meanwhile, the top-seed Kiski Area Cavaliers remained undefeated as they won the 3-A championship for the third time in school history and the Cavs first title since 2003. Burrell Wins Record 11th Straight WPIAL AA Wrestling Crown

Every year begins the same way in AA WPIAL wrestling, with fans asking one question, who will end Burrell's reign? And for the 11th year in a row, the answer remains the same, no one. Burrell came in to Saturday with an intensity that was clearly unmatched, and they dominated from start to finish en route to their 13th overall WPIAL crown. It started with their semi-final win over Derry, where after losing the first match by fall, rattled off 11 straight wins to knock off the Trojans 44-18. They advanced to the finals, where they would meet Freedom for the second straight season. The Bulldogs were coming off a 38-30 win over South Fayette, avenging an earlier 40-28 loss from the South Side Duals.

Kiski Area Perfect in Winning WPIAL Wrestling 3-A Title

Kiski Area capped off an incredible season on the mat, as the Cavaliers remained undefeated in capturing the 2017 WPIAL Class AAA Championship at Penn Hills High School. The top-seeded Cavaliers (19-0) defeated Canon-McMillan 41-21 to claim the first team wrestling title since 2003. The Cavs and No. 2 seed Big Macs exchanged falls at the onset, as Kiski's Nick Delp and Canon-McMillan's Gerrit Nijenhuis provided pins in the 152-pound and 160-pound weight classes, respectively. Next, the Big Macs' took a brief lead, as 170 pounder Blaze Kansco notched a decision. The Cavs responded, though, as Kiski's Vinny Romano secured a decision to deadlock the score at 9-9.

Scholastic Notebook – 02/03/2017

The spirit of 66 ended for one WPIAL girls team. But one boys team is close to getting into the same spirit. The subject is section winning streaks. The Quigley Catholic girls had what was the longest section winning streak in the WPIAL at 66, but it ended Thursday night after a 56-48 loss to Cornell. Turn to WPIAL boys basketball and look at Lincoln Park. The Leopards have a 64-game section winning streak. Lincoln Park has two section games remaining, and if the Leopards win both, they will finish the regular season with a 66-game streak. Lincoln Park plays Riverside and Ellwood City in its final two section games.

Here are the FINAL WPIAL team wrestling standings for the 2016-2017 season. The top three teams from each sub-section qualify for the Section Championship Tournament. The top team in each sub-section faced the runner-up in the opposing sub-section with the two winners then doing battle for the section championship while the two third place finishers face off to determine the fifth qualifier from that section that will move on to the 2-17 WPIAL Team Wrestling Playoffs. The WPIAL will unveil the 2017 Team Wrestling Playoff brackets on Thursday, but first held the Team Sectionals on Wednesday. The top three teams from each sub-section qualified for the Section Championship Tournament. The top team in each sub-section faced the runner-up in the opposing sub-section with the two winners then doing battle for the section championship while the two third place finishers face off to determine the fifth qualifier from that section. It was six years ago that Kyle DeGregorio went through a painful experience of being let go as Baldwin’s boys basketball coach. But DeGregorio eventually found new coaching life a little farther south down Route 51, and has given the Belle Vernon program a new heartbeat. Belle Vernon is 10-3 and tied with McGuffey and South Fayette for first place in WPIAL Class 4A Section 3. Two of those tied teams square off Friday when Belle Vernon plays host to South Fayette.

To qualify for the WPIAL Team Wrestling playoff field, you first have to qualify for the team sectionals. The top three teams from each sub-section qualify for the Section Championship Tournament. WPIAL Alum Q&A – Tristan Buxton

Although Tristan Buxton was a talented grappler at Trinity High School, he perhaps did not establish himself as one of the elite competitors in the district. Now wrestling at the college level at Waynesburg, Buxton has developed into one of the best on the mat. As a result, he's in the spotlight for this week's installment of the WPIAL Alum Q&A. Buxton was a three-time letterwinner for the Hillers, beginning as a sophomore in 2011-12. He competed in the 113-pound weight class in sectionals, but did not place. The following season, Buxton dropped to 106, and compiled an overall mark of 27-10. In the Class AAA Section 4 tournament, he finished third. That allowed him to advance to the Southwest Regional, in which he went 1-2.
